Nursing assessment of injuries to the lower extremity.

When assessing injuries to the lower extremity, they can best be discussed if divided into two groups: (1) vehicular or crushing injuries; and (2) nonvehicular, torsion, or overuse injuries. Vehicular injuries require speedy, accurate assessment as they are often complex and frequently involve other systems. The patient is initially stabilized, then assessment of orthopedic problems is begun. The nurse's role is an assistive one. If the patient is admitted to the hospital, orthopedic care involves prevention of complications, reduction of pain, and assisting the patient in daily activities. No

Nursing assessment and diagnosis of respiratory distress in infants by children's nurses.

Many children's nurses have significant contact with children who have breathing difficulties and should be using systematic criteria to assess their nursing needs. Children's nurses do not appear to follow systematic criteria but are strongly influenced by the medical model and this may be detrimental to holistic assessment and the development of nursing diagnoses based on nursing needs. As nursing, along with other disciplines, develops evidence-based practice, children's nurses should develop evidence for best practice mindful of children's views, parental needs and the education of future

Evaluation of a metahuman-based interactive learning program for maternal nursing assessment in nursing students.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students in maternal care often have limited opportunities for real patient interactions, hindering the development of patient-centered communication, emotional empathy, and nursing assessment skills. Virtual human technologies provide a safe and immersive alternative for practicing these competencies. AIM: To evaluate the effects of a Metahuman-based virtual pregnant woman (VPW) education program on nursing students' communication competence, nursing assessment competence, patient encounter burden, learning engagement, educational satisfaction, and learning interest. Pressure ulcer PUSH score and traditional nursing assessment in nursing home residents: do they correlate?

BACKGROUND: Over a decade ago, the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP, 1997) recommended a new tool, the Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) tool to document ulcers and monitor the healing process. Yet, traditional nursing observation remains standard practice in chronic care, thus prompting this correlational study between PUSH and traditional documentation of pressure ulcers. METHODS: Data were cross-tabulated through a retrospective chart review of all residents with stage II-IV decubiti at a 672-bed skilled nursing facility, between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2006. A nursing assessment tool for adults with fecal incontinence.

Fecal incontinence affects slightly more than 1% of community-dwelling adults. This article describes an assessment format, with a research basis when available, that has been developed in a specialist nursing clinic in the United Kingdom. The focus is on how to obtain the most useful information from the patient to plan appropriate nursing interventions. A subsequent article will describe the biofeedback program developed as part of a package of care to meet individual needs of persons with fecal incontinence.

Assessment and nursing diagnosis in fluid and electrolyte disorders.

Disorders of fluid and electrolyte balance are common considerations in adult medical-surgical clients with underlying pathologic conditions. The assessment framework presented in an integrated approach is an attempt to provide the clinician with a nursing model to be used in gaining pertinent clinical information from clients with existing or suspected fluid and electrolyte disorders. The use of health patterns facilitates the collection and organization of information gained by the nurse through assessment. This framework assists the nurse in processing subjective and objective assessment da

The genetic family history assessment in gastroenterology nursing practice.

Genetic factors influence the risk for disease and the overall health of persons throughout their lifespan. The systematic collection of family history information in a three-generation format is the most important approach for the identification of individuals with a genetic susceptibility to most common diseases, and applying genetic concepts in healthcare. The detailed family history can play a critical role in diagnosis, lay the foundation for accurate risk assessment, and be used to develop subsequent education, individualized monitoring and management of the disease, and prevention measu

Nurses' Assessments Versus Patients' Self-Assessments of Postoperative Pain: Knowledge and Skills of Nurses for Effective Pain Management.

Postoperative pain is the most common form of acute pain. Nurses contribute to effective pain management with their knowledge and skills. The aims of this research were to examine differences between nurses' assessments and patients' self-assessments of postoperative pain, differences in the mentioned (self) assessments with respect to characteristics of both groups of respondents, and the correlation between the NRS and the VRS scale. The study included 103 nurses employed at a hospital and 103 patients treated in the surgical departments after the surgical procedures. Data were collected usi

Global Neuroscience Nurse Training Begins With a Baseline Assessment of Neuroscience Nursing Knowledge.

BACKGROUND: Before implementing an educational intervention, there is a need to establish baseline knowledge levels such that the outcome of said intervention can be fairly evaluated. Before developing a structured nursing educational intervention, we aimed to assess nursing knowledge, nursing confidence regarding that knowledge, and the accuracy of the knowledge. METHODS: We distributed a 50-item validated neurological assessment test (NAT) questionnaire to 70 nurses working at a teaching hospital in Kenya. There were no personal identifiers collected and the NAT was made available in both el

Readiness Assessment for AI in Nursing Care Projects: Multimethods Study.

BACKGROUND: Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) systems into nursing care often encounters obstacles stemming from unmet requirements and insufficient engagement with well-documented sociotechnical pitfalls. Readiness models offer a systematic way to evaluate project preparedness and to build the capabilities needed for successful artificial intelligence in nursing care (AINC) research, development, and implementation. As of yet, an evidence-based AI readiness assessment prioritizing AINC projects and accounting for their diversity in care settings is missing. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed

To assess the mental health of nurses and to find the post responsibility and psychological status of clinical nurses.A total of 447 nursing staff at different levels in a teaching hospital was assessed by nursing post responsibility scale and mental symptom checklist (SCL-90) then compared with each other. The study period was from April 1, 2018 to April 30, 2018.There was a positive correlation between the responsibility of post and interpersonal relationship (r = 0.11, P < .05), depression (r = 0.10, P < .05) and hostility (r = 0.10, P < .05). Nursing assessment and management of dyspneic patients with lung cancer.

Dyspnea is a subjective sensation of breathlessness. This distressing symptom is experienced by many patients with lung cancer and often is accompanied by physiologic signs and symptoms, such as tachypnea, tachycardia, pallor, and cyanosis. Dyspnea-induced hypoxia may occur and cause confusion, cognitive impairment, and restlessness. Prompt and accurate nursing assessment of dyspnea can assist in identifying appropriate treatment interventions. Supplemental oxygenation and medications, along with treatment of the underlying cause of the dyspnea, may promote patient comfort. Nurses need to be s
