Nonodontogenic cysts of the oral and maxillofacial region: demographic profile in a Brazilian population over a 40-year period.

The aim of the study was to determine the distribution of histologically diagnosed nonodontogenic cysts (nOCs) over a 40-year period in a Brazilian population. Biopsy records from patients with nOC from the files of the Oral Pathology Service during the period of 1970-2009 were evaluated. Among 10,311 oral biopsies, 58 met the criteria of nOCs. The most frequent nOCs were nasopalatine duct cysts (32.8%), followed by epidermoid cysts (20.7%) and oral lymphoepithelial cysts (17.2%). Nasopalatine duct cysts showed predominance among females (68.4%). Epidermoid cysts were most commonly found in th

Transnasal endoscopic marsupialization of bilateral nasoalveolar cysts.

Nasoalveolar cysts are uncommon nonodontogenic and developmental cysts with an uncertain pathogenesis. This cyst has been reported to occur bilaterally in 10-11% of cases. This case report describes a 45-year-old woman in whom the clinicopathologic findings were consistent with bilateral nasoalveolar cysts. The authors report a new, less invasive method for transnasal endoscopic marsupialization of bilateral nasoalveolar cysts. Transnasal endoscopic marsupialization has benefits for the treatment of bilateral and unilateral nasoalveolar cysts.

Is ultrasonography useful in the diagnosis of nasolabial cyst?

Nasolabial cysts are nonodontogenic cysts that occur beneath the ala nasi. Its pathogenesis is uncertain. Because the nasolabial cyst is a soft tissue lesion, plain radiographs are useless. CT and MRI should be evaluated. In this report, a nasolabial cyst is described including its features on ultrasonography (USG) and CT exams.

True median palatal cyst; a rare case report.

Median palatal cyst is rare nonodontogenic lesion as it represents only 7.14% of all jaw cysts. Also called mid palatal cyst has raised controversy about pathogenesis of such fissural cysts. Specific diagnostic criteria have been described for true median palatal cyst after it has been excluded from WHO classification. The purpose of this paper is to report a rare case of true median palatal cyst satisfying these criteria and discuss current controversy about these cysts.

The differential diagnosis of globulomaxillary radiolucencies.

The differential diagnosis of radiolucencies which occur in the globulomaxillary region includes a variety of odontogenic cysts and tumors, inflammatory lesions, and a number of nonodontogenic conditions. The accumulating embryologic and histopathologic evidence suggests that the development of fissural cysts in this region of the maxilla is highly unlikely. If they occur at all, such cysts must be extremely rare indeed and therefore do not belong on any clinician's list of differential diagnoses.

Multiple non-odontogenic cysts--a case report.

Nonodontogenic cysts have been identified at various locations in oral cavity. These occur primarily in relation to fusion of maxillary process either with its counterpart or different portions of nasal part of frontonasal process. Usually solitary, these primarily affect maxilla alone; can rarely be seen in ramus of mandible. We present a case of multiple non-odontogenic cysts involving both maxilla and mandible.

[Extra-osseous maxillary cysts--nasolabial cyst].

The maxillary cysts are classified on the basis of the recommendations by the World Health Organisation (1971), based on pathogenic criteria, in developmental and inflammatory, odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts. Only two maxillary cysts lie primarily extraosseous: a non-odontogenic cyst, the nasolabial cyst, and an odontogenic cyst, the gingival cyst. The nasolabial cyst is a rare, developmental, non-odontogenic maxillary cyst, which offers the peculiarity of its constant extraosseous localization. On the basis of our cases from 1966 to 1988 the clinical patterns, histopathology, differenti

CT analysis of a complicated nasopalatine duct cyst.

A study was conducted to evaluate CT imaging in differentiating nonodontogenic nasopalatine duct cysts from odontogenic radicular cysts. The patient's palatine cystic lesion was analyzed by CT and excised with postoperative microscopic identification. CT findings of a nasopalatine cyst are midline location, smooth expansion with sclerotic margins and displacement of teeth apices. Radicular cysts differ in that the teeth apices are within the cyst rather than being displaced. We concluded that differentiation is clearly demonstrated by CT images.

[A rare cause of facial asymmetry: nasoalveolar cyst: a clinical report].

UNLABELLED: Nasoalveolar cysts are rare nonodontogenic cysts that develop from the soft tissue in the mucobuccal area of the nasal ala. Their origin is a residuum of the nasolacrimal canal. CLINICAL CASE: A 45-year-old woman had been aware of a painless tumor at the base of the nose and in the region of the left nasal ala for several months. We diagnosed a nasolabial cyst, which was extirpated in toto through a combined transvestibular-transnasal approach.

A case report on a nasolabial cyst presenting with a nasolacrimal sac cyst.

Nasolabial cysts are rare, nonodontogenic soft tissue developmental cysts that occur in the maxillary lip and nasal alar regions. Patients with this type of cyst generally presents with an asymptomatic soft swelling that may obliterate the nasolabial fold, elevate the nasal ala or the floor of the nose and fill the labial vestibule intraorally. The exact origin of nasolabial cysts is uncertain. The seed theory suggests that these cysts develop from a misplaced epithelium of the nasolacrimal duct because of their similar location and histologic appearance. This report aimed to present a case of

Bilateral nasolabial cysts: MRI findings in a rare case report.

Nasolabial cysts are rare, benign, nonodontogenic, extraosseous maxillofacial lesions, with bilateral involvement being uncommon. A 40-year-old woman presented with long-standing bilateral nasal vestibular swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated well-defined bilateral cystic lesions along the nasal floor with characteristic signal intensities and smooth anterior maxillary bone scalloping, consistent with bilateral nasolabial cysts containing internal debris. This case highlights the characteristic MRI appearance of bilateral nasolabial cysts and emphasizes the role of MRI in ac

Endonasal endoscopic approach for recurrent nasolabial cyst.

Nasolabial cysts are rare nonodontogenic cystic lesions in the soft tissue of the midface and usually present with painless asymptomatic swelling in the nasolabial region. Surgical excision via sublabial approach is considered as the standard treatment. However, endonasal endoscopic marsupialization of the cyst is reported as an effective alternative method for nasolabial cysts. Marsupialization of the cyst is believed to integrate the nasolabial cyst into a part of the nasal cavity as an air-containing sinus. In this article, we present an endonasal endoscopic marsupialization technique in ca
