[Zoonoses with wildlife reservoirs: a threat to public health and the economy].

The world is experiencing an increase in emergent infections as a result of anthropogenic changes of the biosphere and globalization. Global warming unrestricted exploitation of natural resources such as forests and fisheries, urbanization, human migration, and industrialization of animal husbandry cause environmental destruction and fragmentation. These changes of the biosphere favor local emergence of zoonoses from their natural biotopes and their interaction with domestic animals and human populations. Subsequently, international commerce, human and animal migration and travel, favor the di

Iron isotopes reveal distinct dissolved iron sources and pathways in the intermediate versus deep Southern Ocean.

As an essential micronutrient, iron plays a key role in oceanic biogeochemistry. It is therefore linked to the global carbon cycle and climate. Here, we report a dissolved iron (DFe) isotope section in the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean. Throughout the section, a striking DFe isotope minimum (light iron) is observed at intermediate depths (200-1,300 m), contrasting with heavier isotopic composition in deep waters. This unambiguously demonstrates distinct DFe sources and processes dominating the iron cycle in the intermediate and deep layers, a feature impossible to see with only iron concen

Changes in total mercury, methylmercury, and selenium blood levels during different life history stages of the Baltic grey seal (Halichoerus grypus grypus).

Using the blood of grey seal pups, the blood and milk of female grey seals inhabiting the Hel Marine Station of Gdansk University's Institute of Oceanography (HMS), we monitored the transfer of total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), and selenium (Se) with blood during foetal life and nursing. Changes in the concentration of mercury and selenium were characterised in the pups' blood during their first three months of life when they transition from suckling, to a post-weaning fast, to eating fish. In the blood of pregnant females, there was a significant decrease in THg and MeHg concentratio

The next scientific revolution.

For decades, computer scientists have tried to teach computers to think like human experts. Until recently, most of those efforts have failed to come close to generating the creative insights and solutions that seem to come naturally to the best researchers, doctors, and engineers. But now, Tony Hey, a VP of Microsoft Research, says we're witnessing the dawn of a new generation of powerful computer tools that can "mash up" vast quantities of data from many sources, analyze them, and help produce revolutionary scientific discoveries. Hey and his colleagues call this new method of scientific exp

Nitrogen-rich and fire-resistant carbon aerogels for the removal of oil contaminants from water.

Effective removal of crude oils, petroleum products, organic solvents, and dyes from water is of significance in oceanography, environmental protection, and industrial production. Various techniques including physical and chemical absorption have been developed, but they suffer from problems such as low separation selectivity, a complicated and lengthy process, as well as high costs for reagents and devices. We present here a new material, termed nitrogen-rich carbon aerogels (NRC aerogels,) with highly porous structure and nitrogen-rich surfaces, exhibiting highly efficient separation of spec

Speciation and hydration forces in sodium carbonate/bicarbonate aqueous solutions nanoconfined between mica sheets.

The equilibrium between hydrated and hydrolysed forms of CO2 in water is central to a multitude of processes in geology, oceanography and biology. Chemistry of the carbonate system is well understood in bulk solution, however processes such as mineral weathering and biomineralisation frequently occur in nano-confined spaces where carbonate chemistry is less explored. For confined systems, the speciation equilibria are expected to tilt due to surface reactivity, electric fields and reduced configurational entropy. In this discussion paper we provide measurements of interaction force between neg

Functional responses of key marine bacteria to environmental change - toward genetic counselling for coastal waters.

Coastal ecosystems deteriorate globally due to human-induced stress factors, like nutrient loading and pollution. Bacteria are critical to marine ecosystems, e.g., by regulating nutrient cycles, synthesizing vitamins, or degrading pollutants, thereby providing essential ecosystem services ultimately affecting economic activities. Yet, until now bacteria are overlooked both as mediators and indicators of ecosystem health, mainly due to methodological limitations in assessing bacterial ecosystem functions. However, these limitations are largely overcome by the advances in molecular biology and b

The use of a custom mode electron capture detector to determine mixing ratios of environmental tracers: Sulfur hexafluoride, chlorotrifluoromethane and bromotrifluoromethane.

Atmospheric concentrations of anthropogenic trace gases, such as sulfur hexafluoride, SF6, chlorotrifluoromethane, CF3Cl, and bromotrifluoromethane, CF3Br, are increasing. Their long lifetimes and limited chemical reactivity make them attractive environmental tracers for hydrology and oceanography. While ambient SF6 concentrations can be readily measured using GC-ECD, the simultaneous analysis of CF3Cl and CF3Br is hampered due to their low ECD sensitivity. The response of a commercial ECD for those gases was enhanced using the resonance detection mode which is based on shifting the mean energ

Gaidropsarus mauritanicus (Gadiformes, Gaidropsaridae) a new three-bearded rockling from a deep-water coral ecosystem with a genetically verified biogeographical distribution of the genus and notes to its ecology and behavior.

Gaidropsarus mauritanicus sp. nov. is described from one specimen collected using a grab sample from the Tanoûdêrt Canyon (ca. 20° N) off Mauritania at a depth of 595 m. The new species was further observed during eight remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives along the Mauritanian slope southwards down to the Tiguent Coral Mound Complex (~17° N) in a bathymetric range between 613 and 416 m. It can be distinguished from congeners by a combination of characteristics, including large eyes (38.1% head length [HL]), large head (25.8% standard length [SL]), elongated pelvic fins (35.7% SL), low number

What happens in the shadows - Influence of seasonal and non-seasonal dynamics on domoic acid monitoring in the Monterey Bay upwelling shadow.

Domoic acid produced by toxigenic Pseudo-nitzschia species is the main toxin threat from harmful algal blooms in Monterey Bay and the larger California Current region on the West Coast of the United States. Toxin monitoring in Monterey Bay includes a long-running time series of weekly measurements of domoic acid from water samples, sentinel mussels, and solid phase adsorption toxin tracking (SPATT) at the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf (SCW). The SCW sampling site is unusual because of its position in the Monterey Bay upwelling shadow in the north bay. The upwelling shadow circulation pattern has

Experimental Studies of Bioinspired Shark Denticles for Drag Reduction.

Shark skin is composed of denticles, or complex scale-like features, which have been shown to reduce drag in turbulent and laminar flow. The denticle crown features undulating structures called riblets that interact with the turbulent boundary layer to reduce drag. Two mechanisms thought to contribute to the drag-reducing properties of riblets include the lifting of streamwise vortices and the hampering of spanwise vortex interactions to reduce crossflow, which could translate to similar flow mechanisms for denticles. Because of the varied morphologies of dermal denticles on different shark sp

Long term outcome of chondromesenchymal hamartoma of sinonasal cavity: a rare entity.

Multiple lineages of birds have independently evolved foraging strategies that involve catching aquatic prey by striking at them through the water's surface. Diurnal, visual predators that hunt across the air-water interface encounter several visual challenges, including sun glint, or reflection of sunlight by the water surface. Intense sun glint is common at the air-water interface, and it obscures visual cues from submerged prey. Visually-hunting, cross-media predators must therefore solve the problem of glint to hunt effectively. One obvious solution is to turn away from the sun, which woul

Phylogeography of bivalve Cyclina sinensis: testing the historical glaciations and Changjiang River outflow hypotheses in northwestern Pacific.

BACKGROUND: The marginal seas of northwestern Pacific are characterized by unique topography and intricate hydrology. Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain genetic patterns of marine species inhabiting the region: the historical glaciations hypothesis suggests population genetic divergence between sea basins, whereas the Changjiang River outflow hypothesis suggests genetic break in line with the Changjiang Estuary. Here the phylogeography of bivalve Cyclina sinensis was investigated to test the validity of these two hypotheses for intertidal species in three marginal seas-the East China

Pleistocene isolation and recent gene flow in Haliotis asinina, an Indo-Pacific vetigastropod with limited dispersal capacity.

Haliotis asinina is a broadcast-spawning mollusc that inhabits Indo-Pacific coral reefs. This tropical abalone develops through a nonfeeding larval stage that is competent to settle on specific species of coralline algae after 3-4 days in the plankton. Failure to contact an inductive algae within 10 days of hatching usually results in death. These life cycle characteristics suggest a limited capacity for dispersal and thus gene flow. This makes H. asinina particularly suitable for elucidating phylogeographical structure throughout the Indo-Malay Archipelagoes, and eastern Indian and western Pa

Biologging intelligent Platform (BiP): an integrated and standardized platform for sharing, visualizing, and analyzing biologging data.

Sharing biologging data can facilitate collaborative research and biological conservation by providing maps showing animals' distribution and movements. It is a critical social mission to preserve not only horizontal position data, but also behavioral data such as diving depth, flight altitude, speed, and acceleration, as well as physiological data such as body temperature, along with related metadata, ensuring their preservation for future generation. Moreover, although biologging was initially developed in the field of biology, it now contributes to diverse fields such as meteorology and oce

Temporal, Environmental, and Biological Drivers of the Mucosal Microbiome in a Wild Marine Fish, Scomber japonicus.

Changing ocean conditions driven by anthropogenic activities may have a negative impact on fisheries by increasing stress and disease. To understand how environment and host biology drives mucosal microbiomes in a marine fish, we surveyed five body sites (gill, skin, digesta, gastrointestinal tract [GI], and pyloric ceca) from 229 Pacific chub mackerel, Scomber japonicus, collected across 38 time points spanning 1 year from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Pier (La Jolla, CA). Mucosal sites had unique microbial communities significantly different from the surrounding seawater and sedime

Habitat use by critically endangered North Pacific right whales linked to sea ice dynamics at varying spatial scales.

Documenting distributional shifts in populations is critical for understanding ecosystem function and developing effective conservation strategies, particularly for rare and understudied species. The Critically Endangered eastern population of North Pacific right whale (NPRW) was driven to near extinction by commercial whaling and has not recovered (N < 35). We analyzed passive acoustic data from seven sites along the eastern Bering Sea shelf (2012-2019) to investigate spatial and environmental associations of NPRW calling patterns on a rapidly warming primary foraging ground. Model predicts coastal paralytic shellfish toxicity in mussels from in situ phytoplankton concentrations.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) of Alexandrium catenella occur annually in the Gulf of Maine, leading to accumulation of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) in bivalve mollusks and closure of harvesting areas. State monitoring programs in the region rely on weekly shellfish sampling and toxin analysis, requiring extensive effort with limited temporal resolution. With the development of autonomous in situ detection devices such as the Environmental Sample Processor (ESP), this study aimed to model shellfish toxicity using ESP-derived A. catenella counts to complement traditional monitoring programs u

Distinct gelatinous zooplankton communities across a dynamic shelf sea.

Understanding how gelatinous zooplankton communities are structured by local hydrography and physical forcing has important implications for fisheries and higher trophic predators. Although a large body of research has described how fronts, hydrographic boundaries, and different water masses (e.g., mixed vs. stratified) influence phytoplankton and zooplankton communities, comparatively few studies have investigated their influence on gelatinous zooplankton communities. In July 2015, 49 plankton samples were collected from 50 m depth to the surface, across five transects in the Celtic Sea, of w
