Night eating syndrome in young adults: delineation from other eating disorders and clinical significance.

The Night Eating Syndrome (NES) is a recently described disordered eating style whose status in current diagnostic systems needs to be further clarified. The aim of this study was to increase knowledge about the clinical features of NES in a sample of 1514 young adults aged 18-26 years from the general population who participated in an anonymous Internet survey. We first examined characteristics of NES and tried to delineate it from healthy controls as well as from other eating disorders in terms of socio-demography, eating disorder pathology and general psychopathology. Second, we attempted t

Night eating syndrome in young adult women: prevalence and correlates.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined the prevalence and clinical significance of night eating syndrome (NES) in a community cohort of Black and White women. METHOD: We assessed 682 Black and 659 White women for NES, eating disorders, and psychiatric symptomatology. RESULTS: The prevalence was 1.6% (22 of 1,341; Blacks [n = 20]; Whites [n = 2]). Comparisons between identified Black women and the remaining Black participants revealed no significant differences in obesity, psychiatric comorbidity, or self-reported psychiatric distress. Comorbidity with eating disorders as outlined in the 4th e

Sleep Quality and Eating Disorder-Related Psychopathologies in Patients with Night Eating Syndrome and Binge Eating Disorders.

Night eating syndrome (NES) is an eating disorder (ED) characterized by nocturnal ingestion (NI), evening hyperphagia, morning anorexia, as well as mood and sleep disturbances. This study compared subjective and objective sleep quality and ED-related psychopathologies in patients seeking treatment for ED. Method: The sample was composed of 170 women, aged 18-68, who were referred for an ED assessment from 2011 to 2020. The participants were divided into three subgroups: NES-NI only (n = 30), NES+ binge eating (BE) (including binge eating disorders or bulimia nervosa (n = 52), and BE-only (n =

Do chronotype differences and night eating syndrome affect dental health?

OBJECTIVE: Our aim in this study was to examine the effect of chronotype differences and night eating syndrome on dental health parameters such as the decay-missing-filled teeth (DMFT) index, the severity of the periodontal disease and the number of endodontically treated teeth in patients admitted to the dental clinic. METHODS: The participants, 210 patients, filled out a package of psychological tools, including the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), the Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ) and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Afterwards, the DMFT index scores, the severity of the p

Personality traits and night eating syndrome in women with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

PURPOSE: Previous research suggests that eating disorders may be associated with certain personality profiles; however, there is limited research investigating associations with night eating syndrome (NES). This research suggests harm avoidance personality trait is higher in NES individuals than in the general population, however, evidence of associations with other personality traits is inconsistent. To understand which personality traits are associated with NES symptoms, the current study aimed to improve understanding of the relationship between NES symptoms and a range of personality trait

Daily and nightly anxiety among patients affected by night eating syndrome and binge eating disorder.

We tested if there were any differences about nocturnal and diurnal anxiety between patients either affected by Binge Eating Disorder (BED) or Night eating Syndrome (NES). Fifty four patients affected by BED, 13 by NES and 16 by both BED and NES were tested using the Self Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and the Sleep Disturbance Questionnaire (SDQ). Their nocturnal eating behavior was ascertained through the Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ). Patients affected by both BED and NES scored significantly higher on SAS than other patients. Among NES patients we found a correlation between a SDQ subscale

Clinical and genetic associations for night eating syndrome in a patient biobank.

OBJECTIVE: Night eating syndrome (NES) is an eating disorder characterized by evening hyperphagia. Despite having a prevalence comparable to some other eating disorders, NES remains sparsely investigated and poorly characterized. The present study examined the phenotypic and genetic associations for NES in the clinical Mass General Brigham Biobank. METHOD: Cases of NES were identified through relevant billing codes for eating disorders (F50.89/F50.9) and subsequent chart review; patients likely without NES were set as controls. Other diagnoses were determined from billing codes and collapsed

Prevalence and clinical significance of night eating syndrome in university students.

PURPOSE: Most studies of night eating syndrome (NES) fail to control for binge eating, despite moderate overlap between the two conditions. Establishing the independent clinical significance of NES is imperative for it to be considered worthy of clinical attention. We compared students with and without NES on eating disorder symptomatology, quality of life, and mental health, while exploring the role of binge eating in associations. METHODS: Students (N = 1,636) ages 18-26 years (M = 20.9) recruited from 10 U.S. universities completed an online survey including the Night Eating Questionnaire

Development of criteria for a diagnosis: lessons from the night eating syndrome.

Criteria for inclusion of diagnoses of Axis I disorders in the forthcoming Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V) of the American Psychiatric Association are being considered. The 5 criteria that were proposed by Blashfield et al as necessary for inclusion in DSM-IV are reviewed and are met by the night eating syndrome (NES). Seventy-seven publications in refereed journals in the last decade indicate growing recognition of NES. Two core diagnostic criteria have been established: evening hyperphagia (consumption of at least 25% of daily food intake after the evening meal) and/or the presence

Emotional Eating and Binge Eating Disorders and Night Eating Syndrome in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome-A Vicious Circle of Disease: A Systematic Review.

Obesity is an established risk factor for the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), especially phenotype A. PCOS is an important cause of fertility disorders in a large group of women of reproductive age. For many years, effective methods of treating hormonal disorders associated with PCOS have been sought in order to restore ovulation with regular menstrual cycles. Numerous studies support obesity treatment as an effective therapeutic method for many women. A seemingly simple method of treatment may prove to be particularly difficult in this group of women. The reason for this may

Using the Neuroscience of Obesity, Eating Behavior, and Sleep to Inform the Neural Mechanisms of Night Eating Syndrome.

The development and maintenance of night eating syndrome (NES) is likely influenced by physiological, psychological, and social factors. Within the physiological domain, neural mechanisms (e.g., neurotransmitters and specific brain region functioning) remain understudied in contrast to other eating disorders and obesity. The serotonin system has been hypothesized to contribute to NES based on one single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) study and supportive pharmacologic treatment outcome findings, but additional neural models are plausible. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMR

Associations Between Interpersonal Problems, Negative Affect, and Symptoms of Night Eating Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Research on social support, attachment insecurity, and negative affect in night eating syndrome (NES) is sparse, although these factors have been proposed as key components of etiological models in other eating disorders. This study investigated whether individuals with night eating (NE) symptoms reported lower social support, greater attachment insecurity, and increased negative affect compared to those without, and examined if negative affect mediated the relationship between interpersonal problems (lack of social support, attachment insecurity) and NE symptoms. METHOD: A represe

High self-reported rates of neglect and emotional abuse, by persons with binge eating disorder and night eating syndrome.

This study compared rates of self-reported childhood maltreatment in three groups diagnosed using semi-structured interviews: binge eating disorder (BED; n=176), night eating syndrome (NES, n=57), and overweight/obese comparison (OC, n=38). We used the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) to assess childhood maltreatment and the Beck Depression Inventory-II to assess depression levels. Reports of maltreatment were common in patients with BED (82%), NES (79%), and OC (71%). The BED group reported significantly more forms of maltreatment above clinical cut-points (2.4) than the OC (1.4) group bu
