Nitrogen fixation efficiency enhancement using plasma jet: Impact of grounded electrode.

Energy cost reduction for nitrogen fixation (NF) using non-thermal plasma remains a global challenge. Researchers are exploring to reach the theoretical energy cost limit of 0.2 MJ.mol-1 for NF. A fixed grounded electrode (FGE) plasma jet has designed, studied NOx production efficiency and energy cost, and compared the results with the traditional floating water ground electrode (FWGE) configuration. The plasma was characterized by the optical emission spectroscopic (OES) technique. The experimental setup was optimized for gas composition and flow rate. The efficient gas composition ratio was

Facile Synthesis of Primary Amines via Nitrogen Fixation in Charged Microdroplets.

Primary amines are one of the most versatile synthetic intermediates, but current methods rely on protecting groups in multistep reactions or corrosive reducing agents. Herein, we report an innovative synthetic method for primary amines based on accelerated microdroplet chemistry. The electrospray process allows in-situ ammonia generation from atmospheric nitrogen, reacting with alcohols of various properties (aliphatic and aromatic) to produce the corresponding amine. The alcohol to amine conversion rate improves (> 10×) when hydrazine is introduced as an ammonia source. Electronic and steric

Cold seep nitrogen fixation and its potential relationship with sulfur cycling.

UNLABELLED: Dinitrogen (N2) fixation is a crucial source of bioavailable nitrogen in carbon-dominated cold seep systems. Previous studies have shown that diazotrophy is not necessarily dependent on sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane for energy, and diverse catabolism can fuel the high-energy-demanding process in sediments. However, it remains unclear whether diazotroph can obtain energy by sulfur oxidation in sulfur-rich cold seep water column. Here, field investigations and in situ experiments were conducted in Haima cold seep to examine the effects of diverse sources of dissolv

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria Inoculation to Enhance Vegetative Growth, Nitrogen Fixation and Nitrogen Remobilisation of Maize under Greenhouse Conditions.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) may provide a biological alternative to fix atmospheric N2 and delay N remobilisation in maize plant to increase crop yield, based on an understanding that plant-N remobilisation is directly correlated to its plant senescence. Thus, four PGPR strains were selected from a series of bacterial strains isolated from maize roots at two locations in Malaysia. The PGPR strains were screened in vitro for their biochemical plant growth-promoting (PGP) abilities and plant growth promotion assays. These strains were identified as Klebsiella sp. Br1, Klebsiella

Coupling bacterial nitrogen fixation to yeast whole-cell biocatalysis enables amine production using air as the sole nitrogen source.

BACKGROUND: Alkylamine production depends on ammonium produced via the energy-intensive, fossil-based Haber-Bosch process. Diazotrophic bacteria could offer a biological alternative by supplying nitrogen directly from air to heterotrophic whole-cell biocatalysts for alkylamine production. However, their integration with yeast production systems remains largely unexplored. RESULTS: Here, we evaluated the use of an ammonium-excreting strain of Azotobacter vinelandii (AZBB664) to supply nitrogen to an engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae biocatalyst for vanillylamine production using air as the s

Aphid infestation differently affects the defences of nitrate-fed and nitrogen-fixing Medicago truncatula and alters symbiotic nitrogen fixation.

Legumes can meet their nitrogen requirements through root nodule symbiosis, which could also trigger plant systemic resistance against pests. The pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum, a legume pest, can harbour different facultative symbionts (FS) influencing various traits of their hosts. It is therefore worth determining if and how the symbionts of the plant and the aphid modulate their interaction. We used different pea aphid lines without FS or with a single one (Hamiltonella defensa, Regiella insecticola, Serratia symbiotica) to infest Medicago truncatula plants inoculated with Sinorhizobium mel

Editing a gibberellin receptor gene improves yield and nitrogen fixation in soybean.

Soybean is an important source of oil, protein, and feed. However, its yield is far below that of major cereal crops. The green revolution increased the yield of cereal crops partially through high-density planting of lodging-resistant semi-dwarf varieties, but required more nitrogen fertilizers, posing an environmental threat. Genes that can improve nitrogen use efficiency need to be integrated into semi-dwarf varieties to avoid the overuse of fertilizers without the loss of dwarfism. Unlike cereal crops, soybean can assimilate atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic bacteria. Here, we created

Design Refinement of Catalytic System for Scale-Up Mild Nitrogen Photo-Fixation.

Ammonia and nitric acid, versatile industrial feedstocks, and burgeoning clean energy vectors hold immense promise for sustainable development. However, Haber-Bosch and Ostwald processes, which generates carbon dioxide as massive by-product, contribute to greenhouse effects and pose environmental challenges. Thus, the pursuit of nitrogen fixation through carbon-neutral pathways under benign conditions is a frontier of scientific topics, with the harnessing of solar energy emerging as an enticing and viable option. This review delves into the refinement strategies for scale-up mild photocatalyt

Hydrogen Sulfide Promotes Nodulation and Nitrogen Fixation in Soybean-Rhizobia Symbiotic System.

The rhizobium-legume symbiotic system is crucial for nitrogen cycle balance in agriculture. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gaseous signaling molecule, may regulate various physiological processes in plants. However, whether H2S has regulatory effect in this symbiotic system remains unknown. Herein, we investigated the possible role of H2S in the symbiosis between soybean (Glycine max) and rhizobium (Sinorhizobium fredii). Our results demonstrated that an exogenous H2S donor (sodium hydrosulfide [NaHS]) treatment promoted soybean growth, nodulation, and nitrogenase (Nase) activity. Western blotting

Chlorpyrifos inhibits nitrogen fixation in rice-vegetated soil containing Pseudomonas stutzeri A1501.

Chlorpyrifos, a common organophosphorus pesticide, is widely used for agricultural pest control and can inhibit nitrogen-fixing bacteria biomass in paddy. In this study, the additions of chlorpyrifos (1 and 8 mg kg-1) to soil, with or without Pseudomonas stutzeri A1501, resulted in a significant decrease in nitrogen fixation, despite insignificant effects on the abundances of P. stutzeri A1501 and bacteria in soil. Toxic effect of chlorpyrifos on P. stutzeri A1501 nitrogenase activity in medium was also observed, accompanied by a significant reduction in the expression of nitrogen-fixing relat

Nitrogen fixation and ammonia switch-off in the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas viridis.

Rhodopseudomonas viridis ATCC 19567 grows by means of nitrogen fixation in yeast extract-N2 or nitrogen-free medium when sparged with 5% CO2 and 95% N2 in the light at 30 degrees C. Acetylene reduction assays for nitrogenase activity revealed an initially high level of activity during early-logarithmic growth phase, a lower plateau during mid- to late-logarithmic phase, and a dramatic reduction of activity at the beginning of the stationary phase. When viewed by electron microscopy, nitrogen-fixing R. viridis cells appeared to be morphologically and ultrastructurally similar to cells grown on

Chronic Nitrogen Deposition Alters Diazotrophic Community Composition, Reduces Biological Nitrogen Fixation, and Restructures Fungal-Diazotroph CO-Occurrence Networks in Deadwood.

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) by diazotrophs contributes to increasing nitrogen (N) availability in nutrient-poor deadwood during the decomposition process. However, chronically elevated atmospheric N deposition may increase N availability, thereby reshaping diazotrophic community and suppressing BNF. We simulated high N deposition by repeatedly applying ammonium-nitrate solution to deadwood of 13 tree species over 9 years (N addition) and compared diazotrophic community composition and BNF rates with untreated controls. Deadwood N concentrations increased over time in both control and N

Highly efficient tribocatalytic nitrogen fixation of hydrothermally-synthesized Bi2S3 driven by mechanical friction.

Nitrogen (N2) fixation for ammonia (NH3) synthesis is a critical way for achieving carbon neutrality and fostering sustainable development. For the synthesis of NH3, the sustainable and environmentally-friendly strategies using renewable and clean energy under ambient condition have attracted researchers' interest. Friction exists everywhere. As an emerging catalytic technology, tribocatalysis synergistically integrates the triboelectric effect with electrochemical processes. In this work, efficient tribocatalytic N2 fixation directly from air is obtained on the friction interface between bism

Enterobacteria-mediated nitrogen fixation in natural populations of the fruit fly Ceratitis capitata.

Nitrogen, although abundant in the atmosphere, is paradoxically a limited resource for multicellular organisms. In the Animalia, biological nitrogen fixation has solely been demonstrated in termites. We found that all individuals of field-collected Mediterranean fruit flies (Ceratitis capitata) harbour large diazotrophic enterobacterial populations that express dinitrogen reductase in the gut. Moreover, nitrogen fixation was demonstrated in isolated guts and in live flies and may significantly contribute to the fly's nitrogen intake. The presence of similar bacterial consortia in additional in

Sputter-Deposited Ruthenium Nitrides for Electrochemical Nitrogen Fixation to Ammonia under Ambient Conditions.

Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) under ambient conditions offers a promising route for ammonia synthesis, although it currently suffers from slow kinetics and competing hydrogen evolution. Transition metal nitrides (TMNs) enable efficient nitrogen activation via the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism; however, effectively suppressing nitrogen leaching under electrochemical conditions remains challenging. Here, we report a nanostructured ruthenium nitride (RuN) catalyst synthesized via magnetron sputtering, demonstrating its application for eNRR for the first time. Structural charact

Rare cyanobacteria drive nitrogen-fixation and cyanotoxin production in an Aphanizomenon-dominated bloom.

Late summer, recurring cyanobacterial blooms in Lake of the Woods (LOW) are polycyanobacterial and typically dominated by Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. LOW waters are typically nitrogen limited, relative to phosphorus. As such, the dominance of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, a putative nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium, suggests that its ability to fix nitrogen may be advantageous and aid in its ability to bloom. This study sought to quantify nitrogen fixation rates and identify cyanotoxin-producing species during the blooms. Throughout the 2021 season, we quantified nutrients, N-fixation rates, microbial

Efficient photocatalytic nitrogen fixation via oxygen vacancies in Zr-MOFs at ambient conditions.

Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is seen to be a potential technology for nitrogen reduction due to its eco-friendliness, low energy consumption, and environmental protection. In this study, photocatalysts with abundant oxygen vacancies (Zr-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid (Zr-NDC) and Zr-phthalic acid (Zr-BDC)) were designed using 1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid (H2NDC) and 1,4-phthalic acid (H2BDC) as ligands. Since the structure of H2NDC includes one extra benzene ring than H2BDC, the charge density differential of the organic ligand is probably altered. The hypothesis is proved by density f

sRNA154 a newly identified regulator of nitrogen fixation in Methanosarcina mazei strain Gö1.

Trans-encoded sRNA154 is exclusively expressed under nitrogen (N)-deficiency in Methanosarcina mazei strain Gö1. The sRNA154 deletion strain showed a significant decrease in growth under N-limitation, pointing toward a regulatory role of sRNA154 in N-metabolism. Aiming to elucidate its regulatory function we characterized sRNA154 by means of biochemical and genetic approaches. 24 homologs of sRNA154 were identified in recently reported draft genomes of Methanosarcina strains, demonstrating high conservation in sequence and predicted secondary structure with two highly conserved single stranded

Systemic Effects of Nitrate, Asparagine, and Glutamine on Nodulation and Biological Nitrogen Fixation in Soybean.

Although it is well established that nitrate exerts an inhibitory effect on nodulation and biological nitrogen fixation in soybean, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In soybean plants, nitrate is assimilated into asparagine (Asn) and glutamine (Gln); their systemic circulation within the plant may contribute to the reduced N-fixation capacity of nodules. To investigate the effects of nitrate, Asn, and Gln on soybean nodulation and biological N fixation, a unilateral nodulated double-root soybean system was used. The non-nodulated side roots were supplied with nitrate (14 mM), Asn (20 m
