The Janssen and Newfoundland and Labrador Health Innovation Partnership (JANL-HIP) was established to carry out Real-World Evidence (RWE) projects to generate evidence about disease pathways, healthcare delivery, the effects of clinical interventions. Doing so will support and influence clinical decision-making in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). This case study describes the foundational elements necessary for a real-world evidence generation project in NL and may provide learning for the effective execution of real-world studies in other jurisdictions. It uses an ongoing project in psoriatic

Interval colorectal cancers (I-CRCs) arise during the interval time period between scheduled colonoscopies. Predicting which patients are at risk of I-CRCs remains an elusive undertaking, but evidence would suggest that most I-CRCs arise from lesions missed on index endoscopy. The procedural factors that lead to missed lesions are numerous and lack consensus in the literature. In Canada, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest incidence of CRCs. In this study our aim was to examine I-CRCs (3-60 months after last colonoscopy) in NL through a population-level analysis covering

BACKGROUND: First-generation cephalosporins and antistaphylococcal penicillins are typically the first choice for treating skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI), but are not effective for infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It is currently unclear what percentage of SSTIs is caused by community-associated MRSA in different regions in Canada.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of MRSA in children presenting to a pediatric emergency department with SSTI, and to determine which antibiotics were used to treat these infections.
METHODS: All visits to a pe

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with poor bone health, colorectal cancer, type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Two national health-related societies in Canada have made recommendations for vitamin D supplementation, yet little research has been reported on the vitamin D status of Canadians. Lifestyle changes, such as sunscreen use, spending less time outdoors and insufficient intake of vitamin D-containing foods as well as northern latitude, may be affecting human vitamin D status. A cross-sectional analysis of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25-(OH)D] was conducted in pregnant women, newborns (umb

Women on opioid agonist therapy often enter labour with limited information about neonatal withdrawal, newborn care, and hospital routines. Stigma and fear of child protection involvement can further limit communication. This study explored parents' information needs regarding opioid agonist therapy and newborn care. Seven virtual in-depth interviews were conducted between December 2020 and April 2021. Participants described inconsistent prenatal education on neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, hospitalization, and newborn care. Concerns about NICU admission, child protection involvement, dos

INTRODUCTION: Drug deaths are rising in Canada and are driven by polydrug toxicity (that is toxicity resulting from multiple drugs belonging to different drug classes). Addressing polydrug toxicity requires the establishment of regional drug profiles so that appropriate harm reduction policies can be implemented.
METHODS: Using toxicology data from individuals who died from acute drug toxicity, we established regional drug profiles for the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Medical examiners determined which drugs contributed to each acute death. Counts were described to establis

BACKGROUND: The incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma continues to increase worldwide and in Canada. It is unclear whether the increase in incidence and clinical characteristic trends of cutaneous malignant melanoma are similar in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to examine the incidence and trends of cutaneous malignant melanoma in Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador.
METHODS: Patients aged 18 years or older diagnosed with cutaneous malignant melanoma were identified from the Eastern Health Authority's Cancer Registry. The diagnosis was

Thirty-five deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, were trapped on Gannet Cluster 2 (GC-2), one of a group of islands numbered by convention in the Gannet Island Archipelago, and examined for ectoparasites. One species each of Acari (Ixodes uriae) and Siphonaptera (Orchopeas leucopus) were recovered. Samples of mice favored males to females (3.4∶1). Twenty-nine percent (10) of the mice were free of ectoparasites. Males were more heavily parasitized than females when both parasites were considered. No ticks were recovered from the female mice, while the males that were parasitized carried adult Ixo

Background/Objectives: The diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) and nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections is accomplished by three main diagnostics methods: smear microscopy, culture, and molecular testing. Diagnostic algorithms used by laboratories can significantly impact clinical and infection control management. Current Canadian Tuberculosis Standards recommend the use of nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) for smear-positive patients and smear-negative patients upon request. An alternative algorithm is to utilize NAAT in the Panel approach on all samples, p

May measurement month (MMM) is a global blood pressure (BP) screening campaign that aims to emphasize the importance of BP measurement and identify those who require intervention/follow-up for elevated BP. The objective of this regional analysis in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Canada, was to examine the proportion of individuals screened with elevated BP, including those with and without a history of hypertension (HTN). This cross-sectional study was completed in accordance with the global MMM protocol. All consenting adults ≥18 years old were eligible to take part. Data collection took pla

Despite the Canada Health Act's emphasis on "reasonable access" to care, many newcomer patients for whom English is a second language face communication barriers when seeking medical treatment in Canada. This barrier is especially prevalent in Canadian pharmacies, where interpretation services are often limited or non-existent. With the expanding scope of pharmacy practice across Canadian provinces, accurate translation of clinical concerns and medication instructions is crucial to ensure patients' health and safety.Interpretation services in medical settings are inconsistently implemented nat

BackgroundLow back pain (LBP) rarely requires routine imaging of the lumbar spine in the primary care setting, as serious spinal pathology is rare. Despite evidence-based clinical practice guidelines recommending delaying imaging in the absence of red flags, chiropractors commonly order imaging outside of these guidelines. The purpose of this study was to survey chiropractors to determine the level of knowledge, adherence to, and beliefs about, clinical practice guidelines related to the use of lumbar radiography for LBP in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Canada.MethodsA cross-sectional survey

The highly transmissible Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 caused many infections in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and the fraction of infections that were unreported varied as PCR testing capacity was exceeded and eligibility rules changed. Due to these inconsistencies in the testing rate, we developed a mechanistic model that was calibrated to serological data (Dec 2021-May 2022) to estimate underreporting and understand the impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions on transmission. Our model considers the epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 spread, natural and vaccine-derived immunity, and the boo

In 1993, a cross-sectional oral health survey of 739 randomly selected seven- to 12-year-old Canadian school children was conducted in Forteau (Labrador), Roddickton (northern Newfoundland), and Flower's Cove (northern Newfoundland) to determine the prevalence of dental caries and fluorosis. Children in grades two through six (n = 838) were selected to participate in the survey, which achieved a response rate of 88.2 per cent. Caries prevalence was estimated using modified World Health Organization (WHO) criteria (non-cavitated carious pits and fissures were coded separately from cavitated car

OBJECTIVES: In this paper, we provide an overview of best practices in FASD prevention, diagnostic, and interventions and supports. In Canada, people diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) represent a fraction people living with FASD. While social stigma may deter people from seeking an FASD diagnosis, other deterrents include the lack of screening and diagnostic referrals, cost of travelling to a clinic, and lack of clarity of how a diagnosis may improve supports and services. Preventing FASD and improving lifelong outcomes for people living with FASD requires a coordinated app

The provincial government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada implemented a contact tracing program as part of a containment strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic. A high proportion of cases were detected and contact traced, and our analysis provides insights into secondary case distributions and contact patterns in Newfoundland and Labrador. We used a heuristic approximation of secondary cases to account for ambiguities in who infected whom. These approximate values provide an empirical distribution of secondary cases. These distributions are compared against the stringency of public health

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization updated guidelines for travel measure implementation to recommend consideration of a region's specific epidemiological, health system and socioeconomic context. As such, travel measure implementation decisions require region-specific data, analysis and models to support risk assessment frameworks. From May 2020 to May 2021, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) implemented travel measures that required self-isolation and testing of individuals returning from out-of-province travel. We found that during the pandemic t
