Nursing students' understanding and enactment of resilience: a grounded theory study.

AIM: The aim of this study was to explore nursing students' understanding and enactment of resilience. BACKGROUND: Stress is considered to be a major factor affecting the health, well-being and academic performance of nursing students. Resilience has been extensively researched as a process that allows individuals to successfully adapt to adversity and develop positive outcomes as a result. However, relatively little is known about the resilience of nursing students. DESIGN: A constructivist, grounded theory qualitative design was used for this study. METHOD: In-depth individual interviews

Research and theory for Nursing and Midwifery: Rethinking the Nature of Evidence.

BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE: The rise in the principles of evidence-based medicine in the 1990s heralded a re-emerging orthodoxy in research methodologies. The view of the randomised controlled trial (RCT) as a "gold standard" for evaluation of medical interventions has extended recently to evaluation of organisational forms and reforms and of change in complex systems-within health care and in other human services. Relatively little attention has been given to the epistemological assumptions underlying such a hierarchy of research evidence. AIMS AND METHODS: Case studies from research in matern

A theory-based nursing intervention to instill hope in homeless veterans.

This quasi-experimental study sought to determine if a specific nursing intervention to instill hope would positively influence levels of hope, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and depression in homeless veterans. Miller's Model of Patient Power Resources served as the conceptual framework from which a middle-range theory of homelessness-hopelessness was derived to guide the study. Homeless veterans completed pretests on admission to a Veterans Affairs Medical Center, were randomly assigned to treatment or waiting control group, and completed posttests at the end of 4 weeks. There was support for t

Theory-informed storytelling for leadership learning in undergraduate nursing education: A qualitative study of first-year nursing students.

BACKGROUND: Leadership is increasingly recognized as a core competency in nursing practice and education. However, leadership education is often introduced in the later stages of undergraduate nursing programs, leaving students uncertain about how leadership applies to clinical practice. Innovative pedagogical approaches are therefore needed to support early leadership development. Storytelling may provide opportunities for students to engage with authentic professional experiences, reflect on leadership behaviours, and connect leadership concepts with future nursing practice. OBJECTIVES: Thi

Stress coping theory-based nursing program enhances psychosocial adaptation in acute leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of acute leukemia (AL) patients face heavy physical and psychological burdens, yet few stress coping theory-based interventions address their positive experiences and coping needs. We aimed to explore the effects of a nursing intervention based on stress coping theory on primary caregivers of AL patients. METHODS: This is a non-randomized controlled trial. Participants were selected via convenience sampling. Eighty primary caregivers of AL patients hospitalized between October 2023 and December 2024 were enrolled and assigned to an intervention group (n = 40) and control

Nursing Diagnoses of the Homeless Population in Light of Self-care Theory.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of people find themselves in conditions of extreme poverty, which often makes living on the streets the only option. Living conditions in this setting exert a direct impact on health and self-care. Health care for the homeless population should be planned in an interdisciplinary and intersectoral manner. In this context, nursing diagnoses constitute an essential part of the systemization of care. OBJECTIVES: The aims of the present study were to identify nursing diagnoses of a homeless population and propose nursing interventions based on the findings in light of

Navigating through turbulence in the nursing talent pipeline: A constructivist grounded theory of academic success in polytechnic nursing education.

BACKGROUND: Academic success for nursing students has traditionally focused on metrics like grade point averages and exam performance but fails to reflect key abilities such as clinical reasoning, ethical decision-making, and the effective transfer of knowledge to practice. Additionally, there is a paucity of literature investigating academic success in undergraduate nursing education within polytechnic institutions, despite their growing role in nursing education. AIM: The objective of this study was to explore the processes and strategies undergraduate nursing students in Canadian polytechn

A Caregiver-Infant Interaction Framework to Guide Nursing Approaches to Supporting Early Relational Health: From Theory to Nursing Action.

Early Relational Health, as prioritized by the American Academy of Pediatrics, emphasizes relationships that are safe, stable, and nurturing. The mechanisms that cultivate or harm such relationships are moment-to-moment caregiver-infant interactions (eg, actions or behaviors between 2 partners), which are influenced by the larger socioecological environment. The concepts that explore caregiver-infant interaction are plentiful, but how these concepts relate to each other and to the emerging field of early relational health remains underexplored. This theory development paper responds to this ga

Foli's Theory of Psychological Trauma as a Framework For Nursing Research: A critique.

Nurses are regularly exposed to workplace traumatic events, including violence, aggression, witnessing patient deaths, and self-harming behavior and suicide attempts. These experiences can adversely affect nurse well-being and can interrelate with personal histories of trauma. Despite this, psychological trauma in nursing remains underexplored. Foli's mid-range theory of psychological trauma (2022) provides a contemporary framework for addressing this gap by identifying 7 types of psychological trauma in nursing practice while incorporating personal experiences beyond the clinical setting. Homeplace-Centered Nursing Homecare for Older Adult Migrants: A Situation-Specific Theory Derivation.

Older adult migrants often experience language barriers, cultural dissonance, fragmented continuity of care, and inequitable access to home health care. Existing nursing theories do not fully explain how migration, aging, cultural identity, relational care, and the meaning of home intersect in practice. Guided by Walker and Avant's theory derivation approach, this paper uses bell hooks' conceptualization of homeplace as the source conceptual domain and integrates nursing theories and empirical evidence to develop a situation-specific Homeplace-Centered Nursing Homecare Theory. The theory ident

Homelessness as culture: How transcultural nursing theory can assist caring for the homeless.

The concepts of culture and homelessness are both complex and contested. This paper examines homelessness through the lens of transcultural nursing theory, increasing understanding of both homelessness and transcultural theory. We argue that homelessness can be usefully conceptualised as a culture and that the application of transcultural theory to caring for homeless people will add further to the utility of these theories. The application of transcultural theory can add to the repertoire of skills the nurse needs to care for not only homeless clients, but, for a diverse range of client group

Evaluation of a Decision Mining Tool for Nursing Quality Improvement by Hospital Nurses: Theory-Guided Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) are widely implemented in hospitals, yet their uptake in nursing practice remains inconsistent. While electronic health records continuously capture nursing decision data, these data are rarely used to support structured quality improvement. Decision mining offers a novel approach by reconstructing and visualizing decision logic from clinical decision logs to support retrospective reflection and protocol evaluation rather than real-time alerting. Before such tools can be integrated into quality improvement programs, their acceptance by clin

Nurse Counseling Based on Planned Behavior Theory in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Recent advancements in the treatment of rheumatological diseases have been significant. However, patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) continue to struggle with symptom management. Given the critical role of nursing in providing personalized care, integrating theoretical frameworks can be highly beneficial. These frameworks allow nurses to effectively guide patients' health behaviors and improve their self-management skills. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of nursing counseling based on the Theory of Planned Behavior on pain, fatigue, and functional sta

Nurses' perspectives of an environment of optimum mental health: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: The Government's aspiration to make Kenya a middle-income country and achieve the United Nations' sustainable development goal 3, 'good health and well-being', are threatened by poor quality of mental health services. Environment and lack of a conceptual model of nursing to guide care were some of the reasons that were attributed to poor quality of mental health services. The purpose of the study was to discover and describe an appropriate conceptual model of mental health nursing practice. This paper describes the environment which is one of the metaparadigms of a conceptual model
