Seasonal activity patterns of Ixodes pacificus nymphs in relation to climatic conditions.

In western North America, the tick Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls (Acari: Ixodidae) is the primary vector to humans and domestic animals of the disease agents causing Lyme disease and granulocytic ehrlichiosis. We examined the seasonal activity patterns of I. pacificus nymphs over a 4-year period, including the wet and cold El Niño winter/spring of 1998, in a dry oak/madrone woodland, and for one year in a cooler and moister redwood/tanoak woodland in Mendocino County, California. Linear regressions were used to estimate when nymphal densities first exceeded and then fell below 25, 50 and 75%

The nymph of Gilliesia Peters & Edmunds, 1970 (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae), with description of a new species from Thailand.

The new species Gilliesia ratchaburiensis sp. nov. is described based on male and female imagos (some of them reared from nymphal stages), nymphs and eggs collected in western Thailand. The nymph of Gilliesia, which is described for the first time, has bifid gills, a dense patch of setae on the ventral side of the glossae, no posterolateral spines on abdominal segment VIII, maxillary palpi 3-segmented and very reduced maxillary canines. Compared to congeners, the male imagos of the new species have penis lobes more straight and with the apical portion bent laterally but not ventrally, and fema

A Novel Cuticular Protein-like Cpr21L Is Essential for Nymph Survival and Male Fecundity in the Brown Planthopper.

Cuticular proteins (CPs) are a large family and perform a variety of functions. However, the physiological roles of cuticle protein 21-like (Cpr21L) in the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens, BPH), one of the most destructive insect pests of rice, are largely unclear. In this study, Cpr21L was revealed to be expressed in both BPH nymphs and adults, and the mRNA expression level was much higher in male adults than female adults. Spatially, the expression of Cpr21L in the testis was higher than in the ovary. The RNA interference (RNAi) of Cpr21L seriously decreased nymph survival, and no indi

Immune responses of interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) knock out mice to repeated Haemaphysalis longicornis (Acari: Ixodidae) nymph infestations.

To investigate the immunological mechanisms of acquired resistance to tick infestation, interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) deficient mice (IFN-gamma mice) were used to assess interleukin-4 (IL-4) and antibody production levels against tick salivary gland antigen on three successive infestations with Haemoaphysalis longicornis Neumann nymphs. The engorged body weight of the ticks decreased during the second and third infestations. Similar observations were noted in IFN-gamma+/+ mice. However, the engorged body weight of the ticks from IFN-gamma +/+ mice were considerably lower than those from IFN-gam

An unusual case: repeated nocturnal biting of a bedridden human by a nymph of Tettigonia viridissima (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae).

Cases of adventitious biting on humans by non-hematophagous insects are rarely reported but hold significant medical relevance. This case report documents the first instance of repeated nocturnal biting in a bedridden, tetraparetic 59-year-old patient by a fifth-instar nymph of the great green bush-cricket, Tettigonia viridissima L. (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae). The patient sustained four superficial skin lesions on the left ear and forehead, accompanied by distinct blood smears. A live T. viridissima nymph was captured at the end of a dark red blood streak nearby. Biting activity was likely an

Ixodes scapularis nymph saliva protein blocks host inflammation and complement-mediated killing of Lyme disease agent, Borrelia burgdorferi.

Tick serine protease inhibitors (serpins) play crucial roles in tick feeding and pathogen transmission. We demonstrate that Ixodes scapularis (Ixs) nymph tick saliva serpin (S) 41 (IxsS41), secreted by Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb)-infected ticks at high abundance, is involved in regulating tick evasion of host innate immunity and promoting host colonization by Bb. Recombinant (r) proteins were expressed in Pichia pastoris, and substrate hydrolysis assays were used to determine. Ex vivo (complement and hemostasis function related) and in vivo (paw edema and effect on Bb colonization of C3H/HeN mic

Meteorological and climatic variables predict the phenology of Ixodes ricinus nymph activity in France, accounting for habitat heterogeneity.

Ixodes ricinus ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are the most important vector for Lyme borreliosis in Europe. As climate change might affect their distributions and activities, this study aimed to determine the effects of environmental factors, i.e., meteorological, bioclimatic, and habitat characteristics on host-seeking (questing) activity of I. ricinus nymphs, an important stage in disease transmissions, across diverse climatic types in France over 8 years. Questing activity was observed using a repeated removal sampling with a cloth-dragging technique in 11 sampling sites from 7 tick observatories

Ultrastructural changes in the midgut of Ixodes ricinus nymphs across feeding and digestion stages.

Ticks rely on host blood as their primary source of nutrients and energy. In hard ticks (Ixodidae), a single blood meal per life stage supports survival, metamorphosis, and, in females, egg production. The midgut, the major metabolic organ, is responsible for both digestion and nutrient storage. While previous studies have described tick midgut histology, many foundational works, often decades old, lacked modern histochemical, immunohistochemical, and high-resolution imaging techniques. Moreover, inconsistent nomenclature of midgut cells across species complicates comparative analyses. We here

Chronic Toxicities of Neonicotinoids to Nymphs of the Common New Zealand Mayfly Deleatidium spp.

Neonicotinoid insecticides have been shown to have high chronic toxicity relative to acute toxicity, and therefore short-term toxicity tests ≤96 h in duration may underestimate their environmental risks. Among nontarget aquatic invertebrates, insects of the orders Diptera and Ephemeroptera have been found to be the most sensitive to neonicotinoids. To undertake a more accurate assessment of the risks posed by neonicotinoids to freshwater ecosystems, more data are needed from long-term tests employing the most sensitive taxa. Using nymphs of the common New Zealand mayfly genus Deleatidium spp.,

Seasonal distribution of larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma tigrinum Koch, 1844 (Acari: Ixodidae).

The seasonality of immature stages of Amblyomma tigrinum was studied in an area of the Chaco phytogeographical province in Córdoba, Argentina by monthly collection of larvae from ground feeding birds and Sigmodontinae rodents, and nymphs from Caviidae rodents from May 2005 to April 2007. An apparent peak of abundance was found from December to May but differences with other months of the year were not significant (P>0.05). These and previous results suggest that the parasitic stages of A. trigrinum are active throughout the year and has more than one generation per year at the study site. Its

Precipitation and temperature as predictors of the local abundance of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) nymphs.

Populations of Ixodes scapularis Say nymphs were surveyed at a Lyme disease- endemic area for 8 consecutive yr (1998-2005) to characterize annual changes in abundance. Precipitation and temperature were also monitored over the period 1998-2004 to determine their potential value as predictors of tick abundance. Although both parameters showed annual variation, no statistical differences in the annual abundance of I. scapularis nymphs were observed over the 8-yr period. Our results suggest that precipitation and temperature were not predictive of the abundance of I. scapularis nymphs.

Borrelia burgdorferi infection modifies protein content in saliva of Ixodes scapularis nymphs.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) caused by Borrelia burgdorferi is the most prevalent tick-borne disease. There is evidence that vaccines based on tick proteins that promote tick transmission of B. burgdorferi could prevent LD. As Ixodes scapularis nymph tick bites are responsible for most LD cases, this study sought to identify nymph tick saliva proteins associated with B. burgdorferi transmission using LC-MS/MS. Tick saliva was collected using a non-invasive method of stimulating ticks (uninfected and infected: unfed, and every 12 h during feeding through 72 h, and fully-fed) to salivate into 2

Tracking of Borrelia afzelii Transmission from Infected Ixodes ricinus Nymphs to Mice.

Quantitative and microscopic tracking of Borrelia afzelii transmission from infected Ixodes ricinus nymphs has shown a transmission cycle different from that of Borrelia burgdorferi and Ixodes scapularisBorrelia afzelii organisms are abundant in the guts of unfed I. ricinus nymphs, and their numbers continuously decrease during feeding. Borrelia afzelii spirochetes are present in murine skin within 1 day of tick attachment. In contrast, spirochetes were not detectable in salivary glands at any stage of tick feeding. Further experiments demonstrated that tick saliva is not essential for B. afze

Prevalence and morphological characterizations of Linguatula serrata nymphs in camels in Isfahan Province, Iran.

Linguatula serrata, well known as tongue worm; is an aberrant cosmopolitan parasite, which inhabits the canine respiratory system (final host). The discharged eggs infect many plant feeder animals including human causing visceral and nasopharyngeal linguatulosis which is known as "Marrara syndrome". In current study, the prevalence of infection with L. serrata nymphs in mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) of slaughtered camels was investigated in Isfahan Province, Iran. The MLNs of 232 slaughtered camels, including 115 females and 117 males, were examined for L. serrata nymphs. Camels were categoriz

Cold tolerance of first-instar nymphs of the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera.

The cold tolerance of first-instar nymphs of the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera, was examined using measures of total body water content, supercooling point and mortality for a range of sub-zero temperature exposure regimes. The supercooling points for starved and fed nymphs were -13.1+/-0.9 and -12.6+/-1.6 degrees C, and freezing caused complete mortality. Above these temperatures, nymphs were cold tolerant to different degrees based on whether they were starved or given access to food and water for 24h prior to exposure. The rate of cooling also had a significant effect o

The natural hosts for larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma neumanni and Amblyomma parvum (Acari: Ixodidae).

Based on the hypothesis that birds and rodents are important hosts for subadults of the Neotropical Amblyomma neumanni and Amblyomma parvum ticks, a survey of these type of hosts was carried out from July 2004 to March 2006, in Quilino (A. parvum) and Dean Funes (A. neumanni), Córdoba province, Argentina. Additionally, monthly tick counts were performed on cattle and goats with occasional tick search in other domestic hosts. Records of questing height of subadult ticks on vegetation were also carried out monthly. Rodents (n = 123) and birds (n = 122) captured in Dean Funes showed no infestatio

A comprehensive method on black-legged tick larvae and nymph feeding on mice to study Lyme disease transmission and acquisition.

Tick-borne diseases are a growing public health concern in the United States, with cases rising steadily each year. Lyme borreliosis, or Lyme disease, remains the most prevalent, affecting approximately 476,000 individuals annually. Human-driven changes in climate and ecosystems have expanded the habitat of pathogen-carrying ticks, facilitating the spread of these infections. Additionally, increased instances of tick-borne diseases transmission through human tissues have been reported. Despite ongoing efforts to manage these infections, their incidence continues to rise. To develop effective c

Failure of the Amblyomma cajennense nymph to become infected by Theileria equi after feeding on acute or chronically infected horses.

Tick-borne diseases in horses are caused by the intraerythrocytic protozoan parasites Theileria equi and Babesia caballi. Although T. equi is highly endemic in Latin America, the New World vector of this important parasite is controversial. The aim of this study was to test the ability of nymph Amblyomma cajennense ticks acquire infection by T. equi following feeding on infected horses. Three experiments were performed: tick acquisition of T. equi from an experimentally infected horse, tick acquisition of T. equi from naturally infected foals and tick acquisition of T. equi from a chronically

Description of adults and nymph, and redescription of the larva, of Ornithodoros marinkellei (Acari:Argasidae), with data on its phylogenetic position.

The argasid tick Ornithodoros marinkellei Kohls, Clifford, and Jones, 1969 was described 4 decades ago based on larval specimens collected from bats (Pteronotus spp.) in Colombia and Panama. Thereafter, larval O. marinkellei parasitizing bats were reported from Venezuela, Guyana, and Brazil. Herein, we describe the adults and nymph, and redescribe the larva of O. marinkellei based on specimens recently collected in the western Brazilian Amazon region. In contrast to all other known adult argasids, the idiosoma of both males and females of O. marinkellei is covered with sclerotized plaques. The
