Fourteen-year trends in overweight, general obesity, and abdominal obesity in Amazonian indigenous peoples.

BACKGROUND: Available data show that the epidemiological profile of most indigenous Brazilian populations is characterized by the coexistence of long-standing health problems (high prevalence of infectious and parasitic diseases, malnutrition, and deficiency diseases, such as anemia in children and women of reproductive age), associated with new health problems, especially those related to obesity (hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia). Based on this scenario, this study analyzed the nutritional profile of the adult population of seven indigenous peoples from the Brazilian A

Intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome in burns, obesity, pregnancy, and general medicine.

Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) is an important contributor to early organ dysfunction in trauma and sepsis. However, relatively little is known about the impact of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) in general internal medicine, pregnant patients, and those with obesity or burns. The aim of this paper is to review the pathophysiologic implications and treatment options for IAH in these specific situations. A MEDLINE and PubMed search was performed and the resulting body-of-evidence included in the current review on the basis of relevance and scientific merit. There is increasing awareness of t

Smartphone-based abdominal inclination angles for assessing abdominal obesity: Convergent validity and reliability study.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal obesity is associated with increased cardiometabolic risk, highlighting the need for regular monitoring. However, tape-based waist circumference measurements may be inconvenient for repeated self-monitoring and do not readily support digital recording. Given the widespread availability of smartphones, measuring abdominal inclination angles using a smartphone inclinometer (SI) may be a practical option for assessing abdominal obesity. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the convergent validity and reliability of SI-derived abdominal inclination angles obtained thr

Overall and abdominal obesity in relation to venous thromboembolism.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal obesity has been shown to be a superior measure over overall obesity for detecting cardiovascular risk. OBJECTIVE: We conducted this study to compare the effects of overall and abdominal obesity on venous thromboembolism (VTE) and to calculate population attributable fraction for obesity for VTE. METHODS: Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were used to represent overall and abdominal obesity, respectively. In the cohort study, we included 74317 Swedish adults with anthropometric measures in 1997 and of whom 4332 were diagnosed with VTE until the end of 2

Optimal abdominal CT protocol for obese patients.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the impact of different protocols on radiation dose and image quality for obese patients undergoing abdominal CT examinations. METHODS: Five abdominal/pelvis CT protocols employed across three scanners from a single manufacturer in a single centre used a variety of parameters (kV: 100/120, reference mAs: 150/190/218/250/300, image reconstruction: filtered back projection (FBP)/iterative (IR)). The routine protocol employed 300 reference mAs and 120 kV. Data sets resulting from obese patient examinations (n = 42) were assessed for image quality using visua

Hyposomatotropism blunts lipolysis in abdominally obese women.

Abdominal obesity is associated with reduced 24-h plasma GH concentrations. It is unclear whether hyposomatotropism in abdominally obese humans is compensated by up-regulation of GH receptor sensitivity or causes less biological effect in target tissues. We, therefore, determined the responsiveness of adipose tissue to the lipolytic action of GH in abdominally obese (OB) and normal weight (NW) postmenopausal women. An iv bolus of recombinant human GH or placebo was randomly administered to eight NW [body mass index (BMI): 22.2 +/- 1.6 kg/m(2)] and eight abdominally OB (BMI: 32.1 +/- 2.6 kg/m(2

[Abdominal obesity: metabolic complications and consequences for the liver].

Obesity is associated with a number of metabolic and haemodynamic risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This risk depends on a complex of metabolic and haemodynamic consequences of (visceral) fat accumulation, which probably results from the continuous delivery of fatty acids to the liver via the portal vein. Hypertriglyceridaemia, hyperinsulinaemia, hypertension, insulin resistance and increased hepatic glucose production are all independent risk factors for atherosclerosis. Their combination increases the risk of cardiovascular disease considerably. Triglyceri

Abdominal obesity and hypertension: a double burden to the heart.

Abdominal obesity (AO) is strongly associated with increased cardiovascular risk in hypertensives. Visceral adipose tissue has an important part in water retention, the sympathetic nervous system and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activation, which may influence central and systemic hemodynamics. The aim of this study was to estimate the relationship between AO and the hemodynamic profile of patients with arterial hypertension (AH). The clinical evaluation of 144 hypertensives included the following: (1) echocardiographic assessment of the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), the g

Abdominal Obesity in Comparison with General Obesity and Risk of Developing Rheumatoid Arthritis in Women.

OBJECTIVE: Being overweight or obese increases rheumatoid arthritis (RA) risk among women, particularly among those diagnosed at a younger age. Abdominal obesity may contribute to systemic inflammation more than general obesity; thus, we investigated whether abdominal obesity, compared to general obesity, predicted RA risk in 2 prospective cohorts: the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) and NHS II. METHODS: We followed 50,682 women (1986-2014) in NHS and 47,597 women (1993-2015) in NHS II, without RA at baseline. Waist circumference (WC), BMI, health outcomes, and covariate data were collected throug

Is vitamin D deficiency an independent risk factor for obesity and abdominal obesity in women?

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D has been determined to have some effects on b cell function and insulin sensitivity, and it is known that type 2 diabetes mellitus and hyperparathyroidism can cause obesity. The aim of our study was to investigate if vitamin D deficiency without diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome is associated with obesity and abdominal obesity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 276 healthy premenopausal women. To exclude other causes of obesity, postmenopausal women and subjects with diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome were excluded. Women were divided into two group

Abdominal Fat Tissue Echogenicity: A Marker of Morbid Obesity.

PURPOSE: Menopause-related changes may affect regional but also morphological characteristics of adipose tissue. We sought to assess the clinical value of echogenicity of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and preperitoneal adipose tissue (pPAT) in postmenopausal women without cardiovascular disease. METHODS: In 244 consecutively recruited postmenopausal women, subclinical atherosclerosis was assessed in the femoral and carotid arteries by intima-media thickness (IMT) and atheromatous plaques using high-resolution ultrasonography. In 41 women with a second visit (median follow-up 41.5 months),

Delayed diagnosis of abdominal mass due to morbid obesity.

Obesity has become an increasing problem in developed countries. Obesity is associated with many of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality, including diabetes mellitus, coronary artery diseases, sleep apnoea, and many types of cancers. Not only is morbid obesity associated to a greater extent to the many medical problems related to obesity, but the body habitus of a morbidly obese patient causes limitation to physical examination, radiologic evaluations, and therapeutic interventions that can delay diagnosis and treatment of the patient. We present a case of a morbidly obese patient

Guiding clinical decisions on abdominal obesity and cardiometabolic risk.

Studies have shown that obesity increases cardiometabolic risk across the span of life. Obesity results in increased production of proinflammatory adipokines and decreased production of the anti-inflammatory adipokine, adiponectin, which eventually leads to atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Lifestyle changes are the cornerstone for treatment of overweight and obese patients; however, pharmacotherapy and surgery are 2 additional treatment options that may be considered when lifestyle changes alone are unsuccessful. Adipose tissue, particularly central adipose tissue, is an endocrine

Effects of increased intra-abdominal pressure in severe obesity.

This article gives an overview, citing animal and clinical studies, of the effects of increased intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) in severe obesity. Animal studies demonstrate that increased IAP increases pleural pressure, cardiac filling pressures, femoral venous pressure, renal venous pressure, systemic blood pressure, and vascular resistance, renin and aldosterone levels, and intracranial pressure. Thus, the comorbidities presumed secondary to increased IAP in obese patients include congestive heart failure, hypoventilation, venous stasis ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux, urinary stress inconti
