CK20/CK7 double-negative Merkel cell carcinoma in situ: A case report.

An 83-year-old male with a history of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers presented with a light pink non-ulcerated slightly raised 0.6 × 0.5-cm papule on his left lower extremity. Biopsy specimen revealed a proliferation of intraepidermal round blue cells. On immunohistochemical staining, CD56, chromogranin, and pancytokeratin were faintly positive within the lesional population, while synaptophysin was strongly positive. CD45, CK5/6, CK7, CK20, Melan-A, SOX10, and TTF-1 stains were negative. There was no dermal component identified. A Merkel cell polyomavirus stain was negative. Dist

Melanoma as Subsequent Primary Malignancy in Hematologic Cancer Survivors-A Literature Review.

The occurrence of second primary malignancies is becoming increasingly important among cancer survivors. Melanoma, an aggressive neoplasm originating from the melanocytes, is responsible for most skin cancer-related deaths. This review aims to explore the risk of melanoma occurrence as a second primary cancer after the most common subtypes of hematologic neoplasia, a malignant disease originating from myeloid or lymphocytic cell lineages. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) are among the most associated subtypes with melanoma development. We also discuss the under

Completeness of case ascertainment in a Scottish regional cancer registry for the year 1992.

To assess completeness of case ascertainment by the Scottish Cancer Registry for the year 1992, we assembled a collection of databases containing potential registrations (excluding non-melanoma skin tumours and non-invasive neoplasms) from 14 separate sources relating to the population covered by one of the five regional registries. Apparently missed registrations were identified by linkage of these databases to cancer registration records. Their eligibility for registration was determined by reference in medical records, or when these were unavailable, by reference to the local Community Heal

Auricular Non-Epithelial Tumors with Solar Elastosis in Cats: A Possible UV-Induced Pathogenesis.

The photoinduced etiopathology of actinic keratosis and squamous cell carcinoma in feline species is well known. This etiology has also been reported for non-epithelial cutaneous tumors in other species. To date, no cases of auricular non-epithelial cutaneous neoplasms erased in a contest of actinic keratosis in cats have been reported. The aim of this study was to describe feline auricular non-epithelial cutaneous neoplasms associated with typical UV-induced cutaneous lesions and solar elastosis. The study was conducted on five feline cases diagnosed with auricular non-epithelial cutaneous tu

De Novo Skin Neoplasms in Liver-Transplanted Patients: Single-Center Prospective Evaluation of 105 Cases.

Background and Objectives: Solid-organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) are notably considered at risk for developing cutaneous malignancies. However, most of the existing literature is focused on kidney transplant-related non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs). Conflicting data have been published so far on NMSC incidence among liver transplant recipients (LTRs), and whether LTRs really should be considered at lower risk remains controversial. The aim of the present study was to prospectively collect data on the incidence of cutaneous neoplasms in an LTR cohort. Materials and Methods: All LTRs transp

Development of a new mouse model (xeroderma pigmentosum a-deficient, stem cell factor-transgenic) of ultraviolet B-induced melanoma.

It is well established that exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is the major environmental risk factor for the development of skin neoplasms. To date, however, there have been few appropriate mouse models available for studying the role of UVR in melanoma carcinogenesis, mainly because of the murine lack of the epidermal melanocyte, which is a major source of origin of human melanoma. In this study, we established xeroderma pigmentosum group A gene-deficient, stem cell factor-transgenic mice, which are defective in the repair of damaged DNA and do have epidermal melanocytes. Th

Advancing Electrochemotherapy in Melanoma and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer: From Clinical Practice to Emerging Frontiers.

Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a locoregional treatment that combines poorly permeable drugs, commonly bleomycin (BLM) or cisplatin (CDDP), with electric pulses that induce electroporation. By transiently increasing cell membrane permeability, ECT promotes intracellular drug accumulation, enhancing cytotoxic effects while minimizing undesirable systemic toxicity. Beyond its direct cytotoxic effects, ECT exerts additional antitumour mechanisms that contribute to tumour control. These include the induction of immunogenic cell death (ICD), leading to activation of innate and adaptive immune respons

Pleomorphic spindle cell dermal neoplasm with dot-like keratin reactivity: keratin-positive AFX or carcinoma?

Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is an uncommon cutaneous neoplasm of pleomorphic myofibroblast-like cells. Diagnosis requires exclusion of other undifferentiated spindle and pleomorphic cell neoplasms by immunohistochemistry. We report two patients with p63-non-reactive spindle cell neoplasms which resembled AFX but demonstrated anomalous dot-like immunolabeling with antibodies to high molecular weight keratin and keratin 5. One case recurred locally, suggesting such lesions may behave aggressively. Whether these lesions represent keratin-positive dermal sarcomas or poorly differentiated carcinom

Dermatoscopy of Neoplastic Skin Lesions: Recent Advances, Updates, and Revisions.

Dermatoscopy (dermoscopy) improves the diagnosis of benign and malignant cutaneous neoplasms in comparison with examination with the unaided eye and should be used routinely for all pigmented and non-pigmented cutaneous neoplasms. It is especially useful for the early stage of melanoma when melanoma-specific criteria are invisible to the unaided eye. Preselection by the unaided eye is therefore not recommended. The increased availability of polarized dermatoscopes, and the extended use of dermatoscopy in non-pigmented lesions led to the discovery of new criteria, and we recommend that lesions

Fine-needle aspiration diagnosis of unusual cutaneous neoplasms of the scalp in HIV-infected patients: a report of two cases and review of the literature.

We report on two unusual, non-AIDS-defining scalp neoplasms, Merkel-cell carcinoma (MCC) and malignant melanoma, in 2 men with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). In the first patient, metastatic MCC was initially diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of a posterior cervical lymph node, based on the cytomorphology and the characteristic immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features. No skin lesion was initially apparent, but a 0.3-mm scalp primary was found during the ensuing neck dissection. In the second patient, recurrent and metastatic malignant melanoma from a Breslow 1.3-mm

Dermoscopic Criteria, Histopathological Correlates and Genetic Findings of Thin Melanoma on Non-Volar Skin.

Dermoscopy is a non-invasive, in vivo technique that allows the visualization of subsurface skin structures in the epidermis, at the dermoepidermal junction, and in the upper dermis. Dermoscopy brought a new dimension in evaluating melanocytic skin neoplasms (MSN) also representing a link between clinical and pathologic examination of any MSN. However, histopathology remains the gold standard in diagnosing MSN. Dermoscopic-pathologic correlation enhances the level of quality of MSN diagnosis and increases the level of confidence of pathologists. Melanoma is one of the most genetically predispo

Intraocular collision tumour: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: "Collision" tumours consist of different neoplasms coexisting within a single lesion. Whilst quite common in the skin, the gastrointestional tract, and the ovaries, intraocular collision tumours are exceedingly rare. We describe an exceptional case of a combined uveal melanoma and intraocular plasmacytoma. METHODS: Observational case report. A 61-year-old woman underwent enucleation for rubeotic glaucoma and cells in the anterior chamber after proton-beam radiotherapy of a cilio-choroidal melanoma of the right eye. Examination of the enucleated eye was performed with immunohistoch

Histopathological evaluation of parotid gland neoplasms in Queensland, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland tumours are complex neoplasms with a broad histological range. The parotid gland is also a common site of face and scalp skin cancer metastases. METHOD: Parotidectomies performed by ENT department in the Gold Coast health district from 2006 to 2013. RESULTS: A total of 158 specimens were examined. Of these, 53.80 per cent were benign and 46.20 per cent were malignant. Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common tumour (29.11 per cent), followed by cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (23.42 per cent) and Warthin's tumour (12.03 per cent). CONCLUSION: Metastatic squamous c

Amelanotic Melanoma Concealed by Psoriasis.

Amelanotic melanoma (AM) is a rare subtype of cutaneous melanoma that lacks melanin pigment. Clinical diagnosis of AM is challenging because it may mimic benign or malignant melanocytic and non-melanocytic neoplasms and inflammatory skin diseases. Completely amelanotic melanomas are rare, but approximately 2-8% of all melanomas lack pigment or are sparsely pigmented (1, 2). AM often present a particular diagnostic challenge due to their inconspicuous appearance and lack of the classical, well-recognized characteristics and clues found in pigmented lesions (3). In particular, when concealed by

Successful treatment of hydroxyurea-associated chronic leg ulcers associated with squamous cell carcinoma.

Hydroxyurea (HU) is an antineoplastic drug used in the treatment of chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). HU is associated with cutaneous adverse effects, whereas severe complications such as leg ulcers and non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) are rare and only observed after long-term treatment. We herein report a patient with essential thrombocythemia (ET) treated chronically with HU, and who developed refractory bilateral leg ulcers complicated by squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) over both heels. The patient was successfully managed by multiple debridement stages and skin grafting surgerie

Chemotherapy of rare skin adnexal tumors: a review of literature.

Malignant skin adnexal tumors are rare neoplasms which are derived from adnexal epithelial structures of the skin: hair follicle, or sebaceous, apocrine or eccrine glands. Among them, eccrine porocarcinoma is the most frequent, with an aggressive behavior compared to other more common forms of non-melanoma skin cancer. Only few reports describe the treatment of metastatic adnexal tumors, and there is no consensus about the better strategy of chemotherapy. Given the few cases and the absence of randomized clinical trials, it is important to collect clinical experiences on these tumors. Most of

Histopathological diagnosis of small melanocytic lesions suspicious for malignant melanoma.

The concern about malignant skin neoplasms leads to the excision of smaller lesions. This study on small melanocytic lesions aims to evaluate the range of possible histopathological diagnoses, describe histopathological aspects, and assess the usefulness of serial histological sections. We performed a cross-sectional descriptive histopathological study examining 76 pigmented skin lesions up to 6 mm in diameter. Histopathological diagnoses included atypical melanocytic nevi (n=38), common melanocytic nevi (n=18), atypical lentiginous melanocytic hyperplasia with architectural features of atypic

[Cutaneous neoplasms].

The skin is the organ most commonly affected by malignancies. Various cancers of the skin show a dramatic increase in incidence over the last decades. Epithelial skin tumors are most frequently, e.g., basal cell carcinoma and the squamous cell carcinoma with its precursors, the actinic keratoses. Melanoma, which is extremely difficult to treat in advanced tumor stages, is dreaded. Besides that, there are other epithelial malignant diseases, e.g. Morbus Bowen and adnexal tumors originating from the skin appendices. Mesenchymal malignant neoplasias such as Morbus Kaposi, angiosarcomas and other

Amelanotic malignant melanoma of the esophagus. Report of a case.

Primary malignant melanomas of the esophagus are rare neoplasms with aggressive behavior and tendency to lymphatic and hematogenous spread. We report on a patient affected with a primary amelanotic melanoma of the esophagus synchronous to a squamous cell carcinoma of the epiglottis and treated by subtotal esophagectomy. A 58-year-old woman presented with a three-month history of dysphagia, retrosternal pain and weight loss. An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a 3 cm, non pigmented, polypoid mass of the middle esophagus and biopsy was consistent with undifferentiated carcinoma. Fiberop
