Dietary Patterns and Retinal Vessel Caliber in the Irish Nun Eye Study.

BACKGROUND: Retinal vessel abnormalities are associated with cardiovascular disease risk. Widening of retinal venules is associated with increased risk of stroke while narrowing of retinal arterioles independently predicts incident hypertension, coronary heart disease and diabetes. Dietary factors are known to play an important role in cardiovascular health. However, few studies have examined the association between dietary patterns (DPs) and retinal microvascular health. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between 'a posteriori'-derived DPs and retinal vascular caliber (RVC) in older women

Cytomegalovirus infection: a seroepidemiologic comparison of nuns and women from a venereal disease clinic.

A seroepidemiologic study of prevalence of antibody to cytomegalovirus (CMV) was simultaneously done in four populations: group I, nuns working as nurses or school teachers; group II, women admitted to a upper socioeconomic private hospital; group III, women admitted to a lower socioeconomic county hospital, and group and IV women attending a veneral disease clinic. Groups II, III and IV, were not statistically different and showed an abrupt rise in antibody prevalence during your adulthood. Group I, however, did not show the expected abrupt rise in antibody prevalence during young adulthood,

TDP-43 Neuropathologic Associations in the Nun Study and the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study.

Transactive response binding protein-43 (TDP-43) cytoplasmic neuronal and glial aggregates (pathologic TDP-43) have been described in multiple brain diseases. We describe the associations between neuropathologically confirmed TDP-43 and cognition in two population-based cohorts: the Nun Study (NS) and the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study (HAAS). In the HAAS, there was a significant association between hippocampal sclerosis (HS) and TDP-43 (OR = 11.04, p < 0.0001, 95% CI 3.57-34.13). In the NS, there were significant associations between TDP-43 and HS (OR = 16.44, p > 0.001 95%, CI 7.10-38.00) and Alz

Blood folate is associated with asymptomatic or partially symptomatic Alzheimer's disease in the Nun study.

Asymptomatic and partially symptomatic Alzheimer's disease (APSYMAD) are a series of cognitive states wherein subjects have substantial Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology (classification B or C by the Consortium to Establish a Registry for AD criteria), but have normal or only partially impaired cognitive function; all of these subjects are non-demented. These cognitive states may arise from the prevention or delay of clinical symptom expression by exposure to certain nutritional factors. This study examined blood levels of folate and antioxidants (i.e., carotenoids) in relation to APSYMAD, ne

Primary Cutaneous Coccidioidomycosis in an Italian Nun Working in South America and Review of Published Literature.

Coccidioidomycosis is a systemic disease caused by the dimorphic fungus Coccidioides, endemic in parts of the Southwestern USA and Central and South America. Two species, Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii, were differentiated. Primary cutaneous coccidioidomycosis (PCC) has been reported rarely. An unusual case of PCC characterized by a persistent solitary lesion diagnosed in Italy in an immunocompetent Italian nun living in Argentina is described. The isolate was identified by sequence analysis as C. posadasii. Antibody screening was negative. A total of 39 cases of PCC have been

The Nun study: clinically silent AD, neuronal hypertrophy, and linguistic skills in early life.

BACKGROUND: It is common to find substantial Alzheimer disease (AD) lesions, i.e., neuritic beta-amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, in the autopsied brains of elderly subjects with normal cognition assessed shortly before death. We have termed this status asymptomatic AD (ASYMAD). We assessed the morphologic substrate of ASYMAD compared to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in subjects from the Nun Study. In addition, possible correlations between linguistic abilities in early life and the presence of AD pathology with and without clinical manifestations in late life were considered. M

Evaluation of the Retinal Vasculature in Hypertension and Chronic Kidney Disease in an Elderly Population of Irish Nuns.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hypertension are global public health problems associated with considerable morbidity, premature mortality and attendant healthcare costs. Previous studies have highlighted that non-invasive examination of the retinal microcirculation can detect microvascular pathology that is associated with systemic disorders of the circulatory system such as hypertension. We examined the associations between retinal vessel caliber (RVC) and fractal dimension (DF), with both hypertension and CKD in elderly Irish nuns. METHODS: Data from 1233 participants in the c

Age and blood pressure changes. A 20-year follow-up study in nuns in a secluded order.

In a prospective study, 144 white nuns belonging to a secluded monastic order and 138 white control laywomen were followed for 20 years to investigate whether living for a long time in a stress-free environment influences the effect of aging on blood pressure. Silence, meditation, and isolation from society are the distinctive features of the life-style examined. At study entry, blood pressure was not dissimilar in the nuns and the control group, but it increased over time only in the controls, with a mean slope of the regression line (beta coefficient) of 0.089 in the nuns (NS) and 2.171 in t

Interrelations of Leptin and Interleukin-6 in Vitamin D Deficient and Overweight Orthodox Nuns from Northern Greece: A Pilot Study.

Background/Objectives: Athonian fasting, a rigorous form of intermittent fasting practiced by Christian Orthodox nuns and a subset of the Mediterranean diet, has known health benefits, but its impact on the interplay of adipokines, inflammatory cytokines, and vitamin D status remains under-investigated. This study aimed to elucidate these relationships within this controlled dietary context. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined the interplay of leptin, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and vitamin D in 41 overweight, vitamin D-sufficient Christian Orthodox nuns practicing Athonian fasting. Tau pathology in the brainstem monoaminergic neurons reflect resilience to Alzheimer's disease pathology in the Nun study cases.

The presence of amyloid and tau pathologies is the pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the presence of non-demented individuals with sufficient AD pathology indicates that AD-linked pathology does not always lead to dementia. The current view is that a non-demented (ND) individual with sufficient AD pathology represents an individual resilient to AD pathology. To gain insight about resilience to AD pathology, we examined the neuropathology in the brainstem monoaminergic (MAergic) neurons in the Nun Study participants with equally high Braak AD stage (V-VI) with dementia

Early life linguistic ability, late life cognitive function, and neuropathology: findings from the Nun Study.

The relationships between early life variables, cognitive function, and neuropathology were examined in participants in the Nun Study who were between the ages of 75 and 95. Our early life variable was idea density, which is a measure of linguistic ability, derived from autobiographies written at a mean age of 22 years. Six discrete categories of cognitive function, including mild cognitive impairments, were evaluated, using the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) battery of cognitive tests. Neuropathologic data included Braak staging, neurofibrillary tangle and

The use of convent archival records in medical research: the School Sisters of Notre Dame archives and the nun study.

The School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) archives program in a cooperative system for the arrangement and preservation of the records of the SSND provinces in North America, including records of individual sisters. Archival records include autobiographies, school and college transcripts, employment histories, and family socioeconomic data. The Nun Study, a longitudinal study of Alzheimer's disease and aging in 678 SSND sisters, compares data extracted from these records with data on late-life cognitive and physical function and postmortem brain neuropathology to explore early life factor that m

Linguistic ability in early life and the neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease and cerebrovascular disease. Findings from the Nun Study.

Findings from the Nun Study indicate that low linguistic ability in early life has a strong association with dementia and premature death in late life. In the present study, we investigated the relationship of linguistic ability in early life to the neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease and cerebrovascular disease. The analyses were done on a subset of 74 participants in the Nun Study for whom we had handwritten autobiographies completed some time between the ages of 19 and 37 (mean = 23 years). An average of 62 years after writing the autobiographies, when the participants were 78 to 97 years

Linguistic ability in early life and cognitive function and Alzheimer's disease in late life. Findings from the Nun Study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if linguistic ability in early life is associated with cognitive function and Alzheimer's disease in late life. DESIGN: Two measures of linguistic ability in early life, idea density and grammatical complexity, were derived from autobiographies written at a mean age of 22 years. Approximately 58 years later, the women who wrote these autobiographies participated in an assessment of cognitive function, and those who subsequently died were evaluated neuropathologically. SETTING: Convents in the United States participating in the Nun Study; primarily convents in the Milw

Predictors of Vitamin D Status in Religious and Intermittent Fasting: A Comparative Study in Orthodox Nuns and Women from the General Population.

Background: Vitamin D plays a key role in bone metabolism and immune regulation. Populations with restricted sun exposure or limited dietary intake are particularly vulnerable to vitamin D deficiency. Orthodox Christian nuns represent a unique group in this regard, due to traditional clothing, limited outdoor activity, and prolonged religious fasting. However, few studies have compared them with lay individuals following similar dietary practices. Objective: This study aimed to investigate predictors of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations in two female populations: Orthodox Chri

A computational linguistic measure of clustering behavior on semantic verbal fluency task predicts risk of future dementia in the nun study.

Generative semantic verbal fluency (SVF) tests show early and disproportionate decline relative to other abilities in individuals developing Alzheimer's disease. Optimal performance on SVF tests depends on the efficiency of using clustered organization of semantically related items and the ability to switch between clusters. Traditional approaches to clustering and switching have relied on manual determination of clusters. We evaluated a novel automated computational linguistic approach for quantifying clustering behavior. Our approach is based on Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) for computing s

Neuropathological findings processed by artificial neural networks (ANNs) can perfectly distinguish Alzheimer's patients from controls in the Nun Study.

BACKGROUND: Many reports have described that there are fewer differences in AD brain neuropathologic lesions between AD patients and control subjects aged 80 years and older, as compared with the considerable differences between younger persons with AD and controls. In fact some investigators have suggested that since neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) can be identified in the brains of non-demented elderly subjects they should be considered as a consequence of the aging process. At present, there are no universally accepted neuropathological criteria which can mathematically differentiate AD from
