Visualization of Midwives' Professional Work Time a Comparative Analysis Between Obstetric Internal Medicine and Surgical Nursing.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing specialization, the domain-level structure of nurses' and midwives' daily activities remains under-characterized, and few studies compare obstetric with general wards using a single 37-subcategory taxonomy. In Japan, census- and acuity-based staffing under the Medical Care Act/DPC-PDPS captures headcount but underrepresents indirect care such as documentation and coordination. Quantifying domain-level time is therefore needed to align ward staffing with actual workload. We aimed to quantify obstetric midwives' day-shift work time using the JNA 37 - subcategory frame

Hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count syndrome: nursing care of the critically ill obstetric patient.

Although patients with severe preeclampsia and eclampsia are infrequently admitted to critical care areas, it is important that the critical care nurse be aware of the HELLP syndrome. The case presentations demonstrated hemolysis, liver dysfunction, and abnormal platelet consumption. Knowledge of the clinical and laboratory findings will assist in nursing assessment and intervention for these critically ill obstetric patients.

Abuse and Disrespect in Obstetric Care in the United States: A Qualitative Descriptive Study of Nurse Experiences.

BACKGROUND: This qualitative descriptive study of the experiences of US labor and delivery nurses follows the World Health Organization's call to address abuse and disrespect of women in maternity care. The majority of research about abuse and disrespect for childbearing women has been conducted in Africa, Asia, and Europe, but the US is unique as a high-income country with largely capitalist or privatized health care. The objective of this study was to gain knowledge about abuse and disrespect in hospital-based maternity care in the US from the perspective of labor and delivery nurses. METHO

Development of a questionnaire to evaluate the management of gestational diabetes mellitus patients among obstetric nurses.

BACKGROUND: The role of obstetric nurses in the management of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is becoming increasingly important, and their management level will directly affect the patient's health education and even the pregnancy outcome. However, there is a lack of tools to measure the competencies of GDM management among obstetric nurses. METHODS: The questionnaire was developed in two stages: (a) creation of an initial questionnaire based on the definition of competency, literature review, and semi-structured interviews, followed by two rounds of Delphi expert inquiry; (b) evaluation

Why do nurses abuse patients? Reflections from South African obstetric services.

Nurse-patient relationships are a substantially neglected area of empirical research, the more so in developing than developed countries. Although nursing discourse usually emphasises "caring", nursing practice is often quite different and may be more strongly characterised by humiliation of patients and physical abuse. This paper explores the question: why do nurses abuse patients, through presentation and discussion of findings of research on health seeking practices in one part of the South African maternity services. The research was qualitative and based on 103 minimally structured in-dep

Career mobility of maternal care providers in Mali: a mixed method study on midwives and obstetric nurses.

BACKGROUND: An important strategy to reduce maternal and child mortality in Mali is to increase the number of deliveries assisted by qualified personnel in primary care facilities, especially in rural areas. However, placements and retention of healthcare professionals in rural areas are a major problem, not only in Mali but worldwide, and are a challenge to the health sector. The purpose of this study was to map the mobility of midwives and obstetric nurses during their work lives, in order to better understand their career paths and the role that working in rural areas plays. Sustainable Postpartum Hemorrhage Training for Rural Obstetric Nurses in the Absence of Routine Patient Care Experiences.

Critical access birthing units are essential for the well-being of maternal and neonatal patients in rural areas; however, many rural hospitals are closing their birthing units due to a variety of complex factors, including the difficulty of maintaining highly trained staff. These closures worsen the already vast "maternity care deserts" found across much of the rural United States. Postpartum hemorrhage is one of the most common complications during childbirth, but nurses providing care at low-birth-volume hospitals in rural areas often lack routine exposure to postpartum hemorrhage and have

Identification of obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIs) and other lacerations: a national survey of nurse-midwives.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Clinical quality improvement relies on accurate understanding of current practice. We performed a cross-sectional national survey of certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) assessing classification and identification of obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI) and other delivery lacerations. We hypothesized laceration diagnoses are frequently inaccurate, and delivery records for obstetric lacerations may be of questionable quality. METHODS: We emailed 6909 American College of Nurse Midwives members an internet-based survey link. Of respondents, we included clinically active

Prevention and Management of Severe Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries (OASIs): a National Survey of Nurse- Midwives.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: There are no data on midwives' knowledge and management of obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIs) in the USA. We performed a cross-sectional national survey characterizing OASI practice by certified nurse midwives (CNMs), hypothesizing that few midwives personally repair OASIs and that there are gaps in CNM OASI training/education. METHODS: We emailed a REDCap internet-based survey to 6909 American College of Nurse Midwives members (ACNM). We analyzed responses from active clinicians performing at least one delivery per month, asking about OASI risks, preventio
