Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors are benign tumors, characterized by the presence of ghost cells and calcified materials. We evaluated clinical characteristics of calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors in 21 cases at the Maxillofacial Surgery, Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital, between January 1979 and December 2006. Of the 21 lesions that were studied, 12 were observed in male patients, and 9 in female patients. The median age was 13.0 years (range, 4-69 years). Of the 21 lesions, 11 were located in the maxilla (intraosseous), 9 in the mandible (intraosseous), and 1 in the lower

Mixed odontogenic tumors in the jaws of children and adolescents usually cause dentition anomalies. The typical forms of these are ameloblastic fibroma, ameloblastic fibroodontoma, complex odontoma and compound odontoma. In the present study mixed odontogenic tumor cases are presented in patients under 20 years of age. All of them were associated with tooth eruption disturbances. Further aim of this study was to discuss the nature and interrelationships of this group of lesions. Ameloblastic fibromas (AFs) are true, mixed, soft tissue neoplasms, deriving from the proliferation of both odontoge

Ameloblastic fibromas (AFs) are true, mixed, soft tissue neoplasms, deriving from the proliferation of both odontogenic epithelium and mesenchyma. They have a potential for both recurrence and malignant transformation. Ameloblastic fibroodontomas (AFOs) may be regarded as hamartomas, which exhibit epithelial, mesenchymal, and abundant hard tissue components of the developing teeth. Odontomas are calcifying benign ha

Hyperplastic follicular tissue and a dentigerous cyst are the two most common entities associated with the crown of an impacted tooth. However, other diagnostic possibilities, including odontogenic tumors should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of a pericoronal radiolucency. This article presents three cases of radiolucent lesions that were histologically diagnosed as an odontogenic tumor, and stresses the importance of histological evaluation of all pericoronal radiolucencies.

The dental follicle is radiographically and histologically observed in association with unerupted or impacted teeth. However, this normal tissue structure is often confused with odontogenic tumors by pathologists with limited experience in evaluating jaw lesions. This study was designed to evaluate the incidence and possible reasons for incorrect interpretation of dental follicles. From 1970 to 1988, 847 dental follicles and/or dental papillas from 663 patients were submitted to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) by medical pathologists seeking diagnostic consultation. Nearly 84% o

The adenomatoid odontogenic tumor is a rare benign neoplasm. It can, however, have locally aggressive behavior. This is a case of an adenomatoid odontogenic tumor of unusual location and behavior in a 15-year-old female patient. A panoramic radiograph revealed a large radiolucent lesion involving the retained tooth 33. Teeth involved in this lesion were displaced and with apparent root resorption. A prototype of the mandible showed a marked expansion of cortical bone, fenestration points in the lingual cortex, and fragility of the base of the mandible. Therefore, because of the risk of postope

Combined odontogenic neoplasms have rarely been documented. Such tumors have also been described by other researchers as "hybrid" lesions. The histologic features are often identical to other individually well-established odontogenic neoplasms such as ameloblastoma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor, ameloblastic fibroma (AF), and ameloblastic fibro-odontoma. Their clinical presentation is variable, ranging from cysts to neoplasms showing varying degrees of aggressive behavior. Most combined tumors contain features of one of the odontogenic tumors in combination with either a calcifying odontogeni

Calretinin is expressed primarily in the central and peripheral nervous system and extensively studied in colon adenocarcinoma and mesotheliomas. Calretinin is known to be expressed in the odontogenic epithelium and odontogenic tumors. However, the role of calretinin in the pathogenesis of odontogenic tumors is yet to be confirmed. Hence, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the expression and role of calretinin in selected odontogenic tumors. The study included 30 ameloblastomas, 30 adenomatoid odontogenic tumors, and 30 keratocystic odontogenic tumors. Staining intensity, pattern, an

Benign odontogenic tumors are characterized by imaging findings of expansile growth and well-defined margins with smooth borders, and their appearance is very similar to that of odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts. From the viewpoint of diagnostic imaging of odontogenic tumors, teeth are designed differently according to their origin from the apex or crown. Therefore, for differential diagnosis, it is necessary to select diagnostic methods that make it possible to evaluate these findings in detail. Intraoral and panoramic radiography are highly effective in examining the relationship between

OBJECTIVE: To describe and analyze recurrent pattern of KOTs according to time.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective chart study evaluated histologically confirmed nonsyndromic keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KOT) treated at our institutions between 1975 and 2012.
RESULTS: Mean age at time of diagnosis was 48 years, and male/female ratio was 1.8:1. The typical nonsyndromic KOT lesion was most often found in the posterior mandible, had radiographically smooth borders, and was associated with symptoms and clinical findings, perforated bone, with a thin capsule. Anterior jaw KOT were found more fr

Most odontogenic tumors occurring in rats have the appearance of immature or mature odontomas. The present brief paper describes two spontaneously occurring odontogenic lesions in rats; both had the appearance of complex odontomas. One was associated with a lesion that had the appearance of an odontogenic fibroma; the other occurred concomitant with a lesion that had the appearance of a cementoblastoma. Their possible relationship with disturbed eruption due to malocclusion is discussed.

Immunohistochemical localization of two enamel proteins, amelogenin and enamelin, in comparison with that of keratin, was determined in odontogenic tumors and the allied lesions in order to verify functional differentiation of the tumor cells as ameloblasts. Amelogenin and enamelin were demonstrated in small mineralized foci and in the tumor cells surrounding them in adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT), calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT), and calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC). Hyaline droplets in AOT showed positive staining for both enamel proteins. These mineralized and hyaline m

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT), or the Pindborg tumor, is very rare neoplasm, which accounts up to 1% of all odontogenic tumors. These tumors involve mandible almost twice as common as the maxillary bone, mostly in the premolar and molar region and present at first with local swelling. There is no gender predilection and the tumor usually appears between 2nd and 6th decade of life. We report the case of a 36-year-old male patient with a Pindborg tumor in the maxillary region on the right side, also involving the adjacent maxillary sinus, with destroying of the local anatomical
