Occipital aneurysmal bone cyst secondary to eosinophilic granuloma.

We describe the case of a 2-year-old male patient with an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) of the occiput secondary to unifocal eosinophilic granuloma (EG). The lesion presented as a painless mass of the scalp which had grown rapidly over the 2 weeks prior to admission. Radiologically, the lesion was osteolytic and multicystic with fluid-fluid levels. On histology, the cyst wall contained hemosiderin-laden histiocytes, spindle cells, multinucleated giant cells, Langerhans' cells and eosinophils. Surgical treatment consisted of en bloc resection. Fourteen months after surgery, the patient was well wi

Giant intradiploic epidermoid cyst of the occipital bone.

A rare case of giant intradiploic epidermoid cyst of the occipital bone with large intracranial extension in the posterior fossa is described. The lesion was discovered when the patient presented with headache and subcutaneous swelling in the occipital region, in the absence of signs of neurological involvement. CT scan showed extensive destruction of the occipital bone, mainly of the inner table, up to the foramen magnum. On MRI the lesion was hypointense in T(1) and hyperintense in T(2)-weighted images; signal inhomogeneity was due to cellular debris and cholesterol crystals. The enhancing r

Occipital calvarial bone graft in posterior occipitocervical fusion.

STUDY DESIGN: Dorsal occipitocervical fusion is associated with a high rate of fusion failure and requires an additional surgical site for donor bone graft harvesting. In this series, an autologous occipital calvarial bone graft obtained from the same occipitocervical incision with contoured metal loops was used in 25 adults to achieve craniovertebral stabilization and fusion. OBJECTIVES: To study the use of autologous occipital calvarial bone grafts in occipitocervical fusion. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Cranial bone grafts have been used successfully in craniofacial reconstruction with goo

Solitary plasmacytoma of the occipital bone: a case report.

Solitary plasmacytoma (SP) of the skull is an uncommon clinical entity that is characterized by a localized proliferation of neoplastic monoclonal plasma cells. This case report describes a 50-year-old male that presented with a headache and an exophytic soft mass on the occiput. The diagnosis of SP was based on the pathological results and imaging examinations. The patient underwent occipital craniotomy, skull reconstruction and lower trapezius myocutaneous flap (LTMF) transplantation under general anaesthesia. The tumour was capsulized and extended to the subcutaneous and the subdural space

Chondroblastoma of the occipital bone with aneurysmal bone cyst: A rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Chondroblastoma is a rare, benign bone tumor originating from immature chondrocytes, typically found in the epiphyseal plates of long bones. Its occurrence in the skull, particularly the occipital bone, is extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 10-year-old girl presenting with paroxysmal dizziness, occipital pain, and a palpable mass. Imaging studies revealed an osteolytic lesion in the occipital bone with a multiloculated appearance, indicating a concomitant aneurysmal bone cyst. The patient underwent craniotomy with complete tumor excision. Postoperative follow-up showed

[Clinical aspects and differential diagnosis of occipital bone processes].

Tumours and tumour-like processes of the cranial bones do not occur very frequently; 2.5 per cent of all bone tumours are found in the calotte. On the other hand, the pre-operative and operative error possibilities regarding these processes are considerable, leaving multiple bone metastases out of consideration. The situation is complicated by many processes in the vicinity of the bone which affect or alterate the bone secondarily. On the basis of two better known tumours, the giant cell tumour and the aneurysmatic bone cyst, the diagnostic possibilities and difficulties are discussed in great

Computed tomography of the occipital bone for sex estimation in Turks.

OBJECTIVE: Sex estimation is a fundamental component of forensic identification when DNA analysis is not feasible. Because cranial morphology and sexual dimorphism vary among populations, population-specific standards are required. However, occipital bone morphometric data for Turkish adults remain limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of occipital bone measurements obtained from cranial computed tomography for sex estimation in Turkish adults. METHODS: Three-dimensional cranial computed tomography images of 384 individuals (192 females, 192 males), aged 18

Ectopic cerebellar tissue in the occipital bone: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic cerebellar tissue located distantly from the normal cerebellum is very rare, and its pathophysiology remains to be elucidated. CASE PRESENTATION: We report an extremely rare case of intraosseous ectopic cerebellum detected incidentally at suboccipital craniotomy in a 46-year-old Japanese woman with hemifacial spasm. She had a small bone defect in the occipital bone, which contained a tiny area of soft tissue surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid connecting to the normal subarachnoid space through a dural opening. Histopathology demonstrated cerebellar cortex tissue consisting

Solitary plasmacytomas of the occipital bone: a report of two cases.

The radiological appearances of two cases of solitary plasmacytoma in the occipital bone are described. One arose in the lateral part and the other in the squama. They showed characteristic radiological features on CT, MRI and angiography. Bone scintigraphy and gallium scintigraphy were also available. Solitary plasmacytoma of the skull is a rare condition and usually occurs in the calvarium. The skull base is an extremely rare site and only four cases have been reported. The literature of solitary plasmacytoma of the skull is reviewed.

Chronic vermal herniation in a case of osteosarcoma of the occipital bone.

Upward projection of the cerebellar vermis through the tentorial hiatus is called upward vermal herniation (UVH). UVH is less common in clinical practice than uncal herniation. Even more uncommon is chronic vermal herniation and impaction in the tentorial hiatus. To illustrate this phenomenon, we present the clinical, radiological, and morphological features of vermal impaction in a patient with a postradiation osteosarcoma of the occipital bone. In spite of nearly total excision of the tumor pushing the cerebellum upward, his postoperative course was complicated by respiratory problems and an

Vascularized Occipital Bone Grafting: Indications, Techniques, Clinical Outcomes, and Alternatives.

Successful arthrodesis at the craniocervical junction and atlantoaxial joint can be more challenging than in other segments of the cervical spine. Different techniques for spinal fixation in this region have been well described, along with auxiliary methods to improve fusion rates. The occipital vascularized bone graft is a novel technique that can be used to augment bony arthrodesis in the supra-axial cervical spine. It provides the benefits of a vascularized autologous graft, such as accelerated healing, earlier fusion, and increased strength. This technique can be learned with relative ease

Fibrous dysplasia of occipital bone revealed by acute intracranial hypertension.

Fibrous dysplasia of bone is a stem cell bone disease due to a somatic GNAS mutation which can affect craniofacial bones. Although craniofacial fibrous dysplasia is a benign and progressive disorder, it can cause mass effect on the cranial structures. We describe an 18-year-old man, without past medical history, came at the emergency department with progressively worsening headache, associated with vomiting. Cranial bone CT and then brain MRI revealed fibrous dysplasia of occipital bone with intraosseous cyst, compression of right sigmoid vein. An angiography was performed to stent the right s

Arachnoid granulations: a rare cause of lytic occipital bone lesion.

Arachnoid granulation is often found incidentally in the dural sinuses and skull. It may also enlarge the dural sinus or inner table of the skull. We report a 46-year-old woman who presented with occipital headaches and arachnoid granulations in both transverse sinuses and torcular herophili. Neurological examination was normal. Fundoscopic examination, visual fields and acuity were normal. The headache resolved with medical treatment. No intervention for these lesions was planned. The patient was followed up with magnetic resonance imaging studies.

Occipital aneurysmal bone cyst rupture following head trauma: case report.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign, expansile, osteolytic lesions that represent 1%-2% of primary bone tumors. Cranial ABCs are even more rare and represent 3%-6% of these unique lesions. The authors describe the case of a 3-year-old girl who presented with an acute posterior fossa epidural hematoma after minor trauma. Imaging workup revealed a previously undiagnosed suboccipital ABC that appeared to have ruptured as a result of her trauma, leading to a life-threatening hemorrhage. To the authors' knowledge, a ruptured ABC has never before been presented in the pediatric literature. In th

Giant intradiploic epidermoid tumor of the occipital bone: case report.

The authors describe a case of a giant intradiploic epidermoid cyst of the occipital bone with an intracranial extension in the posterior fossa and no signs of neurological involvement. The lesion started as a painless lump under the scalp. Roentgenographic and computed tomographic findings led to a correct diagnosis, and the complete removal of the cyst was accomplished, despite its large size. The total removal of these cysts is associated with a good prognosis.

Junction between membranous and endochondral bones in the developing occipital squamosa.

The occipital bone squamosa (OCS) is unique because of its double origin from both endochondral and membranous bones. The present study attempted to demonstrate the process of connection between these two bone types. We examined sagittal and frontal histological sections from 29 human fetuses with a crown-rump length ranging from 38 to 328 mm (approximately 7-39 weeks of gestational age [GA]). An initial cartilage plate appeared in the posterior side of the fourth ventricle at GA 7-8 weeks and extended inferiorly to connect with the cartilaginous basioccipital and condyle. At GA 9-10 weeks, on

Chondroblastoma of the Occipital Bone With Atypical Genetic Markers: A Case Report.

Chondroblastoma is a rare bone tumor, most often found in epiphyseal plates of long bones. It has infrequently been reported in the skull, most often in the temporal bone. We present a case of chondroblastoma of the occipital bone in a pediatric patient presenting with a bony protuberance of the occiput and imaging consistent with obstructive hydrocephalus, which persisted even after removal of the obstructing tumor. Pathological examination demonstrated that this unusually placed tumor also lacked the classic genetic markers typically associated with chondroblastoma.
