Evaluation and management of patients with nipple discharge (ND) aims to identify carcinoma when present, and in benign cases, stop the discharge when bothersome. We reviewed our recent experience with ND to develop a simple and effective algorithm to manage these patients. Records of all patients with ND evaluated from December 1996 through June 1999 were reviewed. Patients were liberally offered duct excision for a clinical suspicion of malignancy (persistent clear or bloody fluid) or to stop bothersome discharge. Patients with breast imaging abnormalities (mammography or ultrasound) related

Although milky nipple discharge appears frequently in infants, bloody nipple discharge is a very rare finding. We experienced a 4-month-old, breast-fed infant who showed bilateral bloody nipple discharge with no signs of infection, engorgement, or hypertrophy. The infant's hormonal examination and coagulation tests were normal, and an ultrasound examination revealed mammary duct ectasia. The symptoms resolved spontaneously within 6 weeks without any specific treatment, except that we advised the mother to refrain from taking herbal medicine. Since no such case has been previously reported in K

OBJECTIVES: To investigate diagnostic value of imaging procedures and management strategies of the patients with nipple discharge (ND) to establish management recommendations.
METHODS: Bibliographical search in French and English languages by consultation of PubMed, Cochrane and Embase databases.
RESULTS: Although, all ND require an systematic evaluation guided by clinical data, bloody ND could be a predictor of breast cancer risk among different colors of discharge particularly in patients of more than 50 years (LE2). The mammography and breast ultrasography are the imaging procedures to re

INTRODUCTION: Isolated single-duct nipple discharge is worrying and poses a surgical dilemma. Factors predicting malignancy are controversial.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of 92 consecutive microdochectomies for single-duct nipple discharge in a tertiary referral centre over 8 years.
RESULTS: The commonest causes were ductal papilloma (52%) and fibrocystic diseases of the breast (21%). Five (5%) patients had breast carcinoma, of whom only 1 had an invasive component. The median age of these patients was 43 years (range 26 to 72 years) which was similar to median age of the who

A common presenting symptom for female patients is nipple discharge. Therefore having a background on how to manage is necessary for appropriately identifying and diagnosing the underlying etiology. The two most utilized imaging studies are diagnostic mammography and ultrasound. It can be difficult to identify a source/cause with mammography due to decreased sensitivity with also variable results seen with ultrasound. Advanced imaging such as MRI is becoming increasingly utilized limiting the need for ductography for diagnosis. In this case report, we discuss a rare case presentation of sponta

BACKGROUND: Despite the low likelihood of malignancy, it is recommended that patients who have pathologic nipple discharge (PND) undergo duct excision. Intraductal papilloma is well-known most frequent cause of PND. Our goal is to determine whether the ductoscopic retrieval of a solitary papilloma is feasible and/or therapeutic for patients with PND. The accompanying video demonstrates this interventional ductoscopic approach.
METHODS: Consented patients who had been diagnosed with PND were recruited to have ductoscopic exploration. Patients with palpable masses and suspicion of malignancy on

BACKGROUND: This study was a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent minor or major duct surgery for pathological nipple discharge. The results of clinical examination, mammography, ultrasonography and cytodiagnosis of the nipple discharge were studied in order to predict those patients at risk of underlying or occult malignancy.
METHODS: Between January 2004 and December 2006, 55 female patients aged between 24 and 82 years old underwent major or minor duct excision, 49 of which were for pathological nipple discharge. Results of several preoperative investigations were compared with

In a retrospective study the authors analyzed 100 cases of women with serous, serosanguineous, and sanguineous nipple discharges, without palpable and radiologically visible tumors, that were submitted to resection of main galactophorous ducts and biopsy of underlying breast parenchyma. The sensibility of the cytologic examination of nipple discharges for carcinomas was 16.6%. The histopathology showed incidence of 61% of mammary dysplasia, 33% of intraductal papillomas single or multiple and 6% of carcinomas. The early diagnosis of carcinoma gave good results after radical surgical treatment.

Gynecomastia and bloody nipple discharge are very rare in childhood. In this report, a case of infantile gynecomastia together with bloody nipple discharge is presented. A hemorrhagic discharge was expressible from the mammary gland. Endocrinologic findings were within the normal limits. Because of persisting bleeding, a subcutaneous mastectomy was performed. The specimen was reported as gynecomastia. This boy is the first reported prepubertal gynecomastia with bloody nipple discharge in the medical literature.

BACKGROUND: Nipple-sparing mastectomies (NSMs) preserve the intact nipple, including nipple duct orifices. Retained orifices might remain patent and communicate with the underlying reconstruction. We report the incidence and outcomes of nipple discharge after NSM in pregnant and nonpregnant women.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of all NSMs at our institution from June 2007 to June 2018 was performed. Subsequent pregnancies and nipple discharge were documented. Patient demographic, operative, histopathology, and cancer treatment data were collected. Descriptive analysis was perform

Nipple discharge is a frequent reason for women to consult their physician, led by the fear of cancer. Fortunately, almost 90 % of cases have a benign aetiology. The main challenge is to rule out any malignant pathology by collecting a detailed history and clinical exam in order to define a targeted imaging. The aim of this review is to facilitate the management of nipple discharge. The most common aetiologies of nipple discharge are described, along with a systematic clinical approach to exclude any underlying malignancy and minimize invasive examinations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess management strategies for patients with nipple discharge (ND).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The records of 13,443 women with breast-related complaints who were examined by the same surgeon between 1 January 1960 and 31 December 2000 were retrospectively assessed. Patients with ND were grouped according to whether they had had a spontaneous or provoked discharge. The parameters investigated in each group were age, physical findings, number of pregnancies, duration of lactation, duration of discharge, colour of discharge, and histopathological f

After mastodynia, nipple discharge is the second most frequent condition that brings women to the attention of breast clinics. Seven types of nipple discharge exist: milky, multicolored, purulent, clear-watery, serous, pink or serosanguineous, brown or reddish-brown. From January 1982 to January 2003 we observed 2818 patients with nipple discharge (range: 16-83 years). Amongst these, 805 patients with nipple discharge were submitted to cytological examination of the secretions. One hundred and seventy-six had bilateral discharge, and 629 unilateral discharge. All patients with positive C3, C4

Nipple discharge is a complex diagnostic challenge for the clinician. A variety of diseases (such as intraductal papillomas, mammary duct ectasia, breast cancer, pituitary adenomas, breast abscesses/infections, etc.) can manifest as nipple discharge. The importance of nipple discharge for both the patient and the physician is the possible association of this condition with an underlying carcinoma. With heightened public awareness of breast cancer, an increasing number of women are asking their health care providers about nipple discharge. A detailed clinical evaluation is invaluable to determi

Male nipple discharge is uncommon and highly associated with malignancy. However, it can also be due to benign processes. In addition to physical examination, all patients should undergo a radiological examination with mammography and/or ultrasound. Furthermore, we propose the use of contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) in cases of suspicious nipple discharge due to the high negative predictive value of this technique, potentially reducing the number of unnecessary biopsies. The aim of this article is to review the imaging findings of the most common causes of male nipple discharge, both benign

BACKGROUND: Most breast cancers originate in the ductal epithelium with normal cells progressing to atypia and finally to carcinoma. Ductoscopy enables one to visualize and sample the ductal epithelium and therefore identify early changes cytologically. This report describes our experience with mammary ductoscopy as a tool for evaluation of nipple discharge at Beth Israel Medical Center.
METHODS: A prospective review of all patients who have undergone ductoscopy for evaluation of persistent nipple discharge was performed. The Acueity ductoscopy system with .9-mm scope and a video monitor with

OBJECTIVE: To determine the cytomorphologic spectrum of nipple discharge in florid gynecomastia.
STUDY DESIGN: During a 22-year period (July 1979-June 2001), nipple discharge from nine males with breast lesions were examined. Smears from four of these cases with histologically documented gynecomastia were reviewed along with the tissue sections.
RESULTS: In the three patients with florid gynecomastia the smears were cellular, with numerous benign ductal cells and papillary fragments along with foam cells and inflammatory cells. Epithelial atypia was mild in two cases and moderate in one. One

In a review of 249 office patients who complained of nipple discharge, breast nodularity and duct ectasia was the cause in three quarters. The clinical diagnosis was made by observing that more than one duct was involved and by the color of the discharge. On average, the patients were 10 years younger than those with cysts and 20 years younger than those with carcinoma. In half, the discharge could persist or recur for months or years. Nipple discharge was not commonly associated with carcinoma, and when it was, the carcinoma was almost always palpable. Nipple discharge, including bloody disch
