Reported Incidents Involving Non-medical Care Workers and Nursery Teachers in Hospitals in Japan: An Analysis of the Japan Council for Quality Health Care Nationwide Database.

Objective With the shortage of medical staff, the birth rate decline, and aging populations in some countries, task shifting from specific medical staff to non-medical care workers in hospitals has been implemented as a short-term solution. Incident reporting reduces preventable patient errors, improves the quality of healthcare services, and contributes to patient safety. However, research focused on the expanding roles of non-medical staff who provide direct care for patients is lacking. The present study aimed to bridge this gap by examining reported incidents involving non-medical care wor

Neurodevelopmental and growth outcomes of extremely low birth weight infants who are transferred from neonatal intensive care units to level I or II nurseries.

OBJECTIVE: Transfer of clinically stable infants to level I and II nurseries alleviates demands on NICUs and allows better use of beds and resources. This study compared growth, neurodevelopmental impairments, postdischarge rehospitalization and deaths, and compliance for follow-up assessment at 18 to 22 months' corrected age of extremely low birth weight infants who transferred to level I and II nurseries with those who continued to receive care to discharge in a NICU. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Deve

Susceptibilities of bacteria to different antibiotic regimens. Study in two nursery populations.

Hospital nursery A has used chloramphenicol and nursery B has used the combination of penicillin G sodium and kanamycin sulfate routinely in the treatment of neonatal sepsis and other bacterial infections. A hypothesis was formulated that these different antibiotic pressures would select out a substantial number of populations of resistant bacteria in each of the two nurseries. This was tested by periodic sampling of the skin, mouth, and rectal flora of babies and the permanent personnel in these nurseries. These bacteria were studied for susceptibility to a number of antibiotics. The populati

Prevention and control of neonatal pyoderma with chlorhexidine.

The extent of staphylococcal colonisation and neonatal pyoderma was studied in 5 220 infants in two large Swedish hospitals in 1979-1982. A method for routine cord care with 4% chlorhexidine detergent solution was evaluated in one hospital. Nursery colonisation with Staph. aureus and streptococci decreased significantly. The method proved to be clinically efficient for prevention of pyoderma in the nursery as well as for controlling staphylococcal infection after discharge from hospital. The combined use of a quantitative sampling method and phage-typing showed that most post-discharge lesions

Congenital Cytomegalovirus Screening in Massachusetts Birth Hospitals: A Statewide Survey.

This study sought to assess the current state of screening for congenital cytomegalovirus infection in newborns among birth hospitals and newborn nurseries in the state of Massachusetts. A survey assessing hospital protocols for cytomegalovirus testing in newborns was distributed to all birth hospitals and newborn nurseries in Massachusetts from November 2020 to February 2021. 73.3% of hospitals responded to at least one survey question. Of these, fewer than half (48.5%) had any established approach for neonatal cytomegalovirus screening. Salivary polymerase chain reaction was the most common

Outbreaks of infectious intestinal disease in schools and nurseries in England and Wales 1992 to 1994.

We present data on outbreaks of infectious intestinal disease in schools and nurseries obtained from the surveillance scheme of all general outbreaks of infectious intestinal disease in England and Wales reported to the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre between 1992 and 1994. A minimum set of data was received for 1280 outbreaks, 95 of which (7%) arose in schools and nurseries. The commonest pathogens were salmonellas, Shigella sonnei, and small round structured viruses. The mode of transmission was described as mainly from person to person in 55 outbreaks and mainly foodborne in 3

Proactive approach to containment of enterovirus infection in the nursery.

Administration of prophylactic intravenous immunoglobulins to contacts of infants actively shedding enterovirus during a hospital nursery outbreak may attenuate severity of disease in those contacts and aid in containment of the outbreak. Four cases of neonatal enteroviral disease were treated in our hospital nursery in July and August 2011; 3 were presumed or proven vertical transmission cases and 1 was a presumed horizontal transmission. We aimed to prevent development of severe illness in contacts of affected neonates following a ministry of health advisory during the summer of 2011 warning

Antibiotic resistant staphylococci.

An antibiotic resistant staphylococcus with bacteriophage pattern 52/42B/80/81* is frequently responsible for infectious outbreaks in the newborn nursery. Some time after an outbreak had occurred in the University of California's hospital nursery, family members of the infants were found to be infected with this strain. Two families were studied in detail. In one of them, infection developed in six of the seven members within eight months after the infant's arrival. In the other, half of the family members had recurrent infections during a 13-month period.Infants who left the nursery as asympt

Clinical impact of transcutaneous bilirubinometry as an adjunctive screen for hyperbilirubinemia.

OBJECTIVE: To determine what the clinical impact would be of implementing a jaundice meter for use in a busy neonatal service as an adjunctive screening tool for hyperbilirubinemia. DESIGN AND METHODS: Test utilization data was collected for a 6-month period to determine how neonatal bilirubin was utilized in this hospital. The jaundice meter was evaluated in a study population of healthy term infants. The performance characteristics of the meter and the test utilization data were used to predict the clinical impact a meter could have on screening for hyperbilirubinemia. RESULTS: Utilization

Neonatal readmission within 2 weeks after birth.

To examine the causes of neonatal readmission within two weeks of discharge and identify the factors associated with neonatal readmission, newborns readmitted to Kaohsiung Municipal Hsiao-Kang (KMHK) Hospital within two weeks of discharge from our nursery between October 2001 and November 2003 were studied retrospectively. Of the 1099 deliveries during the study period, there were 63 newborns readmitted to KMHK Hospital within 14 days of discharge, with a rate of 5.7%. The control group consisted of a systematic sampling of newborns delivered over the same period that were not readmitted (n=74

Cost-Effectiveness of Nasal High Flow Versus CPAP for Newborn Infants in Special-Care Nurseries.

BACKGROUND: Treating respiratory distress in newborns is expensive. We compared the cost-effectiveness of 2 common noninvasive therapies, nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and nasal high-flow (nHF), for newborn infants cared for in nontertiary special care nurseries. METHODS: The economic evaluation was planned alongside a randomized control trial conducted in 9 Australian special care nurseries. Costs were considered from a hospital perspective until infants were 12 months of age. A total of 754 infants with respiratory distress, born ≥31 weeks' gestation and with birth weight
