Development and evaluation of an occupational health services programme on the prevention and control of effects of vibration.

The outline of a study in occupational health services (OHS) on the prevention and control of effects of whole-body vibration is described and preliminary results are presented here. The study comprises an inventory of current activities of occupational health services in vibration-related issues, the development of a specific OHS-programme and evaluation of this programme, mainly on process level. Results of the inventory, a questionnaire survey in occupational health services (n = 112, response 67%), show that the impact of OHS in prevention and control of adverse health effects is small. Th

Comprehensive occupational health services for healthcare workers in Zimbabwe during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are disproportionately affected by COVID-19. In low- and middle- income countries, they may be particularly impacted by underfunded health systems, lack of personal protective equipment, challenging working conditions and barriers in accessing personal healthcare. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, occupational health screening was implemented at the largest public sector medical centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, during the "first wave" of the country's COVID-19 epidemic. Clients were voluntarily screened for symptoms of COVID-19, and if present, offered a SARS-C

Assessment of Indoor Air Quality Problems in Office-Like Environments: Role of Occupational Health Services.

There is an increasing concern about indoor air quality (IAQ) and its impact on health, comfort, and work-performance in office-like environments and their workers, which account for most of the labor force. The Scientific Committee on Indoor Air Quality and Health of the ICOH (Int. Comm. Occup. Health) has discussed the assessment and management of IAQ problems and proposed a stepwise approach to be conducted by a multidisciplinary team. It is recommended to integrate the building assessment, inspection by walk-through of the office workplace, questionnaire survey, and environmental measureme

Evaluation research in occupational health services: general principles and a systematic review of empirical studies.

OBJECTIVES: To study the nature and extent of evaluation research in occupational health services (OHSs). METHODS: Literature review of evaluation research in OHSs. On the basis of a conceptual model of OHS evaluation, empirical studies are categorised into aspects of input, process, output, outcome, and OHS core activities. RESULTS: Many methods to evaluate OHSs or OHS activities exist, depending on the objective and object of evaluation. The amount of empirical studies on evaluation of OHSs or OHS activities that met the non-restrictive inclusion criteria, was remarkably limited. Most of t

Utilization of HIV and tuberculosis services by health care workers in Uganda: implications for occupational health policies and implementation.

BACKGROUND: Access to HIV testing and subsequent care among health care workers (HCWs) form a critical component of TB infection control measures for HCWs. Challenges to and gaps in access to HIV services among HCWs may thus compromise TB infection control. This study assessed HCWs HIV and TB screening uptake and explored their preferences for provision of HIV and TB care. METHODS: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study involving 499 HCWs and 8 focus group discussions was conducted in Mukono and Wakiso districts in Uganda between October 2010 and February 2011. RESULTS: Overall, 5% of the HCW

Occupational rehabilitation services provided by a community workers health centre in Hong Kong: a case study.

BACKGROUND: In Hong Kong, the Employees' Compensation Ordinance (ECO), based on the model of the English Workmen's Compensation Act 1943, establishes a no-fault, non-contributory system for work injuries. It focuses merely on the minimum social expectation in compensating injured workers in monetary terms, but does not place much emphasis on prevention, rehabilitation and return to work policies for workers with injury. There is a need to reform an effective and comprehensive occupational rehabilitation system for workers with work injury in Hong Kong. METHODS: This paper presents a case stud

Retrospective evaluation of measures in the field of occupational health services during the COVID-19 epidemic.

OBJECTIVES: In the Czech Republic, employers and employees are bound by legal regulations that ensure occupational health and safety. These regulations are based on international conventions of the International Labour Organization and directives of the European Parliament and Council and have long been incorporated into Czech legislation. During the COVID-19 epidemic, emergency and crisis measures led to a limitation of occupational health examinations (OHEs) in the Czech Republic, which represented a significant disruption of the occupational health and safety system. The aim of the study wa

Effectiveness of interventions for the prevention of occupational violence against professionals in health services: a protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational violence affects several categories of workers; however, the health sector category has been considered at a high risk, exposing workers to physical and psychological abuse. Thus, occupational violence has decreased the quality of care in health service. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for the prevention and reduction of occupational violence against health professionals. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This protocol is consistent with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols. Searches will be conducted in

Implementation of occupation-centred practice by occupational therapists in acute adult physical settings: A mixed method study in a regional and rural health service.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational therapy is underpinned by the belief that occupation facilitates health and wellbeing. However, evidence suggests that occupational therapists encounter challenges to implementing occupation-centred practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the uptake, acceptability and impact of a workplace intervention designed to enhance occupation-centred practice of occupational therapists in an acute adult physical context. METHODS: A concurrent mixed methods study using a pre-post design was employed. The setting was a regional and rural health service in Queensland.

[Good practice in occupational health services: recommendations for prophylactic examinations and medical certifications in persons with diabetes mellitus].

The prevalence of diabetes and a significant proportion of unawareness of its risk among the patients indicate the need to include into general prophylactic examinations the standards of medical certification, which would prevent discrimination and ensure public safety. In certifying medical predispositions to work in a person with diabetes mellitus the key issue is to distinguish 2 categories of medical requirements: the higher - related to qualifying workers for jobs demanding psychophysical abilities, which affect the safety of the workers and their environment and the lower - related to qu

Home-based telework and worker health and well-being across service occupations: A critical interpretive synthesis.

The rapid expansion of home-based telework since COVID-19 has diversified the remote workforce to include service occupations centered on real-time interaction with patients, clients, and customers. Yet the literature on telework and health remains largely oriented toward the experiences of knowledge workers, obscuring how home-based telework shapes the health and well-being of interaction-intensive service workers. We conducted a Critical Interpretive Synthesis of 69 peer-reviewed studies (2000 to 2025) to develop a theoretical account of how home-based telework is experienced across service

[Three outbreaks of brucellosis in a one-year period investigated by the occupational health service in Ciudad Real (Spain)].

We describe 3 outbreaks of brucellosis investigated by our Occupational Health Service in a 1-year period. Two of these outbreaks, with 2 cases each, occurred in 2 cheese factories and the third outbreak, also with 2 cases, occurred in a cattle laboratory belonging to the local government. In both cheese factories, numerous opportunities for the workers to become infected were found. The greatest risk was considered to be the area for unloading milk, while failure to use personal protection equipment by workers, deficiencies in the laboratories, and the lack of effective separation between are

Incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis by occupation of hospital employees in the National Health Service in England and Wales 1980-84.

Examination of occupational health records for National Health Service employees in hospitals in England and Wales for 1980-84 has shown that the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis has fallen for all occupations. Levels for all occupational groups, except mortuary attendants, are now comparable to or lower than that for the general population. An average of 3 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis would be expected to occur annually amongst the 20,790 staff (including mortuary attendants) classified as being at higher risk and offered annual X-rays. Routine annual X-rays failed to identify 60 per ce

Understanding health services and puberty for autistic adolescents and those with disability: A scoping review to inform occupational therapy practice.

INTRODUCTION: Puberty is a transitional period presenting challenges for autistic adolescents, adolescents with disabilities and their families. There are opportunities for occupational therapy to provide support to this cohort as adolescents navigate the complexity of puberty transition. However, there is a lack of published evidence and knowledge translation to guide practice. It is important to scope the literature to gain understanding of the pubertal experiences of autistic adolescents, adolescents with a disability, their families and services accessed for support. The aim of this scopin

Occupational Balance, Quality of Life, and Recovery Among Older Mental Health Service Users-A Cross-Sectional Study.

Occupational balance is associated with better quality of life and recovery in mental health service users; however, research focusing on such relationships among older adults within this group remains scarce. This explorative cross-sectional study examined relationships between occupational balance and quality of life and recovery in 49 older mental health service users, while also investigating how anxiety/depression and living arrangement (cohabiting vs. living alone) influenced those relationships. Self-report questionnaires were used, then analyzed statistically. Participants generally pe

Integrating an occupational therapist into a primary health care team: a mixed-method evaluation of a home-based service delivery.

BACKGROUND: Incorporating occupational therapists (OTs) into primary care requires adapting services to patient needs and depends on how colleagues within the multidisciplinary team perceive the OT roles and collaborate in daily practice. This study explored the feasibility, impact on the care team, and challenges of incorporating an OT into the home-based care service of a Spanish primary healthcare center. METHODS: A two-phase sequential exploratory mixed-methods study was conducted. First, structured interviews and a stakeholder focus group were conducted over the six months following the i
