Effect of Occlusal Splints on the Stress Distribution on the Temporomandibular Joint Disc.

Conservative approach, including occlusal splint therapy, is the first option to treat temporomandibular disorders (TMD), because of its reversibility. The present study analyzed the effect of the articular disc position and occlusal splints use on the stress distribution on this disc. A two-dimensional (2D) finite element (FE) model of the temporomandibular joint with the articular disc at its physiologic position was constructed based on cone-beam computed tomography. Three other FE models were created changing the disc position, according to occlusal splint use and anterior disc displacemen

A digital process for additive manufacturing of occlusal splints: a clinical pilot study.

The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a digital process for manufacturing of occlusal splints. An alginate impression was taken from the upper and lower jaws of a patient with temporomandibular disorder owing to cross bite and wear of the teeth, and then digitized using a table laser scanner. The scanned model was repaired using the 3Data Expert software, and a splint was designed with the Viscam RP software. A splint was manufactured from a biocompatible liquid photopolymer by stereolithography. The system employed in the process was SLA 350. The splint was worn nightly for six mo

Use of light-cured resin to manufacture occlusal splints: report of two cases.

This article presents selected cases of patients with functional disorders of the stomatognathic system. This group of patients had a need to made different types of removable occlusal splints. In the past, occlusal appliances were made mostly using self-cured acrylate materials, which for many years had no replacements. The rapid development of dental materials technology led to creation of thermo-formable materials and resins, which can successfully replace traditional acrylic materials in daily clinical practice. A practical application of light-cured resin in the fabrication of the occlusa

[Occlusal splint: state of the art].

Occlusal splint are defined as intra-oral devices mostly indicated to modify the occlusal relationship between maxillar and mandibular dental arches. Among the different shapes of occlusal splint, an updating seemed necessary to the authors. The main indications for occlusal splint are represented by temporomandibular disorders and teeth protection. Occlusal splints are usually made of hard resin and are, generally, carried on the mandibular jaw. Total occlusal splint are preferable to partial occlusal splint, except in some emergent cases. The smooth occlusal splints are needed for musculo-ar

Improving the Mechanical Properties of Orthodontic Occlusal Splints Using Nanoparticles: Silver and Zinc Oxide.

The goal of the current study was to determine the mechanical proprieties of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and the improved compound, the graphene-based PMMA, with Zn and Ag and to compare the results. Scanning electron microscopy analysis of the samples before and after the mechanical test was conducted. The compression behavior, flexural properties, tensile strength, and shape of the samples were all investigated and compared between the variants of PMMA. Commercially available polymethylmethacrylate was used (Orthocryl®-Dentaurum, Ispringen, Germany) with the salt and pepper technique accor

Treatment effects of maxillary flat occlusal splints for painful clicking of the temporomandibular joint.

Existing therapies for symptoms related to painful clicking of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) have rarely met with complete success and predicting prognosis remains difficult. Few studies have reported the efficacy of maxillary flat occlusal splints (MFOSs) for the treatment of painful clicking of the TMJ, and few studies have evaluated the predisposing factors that influence the clinical outcomes of MFOSs. The aim of this study was to investigate the treatment efficacy of MFOSs for painful clicking of the TMJ, and to determine the factors influencing TMJ therapy with MFOSs. We conducted a

Side effects of stabilization occlusal splints: a report of three cases and literature review.

Stabilization splints are frequently used for the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and bruxism, despite the fact that little is known about their mechanism of action or the precise conditions under which they can be recommended. Moreover, information about their possible adverse effects, which in the majority of cases include occlusal modifications of little clinical relevance, is scarce. On occasions, these splints can provoke severe occlusal alterations and other complications, which are rarely alluded to in the literature. Here presented in this paper are three case reports in

Versatility of Hard Occlusal Splints in Optimizing Outcomes in Patients with Old Pan-facial Fractures.

UNLABELLED: Pan-facial fracture repair is considered one of the most challenging complex reconstructive procedures to perform. It is always better to treat facial fractures as soon as possible. A delay of several days or weeks makes an ideal anatomic reduction difficult, if not impossible. METHODS: Patients presenting late with noncompound pan-facial fractures and interrupting maxillary and mandibular arches who were candidates for ORIF were included. Patients had been divided randomly into two groups: group A was managed by the ordinary sequence of repair, and group B was managed with the ai
