[Elevation in adduction. Relation to congenital strabismus and other types of ocular motility disorders].

This retrospective study shows the clinical data of 81 patients with elevation in adduction. The relationships between the elevation in adduction and various ocular anomalies, such as horizontal deviations, refractive errors, nystagmus, torticollis, superior oblique muscle paralysis and dissociated vertical deviation, have been studied in order to specify the clinical characteristics of this phenomenon. The age of onset of the elevation in adduction and of the dissociated vertical deviation has also been considered, and a typical temporal progression of these symptoms has been found. In this s

Magnetic resonance imaging of the posterior fossa in ocular motility disorders--four case studies.

The superiority of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the posterior fossa over x-ray computed tomography is demonstrated by four patients with neuro-ophthalmologic disorders. Advantages of this technique include lack of ionizing radiation, direct multiplanar imaging, increased sensitivity to pathology, increased tissue contrast, and no known adverse effects. It is concluded that MR, when available, should be the imaging modality of choice in patients with neuro-ophthalmologic disorders of suspected brainstem origin.

A Case of Eosinophilic Chronic Rhinosinusitis Associated with Choroidal Folds and Ocular Motility Disorder.

We report a case of eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) associated with choroidal folds and ocular motility disorder. A 50-year-old male with rhinosinusitis and bronchial asthma presented with anorthopia of the lower visual field and ocular motility disorder of the left eye. Dilated fundus examination and optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed wavy choroidal folds in the upper retina. An emergent computed tomography (CT) showed sinusitis, a partial defect of the superior wall of the orbit on the left side, and deformation of the left eye. Based on the clinical findings, the patient

Analysis of the CHN1 gene in patients with various types of congenital ocular motility disorders.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the gene CHN1 have been described in autosomal dominant Duane's retraction syndrome (DRS) and mutations have been shown to interfere with normal innervation of target eye muscles by oculomotor axons in chick embryos. We screened for CHN1 mutations in patients with various congenital ocular motility disorders. METHODS: Altogether, 29 patients with different congenital ocular motility disorders and a positive family history of congenital ocular motility disturbances or strabismus or bilateral affection or accompanying congenital disorders were enrolled in this study. A Puzzling Ocular Motility Disorder: Apparent Up-Gaze Fatigability in a Patient With Oculomotor Nerve Compression.

We report the case of a woman who developed right third nerve dysfunction with synkinesis and ocular neuromyotonia secondary to a compressive arterial aneurysm. Surprisingly, our examination showed a downward drift of the right eye in sustained up-gaze resulting in transient hypotropia, suggesting either fatigability of the superior rectus or contraction of the inferior rectus. We believe this ocular motility pattern is secondary to a co-contraction of the inferior rectus in up-gaze caused by synkinesis (explaining the downward drift), followed by failure of the inferior rectus to relax upon r

Development of a core outcome set for amblyopia, strabismus and ocular motility disorders: a review to identify outcome measures.

BACKGROUND: Core Outcome Sets (COS) are defined as the minimum sets of outcomes that should be measured and reported in all randomised controlled trials to facilitate combination and comparability of research. The aim of this review is to produce an item bank of previously reported outcome measures from published studies in amblyopia, strabismus and ocular motility disorders to initiate the development of COS. METHODS: A review was conducted to identify articles reporting outcome measures for amblyopia, strabismus and ocular motility disorders. Using systematic methods according to the COMET

[Advances in clinical and molecular genetics of congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders].

Congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDDs) are congenital non-progressive, sporadic or familial abnormalities of cranial musculature that result from developmental abnormalities of, or the complete absence of, one or more cranial nerves with primary or secondary muscle dysinnervation. These disorders include vertical disorders of ocular motility, horizontal disorders of ocular motility and disorders with abnormalities of facial motility that were previously referred to as "congenital fibrosis syndromes". The advances in clinical and molecular genetics of congenital cranial dysinnervat

Detecting Binocular Diplopia in Orbital Floor Blowout Fractures: Superiority of the Orthoptic Approach.

Background and Objectives: In patients with orbital floor blowout fracture (OFBF), accurate diagnosis of ocular motility disorder is important for decisions about conservative or surgical therapy. However, the accuracy of the traditional test for detecting binocular diplopia/ocular motility disorder using a moving pencil or finger (hereinafter, "finger test") has been generally accepted as correct and has not been subject to scrutiny so far. Hence, its accuracy relative to full orthoptic examination is unknown. Materials and Methods: In this paper, the results of the "finger test" were compare

[Oculomotor system and multiple sclerosis].

Disorders of ocular motility due to multiple sclerosis can cause significant symptoms, such as blurred vision, diplopia, oscillopsia and dizziness. The spectrum of ocular motor disorders is broad due to the multifocal nature of the disease. The most frequent disorders include dysmetric saccades, impaired smooth pursuit, internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO), impaired vestibulo-ocular reflex, misalignment of visual axes, impaired vergence and gaze-evoked nystagmus. Patients with abnormal eye movements are more handicapped than patients without ocular motility disorders as eye movement disorders an

[An unusual case of major restriction of eye motility: severe myopia].

Severe restrictive disorders of ocular motility are rarely described in high myopia. Their cause is still unknown. Several theories have been suggested: structural changes in the ocular muscles, sixth-nerve palsy or an elongation of the ocular globe. We report the case of a 44 years old man with high myopia of the left eye and disturbed ocular motility. Medical imaging techniques (echography, CT, MRI) allowed us to objectify the cause of ocular motility problem.

[Value of the stereoscopic tests in the detection of sensorimotor anomalies in children].

Limitations and advantages of the stereotests are briefly discussed. In this trial, two stereotests (TNO and Frisby) have been tested in 3 groups of patients: group 1 was composed of 180 cases with normal binocular vision; group 2 of 312 patients with known ocular motility disorders: group 3 of 186 patients with unknown sensorimotor status. The utility of the two stereotests in detecting ocular motility disorders and/or amblyopia is uncertain when used alone. Because of a high number of false positives and false negatives the tests are best used in conjunction with other clinical tests of ocul
