The effectiveness of master's degree programs for occupational therapists.

Are graduates of master's degree programs in occupational therapy satisfied with the content of their programs and the results of their studies? Are these programs commensurate with the needs of the occupational therapy profession in the development of skilled practitioners, educators, administrators, and researchers. These two questions provided the framework for an investigation to determine the needs, trends, strengths, and weaknesses of graduate study in occupational therapy in the United States today. The responses of 100 occupational therapists from 12 universities, 61.4 per cent of thos

Interdisciplinary activity between occupational therapists and speech language pathologists.

The interdisciplinary activities between occupational therapists (OTs) and speech language pathologists (SLPs) were studied by conducting a national mail survey. Analysis of data gathered from 344 OTs and 262 SLPs (n = 1250 and n = 1130, respectively), indicated strikingly similar responses. Results showed that OTs and SLPs in the medical setting had frequent informal contacts, but interdisciplinary activity was not typical of formal job descriptions. According to 84% of OTs and 91% of SLPs, the most common activity involved exchange of diagnostic information, while 66.6% of both groups identi

Paediatric occupational therapists' views on applying interoception in practice contexts.

INTRODUCTION: Interoception, the ability to notice, understand, and act on internal bodily signals, is increasingly recognised as relevant to children's self-regulation and participation. While a growing body of research has examined interoception-based assessments and interventions with children across health disciplines, less is known about how these concepts are being interpreted and applied within paediatric occupational therapy practice. Understanding current clinical reasoning and practice use is important to support evidence-informed occupational therapy intervention in this emerging ar

Victorian primary school teachers' perspectives on collaboration with occupational therapists.

INTRODUCTION: Effective interprofessional collaboration between primary school teachers and occupational therapists is crucial in fostering inclusive learning environments. Occupational therapists work in schools to assist children who require additional support through the recommendation of capacity building strategies. Teachers play a fundamental role in ensuring these recommendations are implemented consistently, making collaboration with occupational therapists important for student performance and participation. However, various factors impact this collaborative process. There is a lack o

Assessing work speed using MODAPTS: A tool for occupational therapists.

BACKGROUND: The importance to be able to work is recognised as one of the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. Occupational therapists working in vocational rehabilitation require cost effective, valid, and reliable tests that offer flexibility during the work evaluation process. The use of self-developed work samples standardized using Modular Arrangement of Predetermined Time Standards (MODAPTS) as an objective measure of work speed could meet this need. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the face, content, and criterion validity of MODAPTS work samples to assess work speed. METHODS: We conduct

Indicators of need for occupational therapy in patients with chronic pain: occupational therapists' focus groups.

This study explores occupational therapists' (OT) perceptions of indicators for occupational therapy interventions among patients with chronic pain. An exploratory design was applied to six focus groups of OTs (n = 25) for data collection. Analysis was performed using content analysis through identification of meaning units, codes, categories and themes. Limitations of occupational performance was a major theme that included participant restrictions caused by physical, emotional and environmental barriers. Five subthemes of need were identified: 1) pain behaviour that prevented engagement in a

Preparing Occupational Therapists to Support Parenting Occupations: Perspectives from the United States.

Parenting is a valued occupation, yet occupational therapists report uncertainty in supporting parents in adult practice. This study examined parenting-related practices, confidence, preparation, and barriers among seventy-seven occupational therapists in the United States working primarily with adults. Online survey responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman correlations, and Mann-Whitney U tests. Although 96% identified parenting as within occupational therapy's scope and 61% reported providing parenting-related interventions, formal assessment was uncommon; only 6% used

The author demonstrates the importance of maintaining meaningful occupational engagement during this critical life stage by incorporating evidence from orthopedic, rehabilitation, and hand therapy research. New and expectant mothers are at high risk for upper extremity (UE) conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, De Quervain's tenosynovitis, and tendinosis of the UE. Occupational therapists with basic knowledge of hand therapy are well
