Comorbid neuropsychiatric conditions, including major depressive disorder, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and psychosis, are reported among children with rapid-onset obesity with hypothalamic dysfunction, hypoventilation, and autonomic dysregulation (ROHHAD). The association of ROHHAD with parasomnias is poorly understood. We describe the presentation and management of night terrors superimposed on delirium in a child with presumed ROHHAD. The child developed an acute altered mental status and increased anxiety during a hospitalization for sepsis and pulmonary emboli, three years after initial rap

BACKGROUND: Arousal parasomnias (night terrors, sleepwalking, and confusional arousals) have seldom been investigated in the adult general population. Clinical studies of parasomnias, however, show that these disorders may be indicators of underlying mental disorders and may have serious consequences.
METHOD: A representative sample of the United Kingdom population (N = 4972) was interviewed by telephone with the Sleep-EVAL system.
RESULTS: Night terrors were reported by 2.2% (95% CI = 1.8% to 2.6%) of the sample, sleepwalking by 2.0% (1.6% to 2.4%), and confusional arousals by 4.2% (3.6% to

Children and adolescents with a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) are at high-risk for developing sleep problems (SPs) triggering daytime behavioral co-morbidities such as inattention, hyperactivity, and cognitive and emotional impairments. However, symptoms of sleep deprivation are solely associated with typical daytime diagnosis, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and treated with psychotropic medications. To understand how and why SPs are missed, we conducted qualitative interviews (QIs) with six parents and seven health care professionals (HCPs), and performed com

In the vast majority of patients with parasomnias, the evaluation can be accomplished in the office setting, based on information from the patients themselves and family members or other observers of the nocturnal events. Parasomnias are episodic sleep disorders that include sleepwalking, night terrors, and nightmares. All three conditions are more prevalent in childhood, when developmental factors appear to be responsible for their occurrence; in the much less frequent cases of a delayed onset or persistence in adulthood, psychopathologic states are often primary in their cause. Based on a nu

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Environmental factors such as serious trauma or abuse and related stress can lead to nightmares or night terrors. Being bullied can be very distressing for children, and victims display long-term social, psychological, and health consequences. Unknown is whether being bullied by peers may increase the risk for experiencing parasomnias such as nightmares, night terrors, or sleepwalking.
METHODS: A total of 6796 children of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) birth cohort were interviewed at elementary school age (8 and 10 years) about bullyin

Sleepwalking is one of the parasomnias, a group of disorders that also includes night terrors, nocturnal enuresis and nightmares. This disorder of arousal is much more common in children than in adults, and it is commonly associated with other parasomnias. Sleepwalking typically occurs during the first three hours of sleep, when sleep stages 3 and 4 (non-rapid-eye-movement sleep) are most prevalent. The episodes usually last 30 seconds to 30 minutes. The differential diagnosis of sleepwalking includes partial complex seizures occurring during sleep, rapid-eye-movement behavior disorder, night

We report a case of a man in his 40s presenting with idiopathic adult-onset sleep terrors manifesting as nocturnal violent behaviour, including a concerning episode of attempted strangulation of his bed partner. Polysomnography documented an event during N3 sleep (slow-wave, deep non-rapid eye movement) with autonomic hyperactivation and complex motor behaviour. A detailed psychiatric evaluation did not reveal any diagnosable anxiety, mood or other psychiatric disorder, and there was no history of substance use, recent psychosocial stressors or sleep deprivation. Notably, there were no precipi

The clinical and therapeutic aspects of nocturnal panic attacks (NPAs) remain poorly understood. Some authors present NPAs as a more severe and less cognitive form of panic disorder (PD), whereas others treat it as a different manifestation of conventional panic attack. Overall, few articles address NPA relative to the large amount of literature regarding PD. Important aspects regarding the management of NPAs, such as the appropriate pharmacological and psychological treatment, rely on relatively few studies. This review provides an update and review of the most relevant articles regarding con

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are commonly reported in the psychosis prodrome, but rarely explored in relation to psychotic experiences.
AIMS: To investigate the relationship between specific parasomnias (nightmares, night terrors and sleepwalking) in childhood and later adolescent psychotic experiences.
METHOD: The sample comprised 4720 individuals from a UK birth cohort. Mothers reported on children's experience of regular nightmares at several time points between 2 and 9 years. Experience of nightmares, night terrors and sleepwalking was assessed using a semi-structured interview at age

Disorders of arousal (somnambulism and night terrors) were significantly more common among children with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (n = 57) than among children with seizure disorders (n = 58) or learning disabilities (n = 53). Neurohumoral disturbances may account for the differences.

A 15-year-old boy presented for evaluation of snoring and sleep-disordered breathing. The parents noted that the patient snored every night and that he had episodes when he stopped breathing, ending with gasping for air. He had no history of sleep walking, night terrors, tongue biting, or seizures. The patient had two healthy siblings, but he had a history of intellectual disability and developmental delay. The patient had a history of adenotonsillectomy.

A 7-year-old girl who suffered from severe sleep terror disorder was unsuccessfully treated with imipramine, hydroxyzine, and thioridazine. Trazodone at night provided a remarkable relief of the symptoms of her sleep terror disorder. Trazodone might be another alternative in the treatment of this rare disorder.

Shift work is increasingly common in industrialized countries but is associated with numerous health problems, especially sleep disorders. This study compared the frequency of NREM (confusional arousal, sleep terrors, sleepwalking, sleep-related eating disorder), REM parasomnias (REM sleep behavior disorder, nightmare disorder), and isolated symptoms/normal variants (sleeptalking) between shift workers and daytime workers. A total of 1473 participants in 3 different professional groups and working different shift schedules (daytime, night, or rotating shifts) were included. Participants comple

BACKGROUND: Sleep terrors are common, frightening, but fortunately benign events. Familiarity with this condition is important so that an accurate diagnosis can be made.
OBJECTIVE: To familiarize physicians with the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management of children with sleep terrors.
METHODS: A PubMed search was completed in Clinical Queries using the key terms "sleep terrors" OR "night terrors". The search strategy included meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, clinical trials, observational studies, and reviews. Only papers published in the English literature were incl

Twenty-seven of eighty-eight (30.7%) Parkinsonian patients on chronic levodopa or levodopa/carbidopa therapy developed drug related dream phenomena. The patients reported three separate types of new dreams which we have classified as vivid dreams, night terrors and nightmares. These dreams are correlated to the duration of levodopa therapy although the mechanism of their production is unclear.

UNLABELLED: Little is known about sleep disorders in children and adolescents that might affect physical and emotional well-being. Depending on age and size of the cohort group, and differences in questionnaires, prevalence varies between 1-43% in international studies. We examined the prevalence of symptoms characteristic of sleep disorders in school aged children with a questionnaire which allows indication of symptoms by the children themselves.
METHODS: An anonymous questionnaire, based on the German Dresden questionnaire, with 22 questions concerning the main symptoms of obstructive slee

Epidemiological observations suggest that exposures in youth may trigger narcolepsy in genetically predisposed individuals. In this population-based case-control study, we sought to identify all prevalent cases of narcolepsy with cataplexy aged 18-50 years as of 1 July 2001, in King County, Washington. The 45 eligible cases who were DQB1*0602-positive were compared with 95 controls with this allele, identified through random-digit dialing and buccal smears. Cases and controls were interviewed in person about physician-diagnosed infectious and non-infectious illnesses, immunizations, head traum
