Auricular perichondritis is an uncommon complication following surgery of the external ear. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most commonly associated pathogen. Presented is a patient with auricular perichondritis successfully treated with norfloxacin, a newly available, orally administered antibiotic with antipseudomonal activity.

The clinical efficacy of norfloxacin (NFLX) was evaluated in 74 patients having chronic prostatitis with the subjective symptoms suggesting the inflammations of prostate and more than five white bloodcells (WBCs)/hpf in their prostatic secretions (EPS). Of these, gram negative rods with greater than or equal to 10(3)CFU/ml (GNR group) were isolated from the EPS in 10 patients (13.6%) and gram positive cocci with greater than or equal to 10(3) CFU/ml (GPC group) were obtained in 46 patients (62.2%). E. coli (70.0%) was the most frequent strain isolated among GNR group and S. epidermidis (40.4%)

PURPOSE: To report a case of corneal ulcer associated with deposits of norfloxacin.
METHOD: Case report. A 40-year-old man with right trigeminal and facial nerve palsies and decreased tear secretion developed a corneal ulcer with white deposits in the right eye. The deposits were removed and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography.
RESULTS: High-performance liquid chromatography results disclosed that the deposits on the corneal surface had the same retention time as norfloxacin. The patient discontinued norfloxacin ophthalmic solution and recovered successfully.

The minimal inhibitory concentration of norfloxacin to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans strains isolated from patients with localized juvenile periodontitis was determined by using an agar dilution method. All the tested strains, including the three reference strains, were susceptible at concentrations lower than the breakpoint used, with 90% of the strains susceptible to 0.125 micrograms/ml.

In a randomized clinical trial, norfloxacin was compared with nalidixic acid in the treatment of acute invasive diarrhea, with particular reference to shigellosis in adults. Of 104 patients studied, 40 were positive for Shigella in stool cultures, of which 22 received norfloxacin and 18 received nalidixic acid. The patients in these two groups were comparable on admission. We studied clinical effects of norfloxacin (NFLX, AM-715) tablets. The results we found are summarized as follows: 1. Ten patients with 5 diseases were medicated with 7.0-14.8 mg/kg of the drug 3 times daily for 6-8 days. They consisted of one-each with tonsillitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, 4 with Campylobacter enteritis, 3 with other enteritis. We treated 12 eyes with Pseudomonas ulcerative keratitis with topical 0.3% Norfloxacin drops (Ranbaxy Laboratories). Excellent response was achieved in all eyes, resulting in complete ulcer resolution. The healing time varied from 12 to 20 days. There was a marked improvement over the pretreatment visual acuity in 11 of the 12 eyes. No systemic or ocular side effects were observed during the study period. The present study strongly suggests that topical norfloxacin is a potent and effective drug in the treatment of Pseudomonas ulcerative keratitis.

Norfloxacin is an oral fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agent recently released for the treatment of uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections. The drug antagonizes DNA gyrase, an enzyme essential for bacterial DNA replication. We evaluated the efficacy of oral norfloxacin in 15 patients with culture-proven gonococcal eye disease caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
