Ocean acidification drives grazer niche convergence and trophic homogenization in benthic communities.

Ocean acidification is expected to alter marine food webs, yet community-level evidence from long-term, naturally acidified systems remains limited. We used stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) to investigate how natural acidification restructures benthic trophic interactions, from basal resources to consumer niche dynamics, a naturally acidified system (pH gradient: 8.1 to ~7.4; pHT scale) spanning present-day to end-of-century projected conditions (SSP2-4.5 to SSP5-8.5). After accounting for local differences in the isotopic baseline, we found that: (1) community isotopic space contracted u

Metabolomic and physiological analyses of two picochlorophytes from distinct oceanic latitudes under future ocean acidification and warming.

Phytoplankton are cosmopolitan marine photosynthetic organisms that are vital to biogeochemical cycles and marine ecosystems. The current rise in atmospheric CO2 and surface ocean temperatures are poised to disrupt the ecological niches of phytoplankton. Picochlorophytes, a broad taxon of small green eukaryotic phytoplankton, have been shown to perform well under future rising oceanic CO2 and temperature scenarios. This study investigates the acclimation responses of cosmopolitan picochlorophytes from the Chlorella-lineage under high CO2 (1000 p.p.m.) and a rise of 4 °C (8 °C - polar picochlor

Field CO2 enrichment by submarine vents unravels Zostera noltii response to ocean acidification.

Under future climate change, seagrasses may benefit from the effect of ocean acidification, although their response may be species-specific and may also depend on several ecological factors. Using a field manipulative approach, this study investigated the morphology and physiology of the seagrass Zostera noltii under the effect of increased CO2 concentrations, taking advantage of the presence of natural shallow submarine CO2. Comparisons between transplanted plants from control pH sites to low pH site with translocated control pH plants allowed investigating the short-term acidification effect

How Ocean Acidification Makes Marine Fish Reproduction Vulnerable: Physiological Mechanisms and Ecosystem Consequences.

Ocean acidification, driven by the absorption of anthropogenic carbon dioxide into seawater, poses a significant threat to marine environments and biodiversity. This comprehensive review examines the specific impacts of acidification on the reproductive physiology of fish, integrating recent advances in our understanding of gonadal development, gametogenesis, and early embryonic development. We synthesize current findings on how altered carbonate chemistry disturbs the reproductive system from gametogenesis and fertilization to larval development and beyond. Our analysis reveals that ocean aci

Morphological adjustments enable sea urchins to sustain calcified structure function under ocean acidification.

Ocean acidification can reduce the size of calcified structures produced by marine calcifiers, raising questions about their competitiveness and persistence in future oceans. Yet, size reduction in calcified structures may represent a plastic response to ocean acidification if these structures remain functional. To test this hypothesis and examine whether morphological plasticity can influence the functionality of calcified structures, we assessed the effects of ocean acidification on the morphological, mechanical and chemical properties of the calcified structures of a sea urchin species prev

Interactive effects of ocean acidification and warming disrupt calcification and microbiome composition in bryozoans.

Marine habitat-forming species provide crucial ecosystem functions and services worldwide. Still, the individual and combined long-term effects of ocean acidification and warming on bryozoan populations, structures, and microbiomes remain unexplored. Here, we investigate the skeletal properties, microbiome shifts, and population trends of two bryozoan species living inside and outside a volcanic CO2 vent, a natural analog to future ocean acidification conditions. We show that bryozoans can acclimatize to acidification by adjusting skeletal properties and maintaining stable microbiomes. However

Impact of land-based freshwater inflows on coastal ocean acidification in the Arabian Sea.

Coastal ocean acidification is a growing global concern, especially in densely populated regions where terrestrial inputs complicate its dynamics. Unlike the open ocean, coastal waters are heavily influenced by freshwater inflows. This study investigates the impact of riverine and groundwater inputs on seawater pH variability in the coastal Arabian Sea. River discharge leads to greater pH reduction during the monsoon (0.170 ± 0.021), while groundwater, despite its high alkalinity, causes a stronger decline in the non-monsoon season (0.296 ± 0.036) due to elevated pCO₂ levels (27,318 ± 5076). Response of the photosynthetic physiology of Ulva lactuca to Cu toxicity under ocean acidification.

Ocean acidification can significantly affect the physiological performance of macroalgae. While copper (Cu) is an essential element for macroalgae and has been extensively studied, the interactive effects of ocean acidification and Cu on these organisms remain less understood. In this study, we measured the photosynthetic characteristics of Ulva lactuca exposed to varying Cu concentrations at two CO2 levels (415 ppmv, low concentration; 1000 ppmv, high concentration). The results indicated that during chronic toxicity testing, the growth of juvenile U. lactuca significantly increased at Cu con

Ocean Acidification Reduces Spine Mechanical Strength in Euechinoid but Not in Cidaroid Sea Urchins.

Echinoderms are considered particularly sensitive to ocean acidification (OA) as their skeleton is made of high-magnesium calcite, one of the most soluble forms of calcium carbonate. Recent studies have investigated effects of OA on the skeleton of "classical" sea urchins (euechinoids), but the impact of etching on skeleton mechanical properties is almost unknown. Furthermore, the integrity of the skeleton of cidaroids has never been assessed, although their extracellular fluid is under-saturated with respect to their skeleton, and the skeleton of their primary spines is in direct contact with

The metabolic response of marine copepods to environmental warming and ocean acidification in the absence of food.

Marine copepods are central to the productivity and biogeochemistry of marine ecosystems. Nevertheless, the direct and indirect effects of climate change on their metabolic functioning remain poorly understood. Here, we use metabolomics, the unbiased study of multiple low molecular weight organic metabolites, to examine how the physiology of Calanus spp. is affected by end-of-century global warming and ocean acidification scenarios. We report that the physiological stresses associated with incubation without food over a 5-day period greatly exceed those caused directly by seawater temperature

Ocean acidification exacerbates UVR-induced inhibition of photosystem II and I in Corallina officinalis.

Ocean acidification (OA) exerts diverse effects on marine macroalgae, with calcified species being particularly vulnerable. Due to calcified skeletons can contribute to physical screening against solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR), OA-driven calcification loss may increase exposure of the photosynthetic apparatus to UVR. Here, we cultured Corallina officinalis under ambient CO₂ (∼420 μatm) or elevated CO₂ (∼1000 μatm), with or without UVR, under natural solar radiation. Our results confirmed that OA reduced calcification and, under UVR, enhanced donor-side impairment of photosystem II (PSII), a

Ocean acidification induces changes in circadian alternative splicing profiles in a coral reef fish.

Alternative splicing is a fundamental mechanism of gene expression regulation that increases mRNA diversity and can be partially regulated by the circadian clock. Time-dependent production of transcript isoforms from the same gene facilitates coordination of biological processes with the time of day and is a crucial mechanism enabling organisms to cope with environmental changes. In this study, we determined the impact of future ocean acidification conditions on circadian splicing patterns in the brain of fish, while accounting for diel CO2 fluctuations that naturally occur on coral reefs. Ocean acidification alters foraging behaviour in Dungeness crab through impairment of the olfactory pathway.

Crustacean olfaction is fundamental to most aspects of living and communicating in aquatic environments and more broadly, for individual- and population-level success. Accelerated ocean acidification from elevated CO2 threatens the ability of crabs to detect and respond to important olfactory-related cues. Here, we demonstrate that the ecologically and economically important Dungeness crab (Metacarcinus magister) exhibits reduced olfactory-related antennular flicking responses to a food cue when exposed to near-future CO2 levels, adding to the growing body of evidence of impaired crab behaviou

Ocean acidification drives species-specific and time-dependent pigment responses in three phytoplankton taxa.

Phytoplankton are primary producers in marine ecosystems and play a central role in biogeochemical cycles, yet their physiological responses to altered seawater pH vary among taxa and over time. Here, we examined the effects of sustained pH manipulation on pigment composition, growth, and dark respiration in three ecologically important phytoplankton taxa - a diatom (Pseudo-nitzschia spp.), a dinoflagellate (Heterocapsa pygmaea), and a haptophyte (Emiliania huxleyi) - during a 15-day controlled laboratory experiment. Cultures were maintained at pH 8.1, 7.8, and 7.5, representing present-day an

Interactive effects of ocean acidification and benzophenone-3 on mussel physiology: A biomarker-based approach.

Benzophenone-3 (BP3), a widely used ultraviolet (UV) filter in personal care products and industrial applications, is an emerging concern in aquatic ecosystems due to its lipophilicity, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity to marine biota. Its occurrence in marine environments coincides with ocean acidification driven by rising atmospheric CO2 emissions, which disrupts the bicarbonate buffer system and reduces pH. This study investigated the acute effects (96 h exposure) of BP3 (at realistic concentrations of 0.2 and 2 μg/L) under 3 pH conditions (8.1- the current South Atlantic condition-

Multifactorial neural disruption in the brain of the Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) under ocean acidification.

Global ocean acidification, driven by rising atmospheric CO2, threatens marine ecosystems and biodiversity, with increasing evidence of disruptive effects on fish neurobiology and behaviour. However, the precise mechanisms underlying these impacts remain largely unresolved. Here, we reveal how chronic exposure to future-predicted CO2 levels disrupts brain function in the marine teleost Solea senegalensis. Using an integrative approach combining electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry and transcriptomics, we demonstrate that elevated CO2 induce a complex multifaceted disruption in brain physiolo

Differential impacts of ocean acidification and alkalinization on shell microstructure and molecular responses in Mytilus edulis.

Anthropogenic CO2 emissions are intensifying ocean acidification (OA), disrupting carbonate chemistry and threatening marine calcifiers such as mussels. Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) has been proposed as a marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) strategy that can also mitigate OA, but its ecological safety for aquaculture species remains poorly understood. Here, we examined the short-term (21 days) responses of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis to OA (pH 7.3) and NaOH-based OAE (pH 9.0) using integrated shell microstructure analysis and transcriptomics. The results showed that while survival ra

Changes in photosynthesis and grazing facilitate growth of a mixotrophic protist under ocean acidification and warming.

Mixotrophic protists capable of both photosynthesis and phagotrophy are key members of marine plankton communities. Yet, little is known about their responses to the combination of ocean acidification and warming. A marine mixotrophic chrysophyte, Ochromonas CCMP2951, was subjected to two levels of pCO2 (300 and 800 ppm, resulting in pH of 8.2 and 7.8) and temperature (21°C and 26°C) in a factorial design. Enhanced growth rates were observed in both the high CO2 and high temperature treatments, while cell size significantly decreased with temperature. Strongly decreased cellular phosphorus con

Physiological and transcriptomic responses of Sargassum hemiphyllum var. chinense to ocean acidification and nitrogen enrichment.

Sargassum hemiphyllum var. chinense is a major brown macroalga and has important ecological and economic significance. Ocean acidification and nitrogen enrichment are serious threats to marine ecosystems primarily by altering the physiology of organisms. However, the response of S. hemiphyllum var. chinense to the combined effects of ocean acidification and elevated nitrogen levels remains unclear. This study conducted a 7-day dual-factor experiment to investigate the physiological and transcriptional responses of S. hemiphyllum var. chinense under two CO2 levels (400 μatm and 1000 μatm) and t
