On 14 June the National Blood Service (NBS) is hosting World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The need for blood is universal and many people know of someone who has required blood to save or improve her or his life. The nursing auxiliary service and the care of elderly patients.

Although nurse auxiliaries comprise a large and rapidly expanding part of the district nursing service, nursing research has largely neglected this group of nurses and the people they see. Using a patient-centred approach, which is a key element of the research, we studied the characteristics of patients who were either physically handicapped, frail elderly or elderly mentally infirm, who make up a large majority of the patients. We found that auxiliaries' patients fell into a typical 'at risk' group; they were older and more likely to be living alone than qualified nurses' patients, and yet t

Predicting nursing home placement among home- and community-based services program participants.

BACKGROUND: Several states offer publicly funded-care management programs to prevent long-term care placement of high-risk Medicaid beneficiaries. Understanding participant risk factors and services that may prevent long-term care placement can facilitate efficient allocation of program resources. OBJECTIVES: To develop a practical prediction model to identify participants in a home- and community-based services program who are at highest risk for long-term nursing home placement, and to examine participant-level and program-level predictors of nursing home placement. STUDY DESIGN: In a retr

Developing a nurse-led integrated 'red legs' service.

This project was developed to set up a nurse-led service based on the needs of patients diagnosed with 'red legs'. These patients are often wrongly admitted into hospital for treatment of cellulitis. Representatives from the specialties involved in caring for those individuals with red legs were invited to participate with patients to create a stakeholder group whose purpose was to develop integrated care pathways focused on referral criteria, diagnostics and treatment to inform a new nurse-led service. There was a commitment to utilising a number of facilitation techniques and practice-develo
