Pesticides to protect crops from pests are subject to rigorous risk assessment before registration in Japan. However, further information needs to be collected regarding the assessment of impacts on the natural environment. In particular, nitrifying bacteria play a role in converting ammonium salts to nitrates in soil. However, there is limited research covering the effects of insecticides on nitrification, despite several fungicides and herbicides have an inhibitory effect on nitrifying bacteria. Therefore, we investigated the effect of pesticides on the nitrification when applied to soil. Th

Cokes wastewater is one of the most toxic industrial effluents since it contains high concentrations of toxic compounds such as phenols, cyanides and thiocyanate. Although activated sludge process has been adapted to treat this wastewater, nitrification process has been occasionally upset by serious inhibitory effects of toxic compounds. In this study, therefore, we examined inhibitory effects of ammonia, thiocyanate, free cyanide, ferric cyanide, phenol and p-cresol on nitrification in an activated sludge system, and then correlated their threshold concentrations with the full-scale pre-denit

Soil fertilization with urea at rates of 0.2 and 0.5 mg N/g soil was toxic for total counts of bacteria and fungi except with cellulolytic fungi where growth was promoted by addition of urea after 90-d incubation. Also, the population numbers of both bacteria and fungi were significantly decreased when soil was amended with CaCl2 and K2SO4 applied at two levels (50 and 100 mumol/g soil). Some alleviation of the toxic effect of either urea or the inorganic salts was observed when they were applied in combination. Fungal species composition was found to be affected in the treated soil. The most

Nitrification drives nitrogen loss in agricultural systems, resulting in leached nitrate and increased emissions of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide, thereby reducing nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) provides a promising nature-based solution to low-NUE by suppressing nitrifying microorganisms via plant-exuded bioactive metabolites. Although BNI is well documented in several major cereal grasses, evidence of BNI in barley (Hordeum vulgare) is lacking. This study demonstrates barley BNI activity through suppression of rhizosphere ammonia-oxidizer abundanc

Sewage sludge management poses challenges due to its environmental impact, varying composition, and stringent regulatory requirements. In this scenario, hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising technology for producing biofuel and extracting phosphorus from sewage sludge. However, the toxic nature of the resulting process water (HTL-PW) raises concerns about integrating HTL into conventional wastewater treatment processes. This study investigated the inhibitory effects of HTL-PW on the activity of the main microbial functions in conventional activated sludge. Upon recirculation of the HT

UNLABELLED: Currently, rice straw return in place of burning is becoming more intensive in China than observed previously. However, little is known on the effect of returned rice straw on mercury (Hg) methylation and microbial activity in contaminated paddy fields. Here, we conduct a microcosm experiment to evaluate the effect of rice straw amendment on the Hg methylation and potential nitrification in two paddy soils with distinct Hg levels. Our results show that amended rice straw enhanced Hg methylation for relatively high Hg content soil, but not for low Hg soil, spiking the same additiona

In this study, the inhibitory effect of TCE on nitrification process was investigated with an enriched nitrifier culture. TCE was found to be a competitive inhibitor of ammonia oxidation and the inhibition constant (K(I)) was determined as 666-802 microg/l. The TCE affinity for the AMO enzyme was significantly higher than ammonium. The effect of TCE on ammonium utilization was evaluated with linearized plots of Monod equation (e.g., Lineweaver-Burk, Hanes-Woolf and Eadie-Hofstee plots) and non-linear least square regression (NLSR). No significant differences were found among these data evaluat

Nitrification in drinking water biofilters is mediated by a complex guild of ammonia oxidizers, yet the mechanisms facilitating the coexistence of these functionally redundant nitrifier guild members are not well understood. Using lab-scale columns packed with material from a full-scale groundwater-fed rapid sand filter (RSF), we investigated the responses of co-occurring complete ammonia-oxidizing (comammox) Nitrospira, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and archaea (AOA) to operational disturbances over 30 days. Overall, robust nitrification was maintained, with ammonium removal scaling propo

Excessive sludge production and unstable suppression of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) are key obstacles to sustainable mainstream partial nitrification (PN) in conventional activated sludge systems. This study demonstrates how a mainstream PN reactor equipped with encapsulated biofillers, operated under carbon-nitrogen decoupling, can achieve stable nitritation with minimal sludge production for low C/N domestic wastewater. Hydrolysis-acidification and denitrification (HA-DN) was used as a front-end carbon management module, redirecting readily biodegradable organics to denitrification, rem

Reactive nitrogen (Nr) losses from fertilized agricultural soils remain one of the dominant drivers of groundwater nitrate contamination and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, yet mitigation strategies are largely designed around input optimization rather than control of in-soil nitrogen transformations. Drip fertigation and nitrification inhibitors (NIs) have independently shown potential to improve nitrogen efficiency, however their integrated effects remain fragmented across irrigation and inhibitor-focused literature. Consequently, an integrated mechanistic framework explaining how drip irriga

Nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from agricultural soils are a major environmental concern, largely driven by microbial nitrogen (N) transformations following fertilizer application. Nitrification inhibitors such as 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) offer a promising strategy to mitigate these emissions, though their effectiveness is highly context-dependent. We conducted a laboratory microcosm experiment using four Cypriot soils spanning acidic to near-neutral pH to compare N₂O emissions, inorganic N dynamics, and N-cycling microbial communities under three treatments: (i) untreated soil (co

This study investigated the effect of high DO concentrations on PN. The experimental setup involved operating at high DO concentrations (1.5-2.5 mg/L) and environmental temperatures (15-20 °C) over a period of 180 days. Through a sludge enrichment process, the kinetic parameters of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) were determined. Surprisingly, contrary to conventional reports, it was observed that NOB exhibited a stronger affinity for DO compared to AOB. As a result, high DO concentrations were necessary to provide favorable conditions for the growth of AO

Intermittent ultrasound with an intensity of 0.2 W/ml was applied during simultaneous nitrification/iron-based autotrophic denitrification to evaluate its impacts on total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency and microbial characteristics during low carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N) wastewater treatment. At an optimal dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of 1.2 mg/L, the TN removal rate was 91 ± 4%, and the TN concentration in the effluent decreased by 31% owing to the ultrasound treatment. In addition, the number of iron-compounds that formed in the sludge and wastewater increased by 55% and 37%, respec

A hypothermia aerobic denitrifying bacterium, Pseudomonas taiwanensis strain J488, can effectively remove multiple nitrogen sources from wastewater at 15 °C. The ammonium, nitrate and nitrite removal efficiencies were 100 %, 92.61 % and 92.49 %, respectively. Strain J488 could survive with hydroxylamine as sole nitrogen source and its removal efficiency was 97.71 %. The removal efficiency of ammonium was 100 % even in the presence of the classical inhibitors of nitrification allylthiourea and diethyldithiocarbamate. These findings fundamentally changed the picture that the ammonia monooxygenas

The coexistence of antibiotics and heavy metals in soil has attracted increasing attention due to their negative effects on microorganisms. However, how antibiotics and heavy metals affect functional microorganisms related to nitrogen cycle remains unclear. The goals of this work were to explore the individual and combined effects of sulfamethazine (SMT) and cadmium (Cd), selected as target pollutants in soil, on potential nitrification rates (PNR) and ammonia oxidizers (ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB)) structure and diversity by 56-day cultivation experime

Recycling nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) from human urine can potentially offset more than 13% of global agricultural fertilizer demand. Biological nitrification is a promising method for converting volatile ammonia in high-strength human urine into stable ammonium nitrate (a typical fertilizer), but it is usually terminated in the intermediate production of nitrite due to the inhibition of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria by free nitrous acid (FNA). This study aimed to develop a stable nitrification process in a unique two-stage bioreactor by removing critical barriers associated w

Rare earth tailings soil retains high residual NH4+-N after in-situ leaching with ammonium sulfate, creating coupled risks of nitrogen loss and poor revegetation. The substrate and microbial pathways that reopen ammonia oxidation and mediate nitrification restart in this ammonium rich rare earth tailings soil remain unclear. To address this gap, a microcosm incubation over time compared an unamended soil, MgO, and manure, integrating nitrogen transformations, net mineralization, enzymes, qPCR, and shotgun metagenomics. Under OM, extractable NH4+-N declined by 88.3 % from its initial value, whi

Microbial CO2 fixation in alpine grassland soils is highly sensitive to warming and drought. Nitrogen inputs from grazing may stimulate autotrophic nitrifiers, including ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). These nitrifiers assimilate carbon through CO2 fixation, but how their activity is associated with microbial CO2 fixation under warming and drought remains unclear. Here, we investigated microbial CO2 fixation and nitrification under altered temperature and moisture using urea-amended soil microcosms with 13CO2 labeling, DN

Nitrification in agricultural soils drives significant nitrogen fertiliser losses and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, particularly in intensively fertilised rice systems. Biological nitrification inhibition (BNI), mediated by plant-derived compounds, offers a promising nature-based strategy to mitigate these losses, but the factors controlling BNI potential remain poorly understood. In this study, BNI mechanisms across five rice genotypes were investigated by combining plant physiology, soil nitrification dynamics and exudate metabolomics. Nitrifier suppression was strongest in the rhizosphere

Nitrification was measured within a sand and gravel aquifer on Cape Cod, MA, using a series of single-well injection tests. The aquifer contained a wastewater-derived contaminant plume, the core of which was anoxic and contained ammonium. The study was conducted near the downgradient end of the ammonium zone, which was characterized by inversely trending vertical gradients of oxygen (270 to 0 microM) and ammonium (19 to 625 microM) and appeared to be a potentially active zone for nitrification. The tests were conducted by injecting a tracer solution (ambient ground water + added constituents)
