Metabolic obesity phenotypes: a friend or foe of digestive polyps?-An observational study based on National Inpatient Database.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of digestive polyps, whereas all obesity are not created equally. The role of metabolic states in occurrence risks of polyps among individuals with varying degrees of obesity remains unknown. Our study aimed to evaluate the association between metabolic obesity phenotypes and the occurrence of digestive polyps. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data from 9,278,949 patients between 2016 and 2018 from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database, a nationally representative database of all discharges from US health-care hospitals, were analyzed

Leukocyte related parameters in older adults with metabolically healthy and unhealthy overweight or obesity.

It remains unclear whether leukocyte-related parameters could be used as biomarkers to differentiate metabolically unhealthy overweight/obesity (MUO) from metabolically healthy overweight/obesity (MHO). We aimed to examine the differences in the distribution of leukocyte-related parameters between older adults with MHO and MUO and the correlations of leukocyte-related parameters with individual components of metabolic abnormality. In the Weitang Geriatric Diseases Study on older Chinese adults aged 60 years or above, 404 individuals with MHO and 480 with MUO contributed to the analysis. Overwe

Metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity in erectile dysfunction and male infertility.

Introduction: Metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUHO) is the most important preventable cardiovascular (CV) risk factor. Recently, the significance of metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) as a CV risk factor has raised increasing interest. MUHO is a known risk factor for erectile dysfunction (ED); however, the effect of MHO on ED has barely been investigated. This review aims at summarizing the evidence supporting the relation of MUHO and MHO to male sexual functioning and fertility. Areas covered: An extensive Medline search on obesity and ED or male infertility was conducted to summarize the r

Cardiorespiratory fitness and submaximal exercise dynamics in normal-weight obesity and metabolically healthy obesity.

PURPOSE: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is critical for cardiovascular health. Normal-weight obesity (NWO) and metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) may be at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, but a comparison of CRF and submaximal exercise dynamics against rigorously defined low- and high-risk groups is lacking. METHODS: Four groups (N = 40; 10/group) based on body mass index (BMI), body fat %, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors were recruited: healthy controls (CON; BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2, body fat < 25% [M] or < 35% [F], 0-1 risk factors), NWO (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2, body fat ≥

The joint associations of high birth weight and not having siblings with metabolic obesity phenotype among school-aged children and adolescents: A National Survey in China.

OBJECTIVE: Birth weight (BW) and sibling's status are two important indicators of early intrauterine environment and subsequent living environment, but no evidence has emerged on their joint associations on metabolic obesity phenotype. To determine the joint associations between BW and single-child status with childhood metabolic obesity phenotype was our purpose. METHODS: A cross-sectional assessment of children and adolescents aged 7-18 years was performed in Chinese seven provinces in 2013. We obtained anthropometric, blood pressure and biochemical measurements, and distributed questionnai

Associations of metabolic heterogeneity of obesity with frailty progression: Results from two prospective cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicated that obesity would accelerate frailty progression. However, obesity is heterogeneous by different metabolic status. The associations of metabolic heterogeneity of obesity with frailty progression remain unclear. METHODS: A total of 6730 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and 4713 from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) were included at baseline. Metabolic heterogeneity of obesity was evaluated based on four obesity and metabolic phenotypes as metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), metabolically

Adherence to the Mediterranean diet as a possible additional tool to be used for screening the metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) phenotype.

BACKGROUND: The terms metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) categorize subjects with obesity based on the presence or absence of cardio-metabolic risk factors. Detecting MUO phenotype is crucial due to the high risk of cardio-metabolic complications, requiring tailored and intensive follow-up. However, diagnosing MUO is time-consuming and costly. Thus, we aimed to investigate the role of Mediterranean diet (MD) in determining MHO/MUO phenotypes and whether adherence to MD could serve as an additional screening tool for MUO phenotype. METHODS: The study

Relationship between obesity severity, metabolic status and cardiovascular disease in obese adults.

BACKGROUND: Evidence about the associations between obesity severity, metabolic status and risk of incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adults with obesity remains limited. METHODS: The study included 109,301 adults with obesity free of prior CVD based on the UK Biobank cohort. Metabolic status was categorized into metabolically healthy obesity (MHO; free of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes) and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). Obesity severity was classified into three levels: class I (body mass index of 30.0-34.9 kg/m2 ), II (35.0-39.9) and III (≥40.0). Cox proporti

The effect of metabolic health and obesity on lung function: A cross sectional study of 114,143 participants from Kangbuk Samsung Health Study.

OBJECTIVE: Although the role of obesity-induced metabolic abnormalities in impaired lung function is well-established, the risk of impaired lung function among obese individuals without metabolic abnormalities, referred to metabolically-healthy obesity (MHO), is largely unexplored. Therefore, we evaluated the impact of MHO on lung function in a large health-screening cohort. METHODS: 114,143 subjects (65,342 men, mean age and BMI: 39.6 years and 23.6) with health examinations in 2019 were divided into four groups as follows: metabolically healthy non-obese (MHNO), MHO, metabolically unhealthy

The cardiovascular risk of metabolically healthy obesity: an inflammatory perspective.

Metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) is a heterogeneous phenotype characterized by preserved traditional metabolic markers despite excess adiposity. However, accumulating evidence suggests that MHO may not be uniformly benign and may confer increased long-term cardiovascular risk through inflammatory and adipose tissue-mediated mechanisms. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary evidence on cardiovascular risk in MHO, focusing on visceral adiposity, ectopic fat, and immune metabolic pathways. Literature published between January 2010 and December 2025 was identified through PubMed/MEDLIN

Predicting the Transition to Metabolically Unhealthy Obesity Among Young Adults With Metabolically Healthy Obesity in South Korea: Nationwide Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Globally, over 39% of individuals are obese. Metabolic syndrome, usually accompanied by obesity, is regarded as a major contributor to noncommunicable diseases. Given this relationship, the concepts of metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity, considering metabolic status, have been evolving. Attention is being directed to metabolically healthy people with obesity who have relatively low transition rates to noncommunicable diseases. As obesity rates continue to rise and unhealthy behaviors prevail among young adults, there is a growing need for obesity management that considers
