Biological dosimetry dose-response curves for residents living near nuclear power plants in South Korea.

The purpose of this study was to establish the dose-response curves for biological dosimetry of the Dong Nam Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences to monitor radiation exposure of local residents in the vicinity of the nuclear power plant. The blood samples of five healthy volunteers were irradiated with gamma ray, and each sample was divided equally for analysis of chromosomal aberrations by Giemsa staining and three-color fluorescence in situ hybridization painting of the triplet (chromosomes #1, #2, and #4). The results of chromosomal aberrations followed the Poisson distribution i

Proximity to nuclear power plants and total mortality risk in the USA during 2000-2018.

Nuclear power plants (NPPs) are a major source of electricity in the United States, yet concerns persist regarding potential health effects of chronic low-level radiation exposure among nearby populations. Evidence on population-level mortality impacts remains limited. To evaluate the association between long-term exposure to NPPs and all-cause mortality across U.S. counties from 2000 to 2018. A proximity-based exposure was calculated as the sum of inverse distances from each county's population centroid to all active nuclear power plants within 200 km for each year and averaged over a 20-year

From Devastation to Recovery and Revival in the Aftermath of Fukushima's Nuclear Power Plants Accident.

Japan's earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in March 2011 forced the evacuation of 185 000 residents. Psychological and social impacts exacerbated by long-term evacuation and widespread rumors have influenced residents' physical and mental health, despite the fact that no direct fatalities occurred from radiation exposure. However, during the 5 years following the accident, steady recovery in industrial and economic activity has lessened previously widespread, deeply rooted stigma and self-stigma among a significant number of affected victims. More than 2

Cancer incidence in the vicinity of nuclear power plants in Taiwan: a population-based study.

Numerous antinuclear demonstrations reveal that the public is anxious about the potential health effects caused by nuclear power plants. The purpose of this study is to address the question "Is there a higher cancer incidence rate in the vicinity of nuclear power plants in Taiwan?" The Taiwan Cancer Registry database from 1979 to 2003 was used to compare the standardized incidence rate of the top four cancers with strong evidence for radiation risks between the "plant-vicinity" with those "non-plant-vicinity" groups. All cancer sites, five-leading cancers in Taiwan, and gender-specific cancers

Cancer incidence in the vicinity of Finnish nuclear power plants: an emphasis on childhood leukemia.

The objective of this paper was to study cancer incidence, especially leukemia in children (<15 years), in the vicinity of Finnish nuclear power plants (NPPs). We used three different approaches: ecological analysis at municipality level, residential cohorts defined from census data, and case-control analysis with individual residential histories. The standardized incidence ratio of childhood leukemia for the seven municipalities in the vicinity of NPPs was 1.0 (95% CI 0.6, 1.6) compared to the rest of Finland. The two cohorts defined by censuses of 1980 and 1990 gave rate ratios of 1.0 (95% C

Monitoring chlorine residual and trihalomethanes in the chlorinated seawater effluent of a nuclear power plant.

Periodic sampling of the discharged seawater effluent from Madras Atomic Power Station (Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, India) was carried out during 2013-2017 to assess the residual chlorine and trihalomethanes content in the outfall discharge water. The variations in dissolved oxygen, temperature, and pH were correlated with the residual chlorine and trihalomethanes content in the discharged effluent. The difference in temperature (ΔT) between influent and effluent seawater samples ranged from 1.95 to 11.0 °C (6.47 ± 1.87). More than 95% of the ΔT values were within the guideline value of 7 °C. Micronucleus frequency is increased in peripheral blood lymphocytes of nuclear power plant workers.

Nuclear power plant workers are exposed to ionizing radiation at relatively low doses and for prolonged periods of time. To investigate the extent of genetic damage in these workers, a group of 133 nuclear power plant workers and 39 healthy controls were compared using the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay. The frequency of micronuclei was significantly increased in peripheral lymphocytes of nuclear power plant workers (20.5 +/- 9.7% compared to 13.7 +/- 5.9%). A significant dose-response relationship was observed between micronucleus (MN) frequency and both the accumulated dose and the dur

Soil and Indoor Radionuclides Related to the Plymouth Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant Area.

Given the importance of internal dosimetry from inhaled or ingested radioactive particles attributable to nuclear fuels and fission, in this study we analyzed samples collected from indoor home dusts and surface soils in areas surrounding and up to 13 km from the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP) in Plymouth, Massachusetts (USA). Indoor dust (n=15) from homes (n=10) and outdoor soil samples (n=31, yielding a total of n=46 original samples) were analyzed by γ-spectrometry, and α- and β-rate counting. Sixteen aliquots (16) from the 46 samples were analyzed by α-spectrometry for varying combinat

Stable and unstable chromosomal aberrations among Finnish nuclear power plant workers.

Twenty nuclear power plant workers with relatively high recorded cumulative doses were studied using FISH chromosome painting and dicentric analysis after solid Giemsa staining. The results indicated that chronic exposure to ionising radiation can be detected on the group level using translocation analysis after chromosome painting, although the mean cumulative dose was approximately 100 mSv. A significant association between translocation frequency and cumulative dose was observed. Variability in the translocation yields among workers with similar recorded doses was large, resulting in a poor

Impact of long-term operation of nuclear power plants on the marine ecosystem of Daya Bay.

Based on the monitoring data of Daya Bay in 2011-2017, the impact of long-term operation of nuclear power plants (NPPs) on the marine ecosystem was accessed. 137Cs and 90Sr in seawater and sediment of Daya Bay decreased with time. The environmental half-lives of 137Cs and 90Sr in seawater, 137Cs in sediment were 7.1 a, 11.7 a and 13.9 a, respectively. The total dose rates of the marine organisms ranged from 230.5 to 853.9 nGy/h, lower than the ERICA screening benchmark (10 μGy/h). 210Po, 226Ra and 232Th were the main dose contributors. 137Cs and 90Sr contributed to ~0.01 %-~0.06 % of the total

Accident Simulation Study for Nuclear Power Plants Impacting Louisiana: Differences in 2017 vs. 1992 Protective Action Guidelines.

Louisiana has aligned its radiological emergency program with the 2017 US Environmental Protection Agency Protective Action Guides Manual but has added a child thyroid dose evacuation threshold in lieu of distributing potassium iodide to the public. The nuclear power plants will continue to align with the 1992 manual for the foreseeable future, which could lead to possible accident scenarios in which state recommendations would differ from those of the utility. The objective of this study is to predict what accident and weather conditions will lead to a differing set of recommendations. This s

RESEARCH OF HEMATOLOGICAL CHANGES IN INDIVIDUALS EXPOSED TO IRRADIATION FROM THE CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR POWER PLANT.

The impact of pathogenic factors caused by the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster on the blood system and hemostasis is of great interest. Deviations identified in the first years after exposure to ionizing radiation are primarily restorative and adaptive in nature. This paper presents the results of the monitoring of the changes in each separately studied indicator in the early (1987-1988) and late (2019-2020) periods after the exposure to radiation. Regression equations were obtained that describe the dynamics of changes in certain blood indicators, which make it possible to predict chan

Health issues today in affected areas near Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Due to vigorous efforts to decontaminate the environment following the accident at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the size of the difficult-to-return zone has reduced significantly and people have started returning to their homes. As the population has increased, medical needs have ensued. A marked increase in traffic as well as decontamination and reconstruction projects has led to an increase in the number of road traffic and occupational accidents. Acceleration of population aging has resulted in an increased number of elderly residents with multiple medical problems. Uncontrolled/u

Spatiotemporal patterns of phytoplankton communities in coastal waters near the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant.

Coastal nuclear power plants are expanding rapidly, yet their ecological effects on phytoplankton in open coastal waters remain difficult to distinguish from strong seasonal background variability. We combined pre-operation surveys in 2015-2016 with monthly post-operation monitoring in 2019 around the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant in the northern South China Sea. Reference-based difference-in-differences (DiD) models and continuous-distance analyses provided little evidence for persistent near-field post-operation divergence. Instead, cross-period changes were mainly characterised by broader env

The effect of exposure on cattle thyroid after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident.

Nuclear plant accidents can be a risk for thyroid cancer due to iodine radioisotopes. Near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, cattle were exposed to radiation after the accident occurred in May 2011. Here we estimated the total radiation exposure to cattle thyroid and its effects on thyroid function. Until October 2016, the estimated external exposure dose in Farm A was 1416 mGy, while internal exposure dose of 131I, 134Cs, and 137Cs were 85, 8.8, and 9.7 mGy in Farm A and 34, 0.2, and 0.3 mGy in Farm B, respectively. The exposed cattle had thyroid with relatively lower weight and lowe
