Calcifying odontogenic cyst with odontogenic keratocyst: a case report and review of the literature.

The calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), first identified as a separate and distinct lesion by Gorlin et al. in 1962, is an uncommon benign lesion, consisting of a proliferation of odontogenic epithelium and scattered nests of ghost cells and calcifications that may form the lining of a cyst or present as a solid mass. The COC occurs alone or occasionally with odontomas or other odontogenic tumors, and it is this variable histology and clinical behavior that has raised the question of whether or not it is a cyst or a true neoplasm. The odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a locally aggressive odontog

Differential diagnosis between calcifying odontogenic cyst and adenomatoid odontogenic tumor by computed tomography images.

OBJECTIVES: Calcifying odontogenic cysts (COC) and adenomatoid odontogenic tumors (AOT) have similar radiographic findings. We examined the radiographic and computed tomography (CT) images of patients histologically diagnosed with COC or AOT and identified their characteristic findings. METHODS: The subjects included 12 patients histologically diagnosed with COC or AOT (one female and five males per group), who underwent CT at our hospital between Nov 1998 and Jun 2019. The location of the lesion, impacted tooth, bone expansion, root resorption, tooth migration, calcified body, and presence o

Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst Associated With Dentigerous Cyst in a 15-Year-Old Girl.

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a rare odontogenic cyst with ameloblastic epithelial lining containing clusters of ghost cells. COCs have been described in association with several odontogenic tumors, more commonly odontomas and rarely with dentigerous cyst (DC). In this article, we describe a case of COC associated with DC in a 15-year-old girl, who presented with a swelling on the right middle third of the face, producing facial asymmetry. Panoramic radiography showed a well-circumscribed, corticated, and unilocular radiolucency at the level of the right maxillary sinus, involving 2 une

Computed tomographic features of calcifying odontogenic cysts.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the CT appearances of 4 cases of the calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) with particular reference to the effect of varying the window settings. METHODS: Conventional radiographs and CT scans of 4 calcifying odontogenic cysts were analyzed with respect to the presence of an impacted tooth, root resorption and calcification. In addition, increased attenuation by desquamated keratin was examined by varying the window settings on CT. RESULTS: All lesions were located in the maxilla and on conventional radiographs, had unilocular radiolucency with a well-defined margin. Cal

Peripheral calcifying odontogenic cyst in maxillary anterior gingiva: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Calcifying odontogenic cysts (Gorlin cysts) most commonly present centrally and have only rarely been reported in peripheral locations. The purpose of this report is to describe a new case of peripheral calcifying odontogenic cyst (PCOC) occurring in the anterior maxillary gingiva and to review the management and differential diagnosis of such a lesion. METHODS: A 37-year-old female presented with a long-standing submucosal nodule on the gingiva between the maxillary central incisors, with asymptomatic growth over the last three years. Following an initial incisional biopsy, a dia

Calcifying odontogenic cyst with ameloblastic fibro-odontome: one lesion or two?

The calcifying odontogenic cyst is unusual in that it is frequently found in conjunction with the histologic features of a variety of other odontogenic conditions. Two cases are reported, one of which contained areas histologically similar to the ameloblastic fibro-odontome and also showed condensations of cells in the stroma beneath epithelial strands proliferating from the cyst lining. In both cases the "ghost cells" stained strongly for disulphide groups but only occasional areas were positive for sulphydryl groups. No amyloid or "amyloid-like" material was detected. As no part of the curre

Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst Exhibiting Focal Clear Cell Change: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), commonly termed the Gorlin cyst, is a developmental odontogenic cyst characterized by "ghost cells" within its epithelial lining. The World Health Organization classifies it as a benign cystic entity with distinctive histopathological features. Although it constitutes approximately 1%-2% of odontogenic cysts and tumors, its diverse clinicopathological spectrum may complicate diagnosis. We present an unusual case of COC with clear cell changes in a 48-year-old female presenting with pain and swelling in the left posterior mandible. Radiographic evaluation reve

Multidisciplinary Case Management in Mesiodens Impacted Cases with Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst.

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a cyst originating from odontogenic epithelium and has a characteristic ghost cell appearance. Clinically, COC is characterized by asymptomatic swelling, leading to lingual expansion, tooth migration, apical resorption, and perforation of cortical bone. COC is most often asymptomatic and is often only discovered during a routine radiological examination. This case report describes the clinical interventions to manage a patient with mesiodens impacted with COC. The procedure is aimed at evaluating the multidisciplinary management of COC at Universitas Airlan

The central (intraosseous) calcifying odontogenic cyst: an analysis of 215 cases.

This study reviews and analyzes the clinical, radiographic, and histomorphologic features of the 215 cases of central calcifying odontogenic cyst (CCOC) reported in the literature. Based on the present information, a clinicopathologic classification of calcifying odontogenic cyst is proposed. The CCOC is also compared with its peripheral counterpart and the differences discussed.

Extraosseous calcifying odontogenic cyst: report of case and review of literature.

A case report of an extraosseous calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) that appeared clinically to be a reactive lesion is presented. Review of the 28 previously published extraosseous COC cases and the current case report showed a mean age of 45.2 years at the time of diagnosis. No predilection for either gender or the maxilla or mandible was ascertained. A majority (51.9%) of cases occurred between the canines and none was posterior to the first molar. Because recurrences of an extraosseous COC have not been reported, the recommended treatment for an extraosseous COC is conservative surgical exc

Calcifying odontogenic cyst combined with odontogenic keratocyst: report of a case and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Odontogenic lesions composed of two or more separate odontogenic cysts are uncommon. The calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) are odontogenic cysts that exhibit some neoplastic features. Concurrence of these lesions is extremely rare. We report a rare case of COC combined with OKC in a patient and review the relevant literature systemically. CASE PRESENTATION: In this article, we present a case report of an 18-year-old boy patient with no medical history whose chief complaint was facial asymmetry. A painless swelling in the right side

Report of Two Cases of Combined Odontogenic Tumors: Ameloblastoma with Odontogenic Keratocyst and Ameloblastic Fibroma with Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst.

Combined odontogenic neoplasms have rarely been documented. Such tumors have also been described by other researchers as "hybrid" lesions. The histologic features are often identical to other individually well-established odontogenic neoplasms such as ameloblastoma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor, ameloblastic fibroma (AF), and ameloblastic fibro-odontoma. Their clinical presentation is variable, ranging from cysts to neoplasms showing varying degrees of aggressive behavior. Most combined tumors contain features of one of the odontogenic tumors in combination with either a calcifying odontogeni

Comparative evaluation of calretinin immunohistochemical expression in calcifying odontogenic cyst and ameloblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Calretinin is a 29 kilodalton (KDa) calcium-binding protein that is expressed in normal and tumoral tissues. The expression of calretinin has been shown in the dental epithelium during odontogenesis and in different odontogenic cysts and tumors such as ameloblastoma. Since the epithelium of calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is similar to ameloblastoma and in both lesions, an arrangement of loose cells similar to stellate reticulum is seen, we aimed to investigate the comparative expression of calretinin in COC and ameloblastoma. METHODS: In this observational-analytical study, 11

Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst Associated with Complex Odontoma: Report of a Rare Case.

Calcifying odontogenic cyst, also known as Gorlin cyst is a rare benign cystic lesion primarily found in the jawbones, accounting less than 1% of odontogenic cysts. It can be associated with odontogenic tumors such as odontomas. We report a rare case of COC associated with complex odontoma in a young patient and discuss its clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment options. An 18-year-old female patient presented with a painless radiopaque lesion of the right mandibular bone at Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery department. Radiographs revealed irregular tooth-like structures in the canine-premo

Calcifying odontogenic cyst associated with compound odontoma: a study on undemineralized material.

In a minority of cases of calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) it is possible to observe the formation of dental hard tissues in the cyst wall. The use of undemineralized sections has allowed an evaluation of the mineralized tissues normally lost with the use of demineralizing agents. All the dental hard tissues presented a high degree of morpho- and histodifferentiation. The histochemical staining for calcium salts (von Kossa) showed the presence of areas of low mineralization in the portion of the lesion, where the tissue maturation was not complete. In conclusion the appearance of the dental h

Expression of hard alpha-keratins in pilomatrixoma, craniopharyngioma, and calcifying odontogenic cyst.

To examine the properties of shadow and ghost cells, 3 kinds of antibodies were raised against human hair proteins and their immunoreactivity was examined in tumors expressing those cells: pilomatrixoma, 14 cases; craniopharyngioma, 17 cases; and calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), 14 cases. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western blot analyses demonstrated that 2 polyclonal antibodies, PA-HP1 and PA-HP 2, reacted strongly with type I acidic and type II neutral/basic hard alpha-keratins. The other monoclonal antibody, MA-HP1, reacted with type II neutral/basic hard
