Prevalence of type I spinal muscular atrophy in North Dakota.

In order to establish the incidence and prevalence of type I spinal muscular atrophy (SMA Werdnig-Hoffmann disease) in North Dakota, we reviewed the death certificates for the past 8 years. Between 1980 and 1987 the prevalence of was 1.5 per 10,000. The incidence was 1 in 6,720. This suggests a carrier frequency of 1 in 41 in North Dakota with a gene frequency of 0.0122. In North Dakota, type I spinal muscular atrophy appears to be 3 to 10 times more common than in other locations.

Casino gambling among older adults in North Dakota: a policy analysis.

This article examined social issues surrounding casino gambling among older adults both nationally and in the state of North Dakota. An exploratory review of gambling trends among older adults and an examination of policies to protect older gamblers revealed that older adults are targeted by the gaming industry as a lucrative market (Singh et al. J Retail Leisure Property 2007, 6(1):61-68). The authors used the national literature to frame their qualitative study, which explored gambling issues among older adults in North Dakota from the perspective of six counselors trained in gambling addict

Vaccination Motivators and Deterrents Among Undervaccinated Older Adults in North Dakota.

Despite increased risk of morbidity and mortality among older adults due to preventable infectious diseases such as influenza, shingles, pneumonia, and COVID-19, many forego receiving some, if not all, of these vaccinations. This study examines vaccination motivators and deterrents for undervaccinated older adults in North Dakota (ND). Adults aged 65+ in ND were mailed a survey (n = 901) with questions gauging vaccination behaviors and perceptions, with 132 of these indicating not receiving certain vaccinations. Further questions assessed reasons they have not been vaccinated against the follo

Emergence of fluoroquinolone-resistant Neisseria meningitidis--Minnesota and North Dakota, 2007-2008.

Meningoccocal disease causes substantial morbidity and mortality; approximately 10% of cases are fatal. Among those who survive, 10%-15% have long-term sequelae. Nasopharyngeal carriage of Neisseria meningitidis is a precursor to disease; however, the majority of carriers do not develop disease. Household and other close contacts of persons with meningococcal disease have a higher risk for carriage and therefore invasive disease. These persons should receive antibiotic chemoprophylaxis to eliminate nasopharyngeal carriage of N. meningitidis as soon as possible. The rate of secondary disease fo

Host-feeding behavior of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in North Dakota, 2003 to 2006.

Mosquitoes are abundant near temporary, semipermanent, and permanent water in North Dakota and are associated with human and veterinary diseases. Little is known about the feeding habits of mosquitoes as related to the transmission of arboviruses. We report on the identification of vertebrate hosts of 9 species of mosquitoes collected in 2003 to 2006. Blood meals of 1,223 from 9 mosquito species were identified to vertebrate species by PCR assays using the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Aedes dorsalis (Diptera: Culicidae) and Culiseta inornata fed only on mammals, and Aedes vexans fed almost

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Unintended Pregnancy: Evidence From North Dakota PRAMS, 2017-2020.

INTRODUCTION: Unintended pregnancy remains a significant public health issue with lasting consequences. Adverse childhood experiences are linked to risky behaviors and poor reproductive outcomes; however, limited research has examined optimal approaches to measuring adverse childhood experience exposure in rural populations. This study examines the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and pregnancy intendedness in North Dakota from 2017 to 2020. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used North Dakota Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data (N=2,973). A cumulative adverse

Detailed examination of fenfluramine-phentermine users with valve abnormalities identified in Fargo, North Dakota.

Although several studies have reported on valve abnormalities among users of fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine, detailed information on these subjects has not been provided, limiting the ability to understand who may be at risk for valve abnormalities and to generate hypotheses about the etiology and pathogenesis of these abnormalities. This study was a detailed medical record review of 18 previously reported users of fenfluramine and phentermine, all with valve abnormalities on echocardiogram and 2 with surgical pathology. Both clinical characteristics and medication use were recorded by traine

Key Factors Influencing the Incidence of West Nile Virus in Burleigh County, North Dakota.

The city of Bismarck, North Dakota has one of the highest numbers of West Nile Virus (WNV) cases per population in the U.S. Although the city conducts extensive mosquito surveillance, the mosquito abundance alone may not fully explain the occurrence of WNV. Here, we developed models to predict mosquito abundance and the number of WNV cases, independently, by statistically analyzing the most important climate and virus transmission factors. An analysis with the mosquito model indicated that the mosquito numbers increase during a warm and humid summer or after a severely cold winter. In addition

West Nile virus epizootiology, central Red River Valley, North Dakota and Minnesota, 2002-2005.

West Nile virus (WNV) epizootiology was monitored from 2002 through 2005 in the area surrounding Grand Forks, North Dakota. Mosquitoes were tested for infection, and birds were surveyed for antibodies. In 2003, WNV was epidemic; in 2004, cool temperatures precluded WNV amplification; and in 2005, immunity in passerines decreased, but did not preclude, WNV amplification.
