Malnutrition in cancer patients is highly prevalent. The metabolic and physiologic changes associated with the disease and the side effects of treatment regimens all combine together to produce a detrimental effect on the patient's nutritional status. A poor nutritional status significantly reduces the efficacy of treatment methods and the patient's overall chances of survival. Therefore, an individualized nutrition care plan is essential to counter malnutrition in cancer. Nutritional assessment is the first step of this process which sets the foundation for developing an effective interventio

Weight loss and malnutrition is common in cancer patients, both origin of complications during the course of the disease. Although weight loss is predominantly due to loss of fat mass, the morbidity risk is given by the decrease in muscle mass. The causes of malnutrition are numerous, but the tumor cachexia and anorexia are the principals. The assessment of nutritional status is essential for a diagnosis of nutritional compromise and for the multidisciplinary management required. Subjective Global Assessment combines medical history, physical examination to classify patients as well nourished,

In this work, we have planned to perform a nutritional assessment of a group of 50 students from the University of Granada, to which questionnaires have been administered relating to 24-hour remembrance of type and frequency of food consumption, for 30 days. In order to know macro- and micronutrients intake, the results have been analyzed with DietSource software. At the same time, anthropometrical measurements have been taken to verify their possible change during the study period. We have been able to observe a protein intake slightly higher than the recommended intake, similarly to what occ

Children with cancer are in need of nutritional support to combat the catabolic effects of malignant tumors and debilitation from surgical or other treatment and complicating infections and to maintain their immune system and other host defenses to combat cancer and infection. Also, growth must be supported in the child. Nutritional assessment should be an integral part of the care of the hospitalized and the ambulatory child. The main components of nutritional assessment are described: medical history; psychocultural history; dietary assessment; clinical examination for signs of deficiency; a

Eighty-two consecutive orthopedic patients were assessed nutritionally at the time of hospital admission and then at 10-day intervals until hospital dismissal. Forty-eight percent of the patients had one or more abnormal findings suggestive of protein-calorie malnutrition. In spite of this prevalence of abnormal findings, only patients with three abnormal findings or a serum albumin concentration of less than 3.5 g/dl had a longer-than-average hospital stay. During hospitalization, abnormal findings developed on only three patients, whereas one or more abnormal nutrition-related findings impro

The nutritional status of 91 patients on four psychogeriatric wards was assessed by anthropometric measurements and determination of circulating proteins. The patients had low mean values for weight, arm muscle circumference, plasma albumin and serum transferrin. Indicators of malnutrition were combined to define the nutritional status in each individual. Energy and/or protein undernutrition was found in 30% and obesity in 4%. Energy undernutrition was more common than protein deficiency. Undernutrition was quite common during the first year of hospitalization and did not correlate with the du

In recent years nutrition assessment and management in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) have drawn increased attention. Frequent evaluation of nutrition status is warranted in ALS, given the common occurrence of dysphagia and hypermetabolism and varying disease progression rates. Nutrition management includes dietary and swallow strategies, possible gastrostomy tube placement, and recommendations for vitamin and mineral supplementation. Strategies to assess and optimize nutrition status and prolong survival in ALS patients are reviewed with recommendations based on current research.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition among inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) subjects is well documented in the literature and may arise from factors including inadequate dietary intake, malabsorption, and disease activity. The aims of this present study were to complete a comprehensive nutrition assessment of IBD subjects.
METHODS: One hundred twenty-six consecutive adults with IBD completed anthropometric measures, 4-day food-record assessments, and biochemical markers of nutrition.
RESULTS: A high prevalence of inadequate nutrient consumption was observed: vitamin E (63%), vitamin D (36%), vitamin A (

Children with sickle cell disease have decreased height and weight when compared with their peers. Although exact reasons for poor growth have not been established, increased calorie and protein needs and deficiencies in zinc, folic acid, and vitamins A, C, and E may be factors. To determine whether inadequate nutrient intake contributes to this poor growth, we conducted a survey of the nutrition knowledge and practices of families affected by sickle cell disease. Sixty-one patients with a median age of 8 years (range, 13 months to 17 years) participated in the study. Patients with homozygous

If untreated, alcohol abuse, which often results from alcohol craving, causes major metabolic abnormalities, altered life-styles, lost productivity, and eventually death. Biochemical mechanisms that may contribute to alcohol craving include the stress response of the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis, the endogenous opiate beta-endorphin system, neurotransmitter synthesis and release, hypoglycemia, and nutrient deficiencies. The macronutrient ratio of meals, the resulting insulin response, and nutrient blood levels can affect amino acid and nutrient transport across the blood-brain barrier.

Malnutrition is an independent risk factor that negatively influences patients' clinical outcomes, quality of life, body function, and autonomy. Early identification of patients at risk of malnutrition or who are malnourished is crucial in order to start a timely and adequate nutritional support. Nutritional risk screening, a simple and rapid first-line tool to detect patients at risk of malnutrition, should be performed systematically in patients at hospital admission. Patients with nutritional risk should subsequently undergo a more detailed nutritional assessment to identify and quantify sp

Alterations in nutritional status are common and can be associated with increased morbidity and mortality. However, for healthcare providers, the definition of malnutrition is vague, insensitive, and poorly standardized. In contrast, nutrition risk is more easily defined, and recognizes that both poor nutritional status and disease severity contribute to increased morbidity and mortality. Clinicians need to identify patients who may already have evidence of nutrient deficiencies or have disease processes that affect nutrition risk. This article reviews risk assessment tools and provides practi

Despite increased interest in the role of copper deficiency in clinical problems and an increased understanding of the physiological roles of copper, the diagnosis of a marginal deficiency has not been perfected. The use of non-standardized procedures and the effects of factors other than copper nutriture have impeded identification of the "ideal" indicator of copper nutritional status in adult humans. The specific activity of copper enzymes, or of copper-containing enzymes in blood cells, such as erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and platelet or leukocyte cytochrome c oxidase, may be a better

A review of the following points was performed: Factors favouring the development and presence of malnutrition among hospitalized patients. Useful parameters in nutritional evaluation. Types of malnutrition. The Chang nutritional evaluation protocol is used in our Hospital, which is simple, inexpensive, reliable, specific and easily reproduced. This is based on five variables (three anthropometric and two biochemical), randomized and based on reference tables and values. A study was made on data corresponding to 70 patients, in whom a prevalence of malnutrition was observed in critical patient

Forty-nine consecutive patient admissions to a rehabilitation unit were evaluated by a nutritional assessment team. Measured parameters included serum albumin, height, weight, 24-hour protein and calorie intake, and response to 4 antigens (purified protein derivative, streptokinase/streptodornase, trichophyton, candida) administered by intradermal injections. Patients were classified normal (albumin greater than or equal to 3.5 gm%, positive skin tests, normal weight), Kwashiorkor (albumin less than 3.5gm%, anergic skin tests, no weight loss), marasmus (albumin greater than or equal to 3.5gm%,

While some symptoms of the malnourished state are obvious, others may be subtle. In either case, assessment is indicated to uncover any inconspicuous symptoms and secondly to quantitate those that are apparent. Such procedures are pertinent because immune competence and other organ systems related to survival are dependent on the adequately nourished state. It is also important to remember that certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies may accompany protein calorie malnutrition and thus their attention would be especially needed during the repair of this condition. The deficiencies seen most of

Malnutrition commonly complicates the course of patients with cirrhosis and has a multifactorial etiology. Despite the important role that nutrition plays in the prognosis of those with cirrhosis, the nutrition assessment process can be challenging in this setting. A number of tools are available to aid in the nutrition assessment of the cirrhotic patient; however, none are without limitations. Although the assessment process can be difficult, the ability to properly manage the nutrient needs of the patient presents an additional set of challenges because of the catabolic nature of the disease

Timely nutrition assessment and intervention in organ transplant recipients may improve outcomes surrounding transplantation. A pretransplant nutrition assessment should include a variety of parameters including physical assessment, history, anthropometric measurements, and laboratory tests. Malnutrition compromises posttransplant survival; prolonged waiting times worsen outcomes when patients are already malnourished. Severe obesity may decrease graft function and survival in kidney transplant recipients. In the pretransplant phase, nutritional goals include optimization of nutritional status
