Suicide Among Inuit: Results From a Large, Epidemiologically Representative Follow-Back Study in Nunavut.

OBJECTIVE: The Inuit population in Canada's North has suffered from high rates of death by suicide. We report on the first large-scale, controlled, epidemiologically representative study of deaths by suicide in an Indigenous population, which investigates risk factors for suicide among all Inuit across Nunavut who died by suicide during a 4-year period. METHODS: We identified all suicides by Inuit (n = 120) that occurred between January 1, 2003, and December 31, 2006, in Nunavut. For each subject, we selected a community-matched control subject. We used proxy-based procedures and conducted st

Postoperative outcomes for Nunavut Inuit at a Canadian quaternary care centre: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Structural aspects of health care systems, such as limited access to specialized surgical and perioperative care, can negatively affect the outcomes and resource use of patients undergoing elective and emergency surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to compare postoperative outcomes of Nunavut Inuit and non-Inuit patients at a Canadian quaternary care centre. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving adult (age ≥ 18 yr) patients undergoing inpatient surgery from 2011 to 2018 at The Ottawa Hospital, the quaternary referral hospital for the Qikiqtaaluk Re

Prevalence and genetic characterization of Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. in dogs in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada.

There are few epidemiologic studies on the role of dogs in zoonotic parasitic transmission in the Circumpolar North. The objectives of this study were to: (a) estimate the faecal prevalence of Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. in dogs; (b) investigate potential associations between the type of dog population and the faecal presence of Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp.; and (c) describe the molecular characteristics of Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. in dogs in Iqaluit, Nunavut. We conducted two cross-sectional studies in July and September 2016. In July, the team collected daily

Wastewater treatment and public health in Nunavut: a microbial risk assessment framework for the Canadian Arctic.

Wastewater management in Canadian Arctic communities is influenced by several geographical factors including climate, remoteness, population size, and local food-harvesting practices. Most communities use trucked collection services and basic treatment systems, which are capable of only low-level pathogen removal. These systems are typically reliant solely on natural environmental processes for treatment and make use of existing lagoons, wetlands, and bays. They are operated in a manner such that partially treated wastewater still containing potentially hazardous microorganisms is released int

Unikkaartuit: meanings of well-being, unhappiness, health, and community change among Inuit in Nunavut, Canada.

Suicide among young Inuit in the Canadian Arctic is at an epidemic level. In order to understand the distress and well-being experienced in Inuit communities, a first step in understanding collective suicide, this qualitative study was designed. Fifty Inuit were interviewed in two Inuit communities in Nunavut, Canada, and questionnaires asking the same questions were given to 66 high school and college students. The areas of life investigated here were happiness and wellbeing, unhappiness, healing, and community and personal change. Three themes emerged as central to well-being: the family, ta

Revealing the northern distribution of Trichinella chanchalensis: New geographic records from Nunavut and ecological perspectives.

Trichinella is a genus of foodborne nematode parasites that comprises 13 taxa. In northern Canada three taxa, T. nativa, T6, and the recently discovered T. chanchalensis, are commonly found in wild carnivores. These parasites are of public health concern, particularly in northern Canada, where human infection rates are markedly higher. Our first objective was to determine whether T. chanchalensis, reported in Alaska, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories (NT), is present in wolverines from Nunavut. Our second objective was to determine the prevalence of co-infections and competition among Trich

Early life nutrition in Nunavut, Canada: a retrospective descriptive study of food security, vitamin D and rickets.

Northern regions of Canada have the highest reported incidence of childhood rickets in the country, yet this public health problem remains poorly described. The goal of this research was to explore the food and vitamin D supplementation experiences in pregnancy and infancy and examine associations with rickets diagnosis. Data were collected systematically through a retrospective chart review of Inuit children from 18 communities in Nunavut born from 2010-2013. Although most pregnant people reported consuming country food daily or weekly, one in three pregnant people reported being food insecur

Screening-level microbial risk assessment of acute gastrointestinal illness attributable to wastewater treatment systems in Nunavut, Canada.

Most arctic communities use primary wastewater treatment systems that are capable of only low levels of pathogen removal. Effluent potentially containing fecally derived microorganisms is released into wetlands and marine waters that may simultaneously serve as recreation or food harvesting locations for local populations. The purpose of this study is to provide the first estimates of acute gastrointestinal illness (AGI) attributable to wastewater treatment systems in Arctic Canada. A screening-level, point estimate quantitative microbial risk assessment model was developed to evaluate worst-c

The synergy of therapeutic vaccination and timely diagnosis for TB control in high-burden settings: Nunavut as a case study.

BACKGROUND: Although the overall prevalence of Tuberculosis (TB) in Canada is relatively low, Indigenous communities are disproportionately burdened, with active TB rates exceeding those of Canadian-born non-Indigenous populations by more than 55-fold. In response, the Government of Canada and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami have launched an initiative to eliminate TB among Inuit by 2030. We evaluated strategies underpinning this initiative, including the potential use of therapeutic TB vaccines that are currently undergoing clinical trials. METHODS: We developed an agent-based model of TB transmissi

Planning and implementation of a community-wide tuberculosis screening intervention: a case study from Naujaat, Nunavut, Canada.

In Nunavut, public health management of tuberculosis (TB) remains a challenge due to social and economic inequities, geographic isolation, TB-related stigma, and distrust in healthcare linked to a history of colonialism. A TB outbreak was declared in Naujaat, Nunavut following an increase in reported cases starting in January 2023. In response to this outbreak, the Naujaat community-wide TB screening (CWS) clinic was held from April 15th to May 29th, 2024, with support from the Nunavut Tunavik Incorporated (NTI) leadership and community engagement teams. This article outlines the steps taken i

Hopping species and borders: detection of Bartonella spp. in avian nest fleas and arctic foxes from Nunavut, Canada.

BACKGROUND: In a warmer and more globally connected Arctic, vector-borne pathogens of zoonotic importance may be increasing in prevalence in native wildlife. Recently, Bartonella henselae, the causative agent of cat scratch fever, was detected in blood collected from arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) that were captured and released in the large goose colony at Karrak Lake, Nunavut, Canada. This bacterium is generally associated with cats and cat fleas, which are absent from Arctic ecosystems. Arctic foxes in this region feed extensively on migratory geese, their eggs, and their goslings. Thus, we

"The trauma experienced by generations past having an effect in their descendants": narrative and historical trauma among Inuit in Nunavut, Canada.

"Sivulirijat aksururnaqtukkuurnikugijangat aktuiniqaqsimaninga kinguvaanginnut" translates as "the trauma experienced by generations past having an effect in their descendants." The legacy of the history of colonialism is starting to take narrative shape as Inuit give voice to the past and its manifestations in the present through public commissions such as the federal Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Inuit-led Qikiqtani Truth Commission. However, an examination of other discursive contexts reveals a collective narrative of the colonial past that is at times silent, incomplete or se

Description of the larva of Ceratophyllus vagabundus vagabundus (Siphonaptera:Ceratophyllidae) from nests of Ross's and lesser snow geese in Nunavut, Canada.

Adults of the flea, Ceratophyllus vagabundus vagabundus , were present in the hundreds in nests of Ross's (Chen rossii) and lesser snow (Chen caerulescens caerulescens) geese in the Arctic goose colony at Karrak Lake, Nunavut, Canada. Ceratophyllus v. vagabundus had not been previously recorded in association with Ross's or snow geese. Large numbers of C. v. vagabundus adults and larvae were collected and a description of the larva is provided for the first time. On the basis of external characters, larvae were indistinguishable from those of a number of other Ceratophyllus spp. previously des

Non-essential trace elements, methylmercury, and organic contaminants in hunted ringed seals (Pusa hispida) from Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada.

Ringed seals (Pusa hispida) are a key food resource for Inuit communities in Nunavut, Canada, thus justifying the need for regular monitoring of environmental contaminants in these animals. The primary objective of this study was to determine the current levels of some non-essential trace elements, including cadmium (Cd), total mercury (THg), and methylmercury (MeHg), and of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in ringed seals of eastern Nunavut. Selenium (Se), an essential trace element, was also included because of its strong interaction with Hg. From 2

Temperature and the sulfur cycle control monomethylmercury cycling in high Arctic coastal marine sediments from Allen Bay, Nunavut, Canada.

Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is a neurotoxin of concern in the Canadian Arctic due to its tendency to bioaccumulate and the importance of fish and wildlife in the Inuit diet. In lakes and wetlands, microbial sediment communities are integral to the cycling of MMHg; however, the role of Arctic marine sediments is poorly understood. With projected warming, the effect of temperature on the production and degradation of MMHg in Arctic environments also remains unclear. We examined MMHg dynamics across a temperature gradient (4, 12, 24 °C) in marine sediments collected in Allen Bay, Nunavut. Slurries w
