Clinical and experimental allergy : journal of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology1995eng
BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis against Anacardiaceae nuts is uncommon and the allergens involved still poorly characterized. For this reason two patients with allergy towards pistachio nut (a member of the Anacardiaceae family) have been studied.
OBJECTIVE: Identification of immunoallergens present in pistachio nut and analysis of crossreactive antigens in other members of the same plant family, specifically cashew and mango.
METHODS: Presence of specific IgE for pistachio and cashew nut and for mango seed and pulp was determined by skin tests and radioallergosorbent assay (RAST). The allergenic pr

AIM: Peanut and tree nut allergies are leading causes of food-induced anaphylaxis in children. We aimed to examine early introduction and allergic characteristics in children with suspected severe peanut and/or tree nut allergy.
METHODS: Children aged 3-16 years with suspected severe peanut and/or tree nut allergy were recruited from Tampere University Hospital, Finland. Eligibility was based on a history of anaphylaxis and/or elevated specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) to high-risk allergenic components. Data were collected through structured, physician-led interviews with participants and the

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that sometimes children fall asleep and can barely be woken up during allergic reactions on food ingestion. Nevertheless, to date, there is scarce data on narcolepsy-like sleepiness as a symptom of allergic reactions.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency of narcolepsy-like sleepiness during oral food challenges and characterize this symptom regarding comorbidities, eliciting allergens, and severity of reactions.
METHODS: Children with immediate-type allergic reactions during oral food challenges (89% were double-blind, placebo-controlled) have been analyze

BACKGROUND: The clinical features of food-allergic reactions in restaurants and other food establishments have not been studied. Of the registrants in the United States Peanut and Tree Nut Allergy Registry (PAR), 13.7% have reported reactions associated with such establishments.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the features of allergic reactions to peanut and tree nut in restaurant foods and foods purchased at other private establishments (eg, ice cream shops and bakeries).
METHODS: Telephone interviews were conducted through use of a structured questionnaire. Subjects/p

An anaphylactic reaction to cashew nut developed in a nonatopic 60-year-old man 25 days after receiving a liver allograft from a 15-year-old atopic boy who died of anaphylaxis after peanut ingestion. The liver recipient had no history of nut allergy. Posttransplantation skin prick test results were positive for peanut, cashew nut, and sesame seed, and the donor had allergen-specific IgE antibodies to the same 3 allergens. Contact tracing of the recipients of other solid organs from the same donor disclosed no other development of allergic symptoms after ingestion of peanut or cashew nut. Resul

BACKGROUND: The medical literature reports few cases of severe allergic reactions to coconut. We encountered a patient with anaphylaxis to coconut and oral symptoms to tree nuts.
OBJECTIVE: To identify cross-reactive antibodies between coconut and other tree nuts.
METHODS: We performed commercial radioallergosorbent tests to coconut and various tree nuts using the patient's serum. Skin prick testing was performed to fresh coconut and commercial extracts of coconut, almond, Brazil nut, cashew, pecan, walnut, and hazelnut. Proteins from fresh coconut, commercial coconut extract, and tree nuts

INTRODUCTION: Tree nut/peanut (TN/PN) allergies are among the most common pediatric food allergies, often persisting into later life and posing significant clinical risks. The likelihood of tolerance acquisition varies, and predictive factors remain inadequately defined in clinical practice. This study was conducted to evaluate clinical and laboratory features associated with anaphylaxis risk and tolerance development in pediatric patients with TN/PN allergy, while also examining the potential influence of aeroallergen sensitization, coexisting atopic diseases, and skin test reactivity on thes

BACKGROUND: Allergy to peanuts and tree nuts is a common cause of food allergy in Spain, with lipid transfer proteins (LTP) being the most frequently recognized panallergen. LTP sensitization often leads to multiple food group sensitivities, resulting in overly restrictive diets that hinder patient's quality of life. This study aimed to assess the tolerance of peanuts and tree nuts (hazelnuts and walnuts) in children sensitized to LTP, potentially mitigating the need for such diets.
METHODS: This prospective study enrolled individuals diagnosed with allergy to peanuts, hazelnuts, or walnuts.

The diagnosis of food allergy is often difficult to make by conventional means. Histories are frequently ambiguous, and skin testing is of dubious reliability because of the number of false-positive and false-negative reactions. We have evaluated the radioallergosorbent test (RAST) for the in vitro measurement of the specific IgE antibodies to nuts, including Brazil nut, almond, walnut, pecan, cashew, and the legume, peanut. Serums were obtained from 18 patients with a history of nut allergy and IgE level and specific IgE antibodies were measured. Thirteen of the 18 patients had significantly

There is a common perception that peanut/tree nut particles can be transmitted through aircraft ventilation systems and pose a significant risk to passengers with food allergies. In fact, food-induced allergic reactions are around 10-100 times less common during flights than 'on the ground', perhaps because of the multiple precautions food-allergic passengers take when flying. We review the evidence for strategies to help prevent accidental allergic reactions while travelling on commercial flights (review registered at PROSPERO, ref CRD42022384341). Research studies (including aircraft simulat

BACKGROUND: Allergic sensitisation towards cashew nut often happens without a clear history of eating cashew nut. IgE cross-reactivity between cashew and pistachio nut is well described; however, the ability of cashew nut-specific IgE to cross-react to common tree nut species and other Anacardiaceae, like mango, pink peppercorn, or sumac is largely unknown.
OBJECTIVES: Cashew nut allergic individuals may cross-react to foods that are phylogenetically related to cashew. We aimed to determine IgE cross-sensitisation and cross-reactivity profiles in cashew nut-sensitised subjects, towards botani

UNLABELLED: Hypersensitivity to poppy seeds is rare and it may develop due to immune (allergy) and non-immune reactions of fulminant course. Two cases of hypersensitivity to poppy seeds are presented: in a 21-year-old woman and 32-year-old man in whom life-threatening symptoms and signs of anaphylaxis (SSA) developed after consumption of poppy seeds in various situations, e.g in the street after consumption of a roll with poppy seeds or a cake prepared on a moulding board on which poppy seeds were previously squeezed. In the case of the woman, history data pointed to familial and individual oc

Tree nut allergies affect 1% of the United States population, are often severe in nature and rarely outgrown. Despite the severity and prevalence, there are no FDA-approved treatments for tree nut allergy. Development of a therapeutic would be expedited by having a mouse model that mimics the human disease. We utilized the CC027/GeniUnc mouse strain, which was previously identified as an orally reactive model of peanut allergy, to develop a model of walnut allergy. Mice were sensitized with walnut and cholera toxin for 4 weeks and subsequently challenged by oral gavage. Blood samples were coll

BACKGROUND: Oral immunotherapy (OIT) for food allergy has been largely studied in older children within the context of clinical trials, and its availability has historically been limited for younger patients with food allergy. Data have shown that the most impact may actually be seen with the use of OIT in younger infants and toddlers.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and feasibility of OIT in subjects 24 months and younger in a real-world setting using commercially available food products.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of subjects 24 months and younger initiated on OIT for peanut

BACKGROUND: Allergy to nuts is a common and well-known disease. Despite the fact that pine nut is a widely eaten food, only nine cases have been described in literature.
OBJECTIVE: To describe four paediatric patients suffering from allergy reaction on ingestion of pine nuts and compare them with cases described in literature, taking into account clinical symptoms, epidemiological and diagnostic methods.
METHODS: The immuno-allergic study was carried out with skin tests (prick tests) using a commercial and native extract, and specific IgE serum test. An oral provocation test was performed in

Food allergy represents a significant public health concern, with its prevalence increasing in recent decades. Tree nuts are among major allergenic foods, and allergies to them are frequently linked to severe and potentially life-threatening reactions. Data on the prevalence and natural history of tree nut allergy are limited. Primary nut allergy typically presents with rapid-onset IgE-mediated symptoms. Diagnosis can be confirmed by demonstrating a positive skin prick test (SPT), specific IgE (sIgE), or through an oral food challenge. Component-resolved diagnostics (CRD) can identify those wi

Background: Food allergy (FA) is an emerging problem in pediatrics, with tree nuts and peanuts being frequent causes of severe reactions. Oral food challenge (OFC) remains the gold standard for diagnosing FA. However, it is a stressful treatment and not always risk-free. Objectives: To identify potential biomarkers, using component-resolved diagnosis (CRD) associated with OFC outcome in children with tree nut (hazelnut, walnut, almond, and pistachio) and peanut allergy, who live in central and southern Italy. Methods: Eighty-eight (1-18 years) children followed at the Pediatric Allergy Clinic

BACKGROUND: In developing countries, there is a lack of epidemiological information related to food hypersensitivity, including nuts and seafood.
OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine the prevalence of allergic reactions and clinical manifestations associated with the consumption of nuts and seeds or seafood in university students.
METHODS: We designed an observational cross-sectional study. A structured questionnaire was applied to Mexican university students to identify allergic reactions associated with the consumption of nuts and seeds, and seafood.
RESULTS: A sample of 1,200 students was

AIM: The main aim of the study was to describe the differences between some Northern countries regarding what foods, according to the patients, elicit hypersensitivity symptoms.
METHODS: At the participating clinics, patients with a history of food hypersensitivity (n = 1139) were asked to fill in a questionnaire in which 86 different foodstuffs were listed. Skin-prick tests (SPT) were performed with common inhalant allergens.
RESULTS: The foods that were reported as eliciting symptoms differed between countries. In Russia, Estonia, and Lithuania; citrus fruits, chocolate, honey, apple, haze

Food allergy represents a highly up-to-date and continually increasing problem of modern man. Although being present in all ages, it most often occures in children aged up to three years. Sensitization most often occurs by a direct way, but it is also possible to be caused by mother's milk, and even transplacentally. Predisposition of inadequate immune response to antigen stimulation, reaginic or nonreaginic, is of non-selective character so that food allergy is often multiple and to a high rate associated with inhalation and/or contact hypersensitivity. Also, due to antigen closeness of some
