What makes Cryptococcus gattii a pathogen?

Cryptococcosis is an invasive fungal infection of humans and other animals, typically caused by the species Cryptococcus neoformans in patients with impaired immunity. However, there is growing recognition of the importance of the related species C. gattii in causing infections in apparently immunocompetent individuals. In particular, an ongoing outbreak of cryptococcal disease in the Pacific Northwest region, which started in 1999, has driven an intense research effort into this previously neglected pathogen. Here, we discuss some of the recent discoveries in this organism from the Pacific No

Mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequences help identify North American ticks in the genus Argas (Acari: Argasidae).

Argas (Acari: Argasidae) ticks in the United States include 8 species that parasitize domestic fowl and numerous wild avian species. Ticks infesting a single nest tree of a bald eagle Haliaeetus leucocephalus (Linnaeus) in southern Arizona (United States) were received for identification and included 2 species, Argas (Persicargas) radiatus Railliet (Acari: Argasidae) and Argas (Persicargas) ricei Hoogstraal, Kaiser, Clifford & Keirans (Acari: Argasidae). Their identities were based on key morphological characters supported by mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequences compared to museum reference specim

Human plague in the USA: the importance of regional and local climate.

A 56-year time series of human plague cases (Yersinia pestis) in the western United States was used to explore the effects of climatic patterns on plague levels. We found that the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), together with previous plague levels and above-normal temperatures, explained much of the plague variability. We propose that the PDO's impact on plague is conveyed via its effect on precipitation and temperature and the effect of precipitation and temperature on plague hosts and vectors: warmer and wetter climate leading to increased plague activity and thus an increased number of

Is the effect of forest structure on bird diversity modified by forest productivity?

Currently, the most common strategy when managing forests for biodiversity at the landscape scale is to maintain structural complexity within stands and provide a variety of seral stages across landscapes. Advances in ecological theory reveal that biodiversity at continental scales is strongly influenced by available energy (i.e., climate factors relating to heat and light and primary productivity). This paper explores how available energy and forest structural complexity may interact to drive biodiversity at a regional scale. We hypothesized that bird species richness exhibits a hump-shaped r

Increase in antimicrobial resistance in bacteria isolated from stranded marine mammals of the Northwest Atlantic.

Studies on marine mammals can inform our understanding of the environmental health of the ocean. To evaluate the potential for changes in antimicrobial resistance, we analyzed a database spanning 2004-2010 that consisted of bacterial isolate identity and antimicrobial sensitivity for stranded pinnipeds in the Northwest Atlantic. Samples (n = 170) from treated animals yielded 310 bacterial isolates representing 24 taxa. We evaluated changes in antimicrobial class resistance from 2004 to 2010 for eight taxa. Escherichia coli displayed a significant increase in resistance to several antimicrobial

Necrotic arachnidism--Pacific Northwest, 1988-1996.

Although spider bites are common in many parts of the United States, most domestic spiders are not substantially venomous to man. The best known exceptions are widow spiders (Latrodectus spp., including the black widow L. mactans) and brown spiders (Loxesceles spp., particularly the brown recluse, Lox. reclusa). However, cases of arachnid envenomation from the hobo spider (Tegenaria agrestis) are being reported increasingly in the Pacific Northwest. This report summarizes investigations of three cases of T. agrestis bites among persons in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington; spider bites reported to

Anticoagulant rodenticides are associated with increased stress and reduced body condition of avian scavengers in the Pacific Northwest.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (AR) have been used globally to manage commensal rodents for decades. However their application has also resulted in primary, secondary, and tertiary poisoning in wildlife. Widespread exposure to ARs (primarily second generation ARs; SGARs) in raptors and avian scavengers has triggered considerable conservation concern over their potential effects on populations. To identify risk to extant raptor and avian scavenger populations in Oregon and potential future risk to the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) flock recently established in northern California, we

Lyme disease: additional evidence of widespread distribution. Recognition of a tick-borne dermatitis-encephalitis-arthritis syndrome in an area of known ixodes tick distribution.

Lyme disease is a process of unknown etiology that has been linked to bites of ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex. Central Minnesota is an area of known Ixodes dammini distribution. This case represents the first recognition of Lyme disease from this area. This case presented as a fluctuating meningoencephalitis with superimposed cranial neuropathy. The characteristic skin lesion, erythema chronicum migrans, was recognized by history, and oligoarticular arthritis subsequently developed. Physicians practicing in areas of known Ixodes tick distribution outside of the northeastern United States

Geographic correlation of schizophrenia to ticks and tick-borne encephalitis.

Schizophrenia prevalence in the United States is highest in urbanized Northeastern, Northwestern, and Great Lakes States. The viral theory of schizophrenia attributes this distribution to enhanced susceptibility to viral infections in crowded, urban areas. Such infections during fetal or perinatal development are hypothesized to result in the eventual onset of schizophrenia. This study attempts to identify which viral infections have a similar geographical distribution to schizophrenia. Examination of the geographical distribution of infectious diseases in the United States reveals that the sp

Emerging Fungal Infections in the Pacific Northwest: The Unrecognized Burden and Geographic Range of Cryptococcus gattii and Coccidioides immitis.

Both Cryptococcus gattii and Coccidioides can cause debilitating diseases if not identified early. It is imperative that clinicians recognize these diseases and begin treatment quickly when necessary. In order to have these two mycoses in their differential diagnosis, clinicians, microbiologists, and public health officials must be aware of the expanding geographic boundary in the case of Coccidioides immitis and the new emergence in the case of C. gattii. Accordingly, there is now mandatory reporting for cases of C. gattii and C. immitis in both Washington and Oregon, and the Centers for Dise

Short communication: Snapshot of industry milk hauling practices in the western United States.

The Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO) mandates milk hauling sanitation and operational practices; however, the use of vague language (i.e., "as needed") and gaps in processes lead to variability in industry practices. Our aim was to characterize industry milk hauling practices and identify areas that may be an unexplained source of contamination in the dairy processing continuum, and communicate this information with industry to cultivate best practices. The objectives of this study were to (1) survey industry hauling sanitation and operation practices in the Pacific Northwest region of the Uni

Wildfire exposure analysis on the national forests in the Pacific Northwest, USA.

We analyzed wildfire exposure for key social and ecological features on the national forests in Oregon and Washington. The forests contain numerous urban interfaces, old growth forests, recreational sites, and habitat for rare and endangered species. Many of these resources are threatened by wildfire, especially in the east Cascade Mountains fire-prone forests. The study illustrates the application of wildfire simulation for risk assessment where the major threat is from large and rare naturally ignited fires, versus many previous studies that have focused on risk driven by frequent and small

Molecular epizootiology of rabies associated with terrestrial carnivores in Mexico.

Epizootiological patterns of rabies are described, using antigenic and genetic analysis of samples obtained from infected domestic and wild mammals in 20 Mexican states during 1976-2002. Two independent origins are suggested for rabies in Mexican carnivores. One group shares ancestry with canine rabies, while the other group appears to share a common origin with bat rabies in North America. More than 12 sublineages were found in rabid dog populations, suggesting at least six major spatio-temporal foci. Coyote rabies was found as independent enzootic foci that probably emerged via spillover fro

The checkerboard area health system: delivering comprehensive care in a remote region of New Mexico.

A comprehensive health center is defined as the synergistic coupling of a medical and administrative structure designed to provide inpatient, outpatient, and public health services. While health centers have been widely established in other countries, only limited implementation has occurred in rural areas of the United States. The successful implementation of the health center concept in a sparsely populated area of northwestern New Mexico, which is predominately inhabited by Navajo Indians and Spanish Americans, is descriptively analyzed. The physical environment and the socioeconomic charac

On the Emergence of Cryptococcus gattii in the Pacific Northwest: Ballast Tanks, Tsunamis, and Black Swans.

The appearance of Cryptococcus gattii in the North American Pacific Northwest (PNW) in 1999 was an unexpected and is still an unexplained event. Recent phylogenomic analyses strongly suggest that this pathogenic fungus arrived in the PNW approximately 7 to 9 decades ago. In this paper, we theorize that the ancestors of the PNW C. gattii clones arrived in the area by shipborne transport, possibly in contaminated ballast, and established themselves in coastal waters early in the 20th century. In 1964, a tsunami flooded local coastal regions, transporting C. gattii to land. The occurrence of cryp

Disseminated Coccidioidomycosis Presenting as Carcinomatosis Peritonei and Intestinal Coccidioidomycosis in a Patient with HIV.

Coccidioidomycosis (CM) is a fungal infection endemic in southwestern regions of the United States, northwestern regions of Mexico, and some areas of Brazil and Argentina. Clinical presentation varies depending on the extent of the infection and the immune status of the host. The most common presentation ranges from flu-like symptoms to self-limiting pneumonia. Extrapulmonary presentations are uncommon and may involve the meninges, skin, and bone. Gastrointestinal and peritoneal involvement is extremely rare. Here we report a case of disseminated CM presenting as carcinomatosis peritonei as an

Ecological niche of the 2003 west nile virus epidemic in the northern great plains of the United States.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of West Nile virus (WNv) has remained high in the northern Great Plains compared to the rest of the United States. However, the reasons for the sustained high risk of WNv transmission in this region have not been determined. To assess the environmental drivers of WNv in the northern Great Plains, we analyzed the county-level spatial pattern of human cases during the 2003 epidemic across a seven-state region. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: County-level data on WNv cases were examined using spatial cluster analysis, and were used to fit statistical models with weather
