BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a growing global public health issue, with increasing prevalence worldwide, including in China. The rise in obesity-related pediatric conditions requiring surgical intervention underscores the need to address this challenge in pediatric surgical care. However, research on this topic is limited. This study aimed to assess pediatric surgical nurses' knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and factors influencing their behavioral intentions.
METHODS: This is a dual-center, cross-sectional study. Nurses in direct clinical care roles at two medical institutions in China w

The acuity and number of children with life-threatening, life-limiting, and chronic conditions has increased dramatically over the past decade. The pediatric home care nurse needs a special body of knowledge and repertoire of tools to accurately assess, intervene, manage, evaluate, and provide resources to this most vulnerable population. Inherent in caring for these children is the need to support the family, nurturing the parents who care for chronically ill children at home.

Tachydysrhythmias in the neonatal and pediatric age group can present a challenge to pediatric nurses. A new antiarrhythmic drug, adenosine, has proven useful as an acute tool in the termination and diagnosis of these potentially life-threatening dysrhythmias.

This article provides the nurse practitioner with a concise and accurate reference for the evaluation of children with hematuria, proteinuria, and hypertension. Although the incidence of these disorders in children is lower than in adults, they are not uncommon. The nurse practitioner must be able to accurately assess the results of a urinalysis and measure and interpret blood pressure readings in children. A discussion of when to refer children with signs and symptoms of serious disease; and how to educate patients and families in order to promote children's health is also provided.

BACKGROUND: Nurses experience stress and suffering when they care for critically ill and dying patients. Moral distress occurs when nurses are unable to translate their moral choices into moral action. In response to this stress, nurses may experience burnout.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the attitudes and perceptions of the nurses who were ordered by the court to provide long-term care for Baby K, a female child with anencephaly.
METHOD: A questionnaire was developed to provide descriptive insight into the stress and distress the nurses experienced while caring for Baby K.
RESULTS: Nurses car

BACKGROUND: Excessive exposure to noise places nurses at risk for safety events, near-misses, decreased job performance, and fatigue. Noise is particularly a concern in pediatric intensive care units, where highly skilled providers and vulnerable patients require a quiet environment to promote healing.
OBJECTIVE: To measure noise levels and noise duration on specialty pediatric intensive care units to explore sources of noise and its effects on the health of registered nurses.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional pilot study, levels and sources of noise in 3 different specialty pediatric intensive

PROBLEM: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a concern for healthcare professionals including pediatric nurses. A lack of understanding of the prevalence rates and factors associated with work-related PTSD in pediatric nurses exists.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Articles published in peer-reviewed journals, written in English, focusing on pediatric registered nurses working in inpatient direct-care settings that answered the research questions: (1) describe the prevalence of PTSD in direct-care inpatient pediatric nurses (2) identify factors associated with work-related PTSD were included in th

PURPOSE: This study aims to explore the experiences of Iranian pediatric nurses (PNs) regarding moral outrage (MO).
DESIGN AND METHODS: This research utilized qualitative content analysis through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 14 pediatric nurses in a referral hospital from January to September 2023. The aim of this study was to deeply examine the experiences of proxy grief among nurses providing pediatric palliative care. This qualitative phenomenological study was conducted with 16 nurses working in the pediatric ward of a hospital located in the northern region of the country. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method. The analysis revealed 3 themes (challenges experienced while caring for children in palliative care; secondary trauma and coping processes; proxy trauma and professional resilience) and 9 sub-themes (emotional strain during care, establishing an

BACKGROUND: Although pain is considered a sign/symptom codified by ICD-10, it is not frequently found in the clinical reports of children who have suffered pain due to disease or interventions. It has a negative effect on their well-being, affecting different spheres of their life. Having questionnaires adapted and validated in different languages makes it possible to compare results between different centers and countries, as well as to adapt training to the deficits found in a given population.
AIM: To validate the Spanish version of Pediatric Nurses Knowledge and Attittudes Survey Regardin

Each year thousands of children are hospitalized for traumatic injuries associated with physical abuse. Nurses in the pediatric intensive care unit must be knowledgeable and skilled in caring for the physical, psychological, emotional, social, and developmental needs of such children and their families. This article provides direction for pediatric nurses working in the critical care setting. Specifically, it describes the nursing care of children in a pediatric intensive care unit where the mechanism of nonaccidental injury is blunt force to the head, abdomen, or musculoskeletal system, based

INTRODUCTION: Critical cardiopulmonary events arising from congenital or acquired heart diseases are infrequent in some pediatric critical care units but can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality when encountered. We developed four simulation cases for interprofessional pediatric critical care teams (fellows, residents, and nurses) to provide participants with high-acuity cardiopulmonary scenarios in safe learning environments. The included cases were coarctation of the aorta, Kawasaki disease, myocarditis, and tetralogy of Fallot.
METHODS: The simulations were typically 15 m

The discipline of pediatric nephrology addresses a wide range of conditions of varying severity. The most benign conditions include orthostatic proteinuria, and thin basement nephropathy. The most challenging diagnosis in the field is chronic renal failure, particularly if the patient is an infant. Nurses trained in pediatric nephrology provide care to this entire spectrum of patients within the context of their family. The varied responsibilities and specialized training of the pediatric nephrology nurse as described in this article can serve as a prototype for the independent role of clinica

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer is highly stressful and potentially traumatic for families. While trauma-informed care (TIC) aims to address these impacts, little is known about how pediatric oncology nurses understand and use TIC in practice.
METHOD: This study was conducted using a qualitative descriptive design to explore pediatric oncology nurses' perceptions of trauma and trauma-informed care. Fifteen nurses with at least 1 year of experience working in a pediatric oncology unit in a city hospital in Türkiye were recruited through purposive sampling. Data were collected between June and Jul

Patients with genetic disorders require specific types of cytogenetic testing for accurate diagnosis and prognosis followed by prompt treatment. This primer will serve as a guide for pediatric nurse practitioners on the use of various cytogenetic testing for the diagnosis of genetic disorders. Knowledge of the latest cytogenetic technologies will facilitate diagnosis and counseling related to genetic abnormalities such as inherited disorders, mental retardation, developmental delay, and autism. This reference will enable pediatric nurse practitioners to help identify patients with various inhe

The mortality rate of children with fulminant meningococcemia is high, and early recognition and intervention by the health care team is crucial for patient survival. Critical care nurses who have knowledge in the cause and treatment of this catastrophic disease and current trends in therapy will be able to provide essential care to these patients.
