Evidence for tactile 3D shape discrimination by octopus.

Octopuses integrate visual, chemical and tactile sensory information while foraging and feeding in complex marine habitats. The respective roles of these modes are of interest ecologically, neurobiologically, and for development of engineered soft robotic arms. While vision guides their foraging path, benthic octopuses primarily search "blindly" with their arms to find visually hidden prey amidst rocks, crevices and coral heads. Each octopus arm is lined with hundreds of suckers that possess a combination of chemo- and mechanoreceptors to distinguish prey. Contact chemoreception has been demon

Repeating ultrastructural motifs provide insight into the organization of the octopus arm nervous system.

The peripheral nervous system of the octopus is among the most complex of any animal. In each arm, hundreds of serial ganglia form a central core of nervous tissue processing sensory input, issuing motor commands, and exchanging information with the central brain.1,2,3,4,5 In addition to the central cord, there are two other types of neural elements: fine intramuscular nerve cords (INCs)6,7 and small sucker ganglia at the base of each sucker.2,6,8,9 Connections between these different elements and the structural organization of the arm nervous system remain poorly understood, despite decades o

Observations on associated histopathology with Aggregata octopiana infection (Protista: Apicomplexa) in Octopus vulgaris.

Gamogony and sporogony of Aggregata octopiana were commonly observed during histological examination of the digestive tract of wild Octopus vulgaris from Ria de Vigo (NW Spain). A. octopiana infected noncuticularized caecum and intestine, and cuticularized oesophagus and crop. Infection was also observed in the gills and in covering mesenterium, mainly of the digestive gland and gonad. Histological and ultrastructural lesions associated with A. octopiana included host cell hypertrophy with nuclear displacement, inflammation, phagocytosis, ulceration and destruction of organ architecture. The p

Cephalopod behaviour.

Underlying all animal behaviors, from the simplest reflexive reactions to the more complex cognitive reasoning and social interaction, are nervous systems uniquely adapted to bodies, environments, and challenges of different animal species. Coleoid cephalopods - octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish - are widely recognized as the most behaviorally complex invertebrates and provide exciting opportunities for studying the neural control of behaviour. These unusual molluscs evolved over 400 million years ago from slow-moving armored forms to active predators of coastal and open ocean ecosystems. In th

The octopus pot on the North Atlantic Iberian coast: A plague of plastic on beaches and dunes.

This baseline focuses on the octopus pot, a litter item found on the North Atlantic Iberian coast. Octopus pots are deployed from vessels in ropes, with several hundred units, and placed on the seabed, to capture mostly Octopus Vulgaris. The loss of gears due to extreme seas state, bad weather and/or fishing-related unforeseen circumstances, cause the octopus pots contaminating beaches and dunes, where they are transported by sea current, waves and wind actions. This work i) gives an overview of the use of octopus pot on fisheries, ii) analyses the spatial distribution of this item on the coas

Immature trematodes of Lecithochirium sp. (Digenea: Hemiuridae) in the California two-spot octopus (Octopus bimaculatus) from Mexico.

Immature trematodes of Lecithochirium sp. are recorded for the first time as parasites of the California two-spot octopus Octopus bimaculatus from Bahía de los Ángeles, Baja California, Mexico. Thirty-nine O. bimaculatus were examined for trematodes and a total of 100 immature specimens of Lecithochirium sp. were recorded from the crop of seven infected octopuses. Based on these records, O. bimaculatus may act as a second intermediate or paratenic host for these parasites. Partial sequences of the 28S (region D1-D3) ribosomal gene corroborate the identifications based on morphological characte

Dynamics of sperm transport and histological structure of the female reproductive system in Octopus vulgaris (Cephalopoda: Octopodidae).

In this study, we aimed to provide a detailed microanatomical description of the female reproductive system of Octopus vulgaris, an internally fertilized cephalopod, and to identify its functional characteristics. The female reproductive system of O. vulgaris consists of the ovary, common oviduct, proximal oviduct, oviducal gland, and distal oviduct, and histologically, the structure is similar to that reported in other octopods. The presence of spermatozoa and spermatophore remnants in the distal oviduct suggests that spermatophoric reaction may occur in this region. The released sperm then m

A comparative study between two fishing areas, one near and other far from industrial cities, for estimating mercury levels in octopus's liver and arms.

BACKGROUND: Molluscs, especially octopus, is a nutritious seafood, containing high levels of proteins, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential minerals. However, marine pollution with heavy metals such as mercury (Hg), lead, and cadmium (Cd) is a growing concern, as these elements can accumulate in octopus tissues as a result of the marine food chain. AIM: This study aimed to determine the from beaches near the Zawiya refinery and compare them with samples taken from beaches far from industrial cities (Marsa Zawagha/b). METHODS: Hg concentrations (mg/kg wet weight) were measured using the Buck Sc

Vessel-Like Microtunnels with Biomimetic Octopus Tentacles for Seizing and Detecting Exosomes to Diagnose Pancreatic Cancer.

Microchip-based exosome analysis has emerged as a promising approach for liquid biopsy in cancer diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and prognostic evaluation. However, current microchips for exosome analysis typically rely on planar, 2D channel structures with affinity properties, which require complex fabrication but deliver suboptimal separation and detection performance. This study presents a novel vessel-like microtunnel chip, integrated with biomimetic octopus tentacles, achieving an exosome isolation efficiency of 90.4%. The innovative design incorporates interwoven, 3D micropathways, enha

B-esterases characterisation in the digestive tract of the common octopus and the European cuttlefish and their in vitro responses to contaminants of environmental concern.

Cephalopods are a group of marine invertebrates that have received little attention as sentinel species in comparison to other molluscs, such as bivalves. Consequently, their physiological and biochemical xenobiotic metabolism responses are poorly understood. Here we undertake a comparative analysis of the enzymatic activities involved in detoxification reactions and neural transmission in the digestive tract of two commercial cephalopods: the Common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, and the European cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis. For methodological purposes, several common B-esterases (five carboxyl

Octopus arms exhibit exceptional flexibility.

The octopus arm is often referred to as one of the most flexible limbs in nature, yet this assumption requires detailed inspection given that this has not been measured comprehensively for all portions of each arm. We investigated the diversity of arm deformations in Octopus bimaculoides with a frame-by-frame observational analysis of laboratory video footage in which animals were challenged with different tasks. Diverse movements in these hydrostatic arms are produced by some combination of four basic deformations: bending (orally, aborally; inward, outward), torsion (clockwise, counter-clock

Patterns of arm muscle activation involved in octopus reaching movements.

The extreme flexibility of the octopus arm allows it to perform many different movements, yet octopuses reach toward a target in a stereotyped manner using a basic invariant motor structure: a bend traveling from the base of the arm toward the tip (Gutfreund et al., 1996a). To study the neuronal control of these movements, arm muscle activation [electromyogram (EMG)] was measured together with the kinematics of reaching movements. The traveling bend is associated with a propagating wave of muscle activation, with maximal muscle activation slightly preceding the traveling bend. Tonic activation

Characterization of nitric oxide in Octopus maya nervous system and its potential role in sensory perception.

The role of nitric oxide as a neurotransmitter in the olfactory and chemoreception systems of invertebrates has been well documented. This suggests an early and efficient sensory detection system that is evolutionarily preserved in various species, including vertebrates and invertebrates. Additionally, the presence of a nitric oxide neurotransmitter system has been reported in molluscs, particularly in octopus species. In this work, we present evidence for the existence of nitric oxide synthase in neurons and fibers, as well as its anatomical localization in various nuclei involved in chemosen

Neurotransmission and neuromodulation systems in the learning and memory network of Octopus vulgaris.

The vertical lobe (VL) in the octopus brain plays an essential role in its sophisticated learning and memory. Early anatomical studies suggested that the VL is organized in a "fan-out fan-in" connectivity matrix comprising only three morphologically identified neuron types; input axons from the median superior frontal lobe (MSFL) innervating en passant millions of small amacrine interneurons (AMs), which converge sharply onto large VL output neurons (LNs). Recent physiological studies confirmed the feedforward excitatory connectivity; a glutamatergic synapse at the first MSFL-to-AM synaptic la

Self-recognition mechanism between skin and suckers prevents octopus arms from interfering with each other.

Controlling movements of flexible arms is a challenging task for the octopus because of the virtually infinite number of degrees of freedom (DOFs) [1, 2]. Octopuses simplify this control by using stereotypical motion patterns that reduce the DOFs, in the control space, to a workable few [2]. These movements are triggered by the brain and are generated by motor programs embedded in the peripheral neuromuscular system of the arm [3-5]. The hundreds of suckers along each arm have a tendency to stick to almost any object they contact [6-9]. The existence of this reflex could pose significant probl
