Nonverbal communication and early language acquisition in children with Down syndrome and in normally developing children.

Many children with Down syndrome display asynchrony in development with the acquisition of language preceding at a slower pace than the acquisition of other cognitive skills. Recent research suggests that the expressive language delays that are displayed by these children may be associated with an earlier disturbance in the development of nonverbal requesting skills (Mundy, Sigman, Kasari, & Yirmiya, 1988; Smith & von Tetzchner, 1986). To test this hypothesis, a longitudinal study of 37 children with Down syndrome and 25 children with normal development was conducted. The results of the study

The Impact of Anodal tDCS on Verbal and Nonverbal Functional Communication in Subacute Aphasia-An Observational Study.

Background/Objectives: While a growing number of studies have demonstrated positive effects of adjuvant anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on linguistic performance in aphasia, evidence for corresponding effects on verbal and-in particular-nonverbal functional communication remains absent. This is a critical gap, given that restoring everyday communicative competence is the ultimate goal of speech and language therapy (SLT). In the present observational study, we investigated the add-on effect of anodal tDCS over language-relevant left-hemispheric areas on verbal and nonverb

Language level and nonverbal social-communicative behaviors in autistic and language-delayed children.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship of general expressive language delay to nonverbal social-communicative deficits and repetitive behaviors associated with autism in preschool children. METHOD: Interviews of the parents of 51 autistic and 43 nonautistic 3- to 5-year-olds with language impairments were compared. RESULTS: Main effects of the children's language level occurred for the majority of social and nonverbal communication items but not for restricted, repetitive behaviors or showing and directing attention, socially directed gaze, or range of facial expression. CONCLUSIONS: In add

A pilot study on the efficacy of melodic based communication therapy for eliciting speech in nonverbal children with autism.

The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of melodic based communication therapy (MBCT) to traditional speech and language therapy for eliciting speech in nonverbal children with autism. Participants were 12 nonverbal children with autism ages 5 through 7 randomly assigned to either treatment group. Both groups made significant progress after treatment. The MBCT group progressed significantly in number of verbal attempts after weeks 1 through 4 and number of correct words after weeks 1 and 3, while the traditional group progressed significantly after weeks 4 and 5. No significant d

Nonverbal communication of patients with borderline personality disorder during clinical interviews: a double-blind placebo-controlled study using intranasal oxytocin.

Interpersonal dysfunction is central to borderline personality disorder (BPD). Recent research has focused on the role of oxytocin (OT) in BPD, with mixed results regarding the processing of social information. Fifteen BPD patients and 15 controls participated in two clinical interviews, one under OT and one under placebo, which were randomly conducted 1 week apart in a double-blind fashion. Nonverbal behavior was evaluated using the Ethological Coding System for Interviews. Childhood trauma was examined using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. The patients with BPD showed less affiliative be

Universal lessons learned by a gastroenterologist from a deaf and mute patient: the importance of nonverbal communication and establishing patient rapport and trust.

Deaf and mute patients may require minimal extra attention to establish trust and allay anxieties before minor medical maneuvers such as rectal examination. An extreme case is reported of the consequences from failure to accomplish this. A generally cooperative deaf and mute patient struggled and suffered a rectal tear and perforation during enema insertion that required emergency colorectal surgery; his nurse had failed to establish a trusting relationship before enema insertion. Ironically, the patient's physician had earlier easily performed digital rectal examination, a similar medical man

The long-term impact of early adverse experience on adaptive functioning: a pilot study integrating measures of mental status, nonverbal communication, and heart rate variability.

Background: Childhood maltreatment (CM) can disrupt the development of behavioural and physiological systems, increasing the risk of physical and psychological adverse outcomes across the lifespan. CM may cause interpersonal dysfunctions that impair social communication and lead to dysfunctional activation of the autonomic nervous system. The present exploratory study analyzed the long-term impact of CM from an integrated perspective through the simultaneous assessment of psychological symptoms, social and behavioural communication, and physiological regulation. Methods: Participants were 55 he

Nonverbal behavior during clinical interviews: similarities and dissimilarities among schizophrenia, mania, and depression.

Research has shown that patients with schizophrenia and depression differ from nonclinical subjects in nonverbal behavior. In contrast, there is a paucity of studies addressing differences in nonverbal communication between diagnostic groups and as to what extent nonverbal communication feeds into standard ratings of psychopathology. Twenty-six patients with schizophrenia were compared with 24 patients with affective disorders (13 depressed, 11 manic) regarding their nonverbal behavior using the Ethological Coding System for Interviews. Symptom severity was rated using the Brief Psychiatric Ra

Enhancing Description and Interpretation of Qualitative Interviews With People With Intellectual Disabilities Through Nonverbal and Paraverbal Data Collection and Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Qualitative research involving interviews typically includes transcribing verbal data. However, insights about meaning can also be ascertained from nonverbal and paraverbal communications. Transcribing nonverbal data allows researchers to include and analyze this additional data whilst ensuring participants' confidentiality. METHODS: Six participants with intellectual disabilities were interviewed using Talking Mats as a communication tool to support data collection. The verbal, nonverbal, and paraverbal data were transcribed using a notation system and analysed using triangulatio

Predicting language outcomes for young prelinguistic children with developmental delay.

The purpose of this study was to examine potential relationships between children's prelinguistic communication behaviors and subsequent (12 months later) expressive and receptive language outcomes. Participants included 25 toddlers with developmental delay and their mothers. The dyads were observed during natural interactions at 6-month intervals over a 12-month period for a total of 3 observation points (O1, O2, O3). Children's rate of nonverbal behavior that is often perceived as communication by adults was identified at O1 and O2. In the investigation, the children's intentional nonverbal

Teaching young children with autism to talk.

Frequent functional spoken communication is a common goal for young children with autism. We propose that the number of different nonimitative, referential, conventional, and communicative words used in a language sample is a reasonable measure of the behavior we wish to increase in such children. We review our own and others' studies focusing on young (i.e., 2 to 3 years old) children with autism to provide a rationale for including object play and nonverbal communication as potentially important treatment goals. Children who are not yet fluent in object play and nonverbal communication may n

Affiliative behaviour and conflictual communication during brief family therapy of patients with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Although patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) present positive responses to family therapy, the key features of therapeutic changes still require identification. This study explores the role of conflictual communication and affiliative nonverbal behaviour in therapeutic change in brief strategic family therapy (BSFT) for AN patients. METHODS: Ten female AN patients and their parents were included in the sample and took part in a 6-month follow-up of BSFT. The durations of conflictual communication and of affiliative nonverbal behaviour estimated by eye contact were compared between

[Communication with patients in the intensive care unit].

Communication is one of the fundamental human needs. It includes not only expressing oneself but also verbal and nonverbal communication and establishing contact to other people. In the context of intensive care treatment, influences such as sedation, delirium or the need for an artificial airway, be it a tube or tracheostomy, can make verbal communication almost impossible. In addition, nonverbal communication possibilities are often restricted by physical weakness or illness. Despite these difficulties, there is always a communication relationship, verbal or nonverbal, between patients in th

Charlie Chaplin and gesture training in severe aphasia: A controlled double-blind single-case experimental design.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia following a stroke is a frequent and disabling condition that decreases quality of life. The use of gesture has been proposed as a way to enhance aphasia recovery. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore whether 2 types of gesture interventions could improve communication in individuals with severe aphasia. METHODS: This was a pilot study performed at home in routine care by an outreach team. The study had a controlled double-blind single-case experimental design (SCED): a controlled multiple baseline design across 3 participants and 2 behaviors (gesture and naming). Three male pa

Pragmatic features in patients with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous disorder. Despite the fact that communication and language skills may be impaired in schizophrenia, only a few studies have examined specific aspects of pragmatic competence in these patients. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the pragmatic skills of schizophrenic patients and a control group. Forty-three schizophrenic patients with a Mean ± SD age of 40 ± 1.21 years old and a control group were assessed using the Adult Pragmatics Profile (APP), which is a validated tool consisting of three scales: verbal, nonverbal and paralinguistic. The participants in

Communication abilities in children with hearing loss - views of parents and daycare professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Today, children with hearing loss (HL) are diagnosed and fitted with hearing devices at an early age. However, HL may still influence their communicative development. Thus, we need up-to-date research on how children perform in their everyday environments, such as at home or daycare. This study provides an overview of the communication abilities of early-diagnosed children with HL reported by parents and daycare professionals. The first aim of the study is to compare the results of children with bilateral hearing aids (BiHAs) or bilateral cochlear implants (BiCIs) with those of c
