A new database to guide reference material selection for dietary supplement and nutrition science.

Rigorous research on the health effects of dietary supplements and related nutritional interventions requires thorough chemical characterization of complex matrices for their composition of macro- and micronutrients, botanical phytochemicals, and potential contaminants. Reference materials (RMs) with metrologically traceable values for these specific properties are ideal analytical tools to ensure requisite chemical measurements are reliable. However, identifying and comparing appropriate RMs for studying dietary ingredients and their metabolites is challenging, creating a barrier to reproduci

Cancer Prevention and Therapy With Nutritional Science: Addressing the Gap in Medical Education and Practice.

Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. There exists a correlation between certain cancers and dietary factors. Several known carcinogens are present in the standard American diet, also known as the Western Diet. Additionally, food preparation methods can initiate carcinogenesis. Various dietary components, particularly plant-based foods, contain bioactive phytochemicals, have demonstrated potential anticancer effects through various molecular mechanisms. Consuming a wide variety of these so-called "cancer-fighting" foods may lead to synergism in preventing and slowing

The field-ready tea-box adaptometer: colonial nutrition science and/in imperial economies in Malawi.

In the late 1930s, children in three Malawian villages were subjected to a peculiar test for vitamin A deficiency devised by Dr. Benjamin Platt, director of the Nyasaland Nutrition Survey and a leading colonial nutrition scientist. Platt constructed a makeshift adaptometer, appropriate for field conditions, that could be placed over a subject's head to measure retinal adaptation to light. He built this contraption from simple materials, including a five-pound tea-box and sticking plaster. This article takes the curious commingling of commodity objects and scientific materials (where a discarde

Good science, poor visibility? Communicating behavioural nutrition and physical activity evidence in the algorithmic attention economy.

Behavioural nutrition and physical activity research has produced a strong and growing evidence base to inform prevention, treatment, and policy across a wide range of health outcomes. Yet the visibility of this evidence beyond academic audiences does not consistently reflect its scientific quality. Increasingly, dissemination occurs within digital environments shaped by algorithms that prioritise engagement, simplicity, novelty, and emotional salience over nuance and uncertainty. This creates a mismatch between the complexity that characterises behaviour change science and the attention-drive

Artificial intelligence in food and nutrition science: a paradigm-centric review of computational frameworks and system-level integration.

Precision nutrition on a global scale necessitates an understanding of food not as static collections of so-called macronutrients but rather as dynamic and heterogeneous biochemical matrices. These complex non-linear interactions between food composition, gastrointestinal digestion and the human microbiome are difficult to capture using traditional empirical experimental methods. This review articulates a paradigm-based framework that reconceptualizes artificial intelligence (AI) in food and function science, from generic industrial applications to the computational modeling of physiological a

A Narrative Review of Integrating Artificial Intelligence and Omics in Food Science and Nutrition: Current Uses, Issues, and Future Perspectives.

This narrative review examines how artificial intelligence (AI) and omics are being integrated in food science and nutrition, with particular attention to current applications, practical limitations, and challenges that are specific to foods and dietary exposure. Foods are complex, multicomponent matrices whose composition and biological effects can change during processing, cooking, storage, and consumption. Dietary exposure also varies over time and across individuals. These features make food and nutrition fundamentally more difficult to model than many domains in which AI has advanced rapi

Review of Dietary Recommendations for Twin Pregnancy: Does Nutrition Science Keep Up with the Growing Incidence of Multiple Gestations?

Recommendations for nutrition and the use of dietary supplements for pregnant women are updated on regular basis but it remains to be seen to what extent they may be applicable in twin pregnancies. The aim of this narrative review is to present the current state of knowledge about the energy and nutrient demand in twin pregnancy. There is general consensus in literature that the energy demand is higher than in a singleton pregnancy, but there is a lack of position statements from scientific societies on specific energy intake that is required. In turn, recommended maternal weight gain, which f
