BACKGROUND: Adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa are at risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and unintended pregnancies. Observational studies suggest that injectable hormonal contraceptives (HCs) increase the HIV risk, although their effects on genital inflammation, particularly HIV-susceptible T-helper 17 (Th17) cells, are unknown. In a randomized crossover study, the effect of injectable norethisterone oenanthate (NET-EN), combined contraceptive vaginal rings (CCVR; NuvaRing), and combined oral contraceptive pills (COCPs) on cervical Th17 cells and cytokines were compared.

Hemlock water dropwort (Oenanthe crocata) is probably the most poisonous plant in the British Isles. The roots are the most toxic part of the plant and have been eaten in mistake for the roots of several other plant species with often fatal results. A recent nonfatal case of poisoning is reported and previous cases reviewed. Present evidence suggests that barbiturates, particularly short-acting agents are life saving and are the drugs of choice in the treatment of the convulsions.

Three adult males presented with gynaecomastia, small testes and clinical features of androgen deficiency after treatment with alkylating agents. A total of 387 women with severe climacteric complaints were treated for a period of 4 years with a new combined hormone preparation containing 200 mg DHEAO (dehydroepiandrosterone oenanthate) and 4 mg oestradiol valerate in 1 ml oily solution. A combination of oestriol and testosterone oenanthate was tried in 14 different indications on 110 dogs and 5 cats of both sexes. Fasciola hepatica is a trematode that causes zoonosis mainly in cattle and sheep and occasionally in humans. Fascioliasis has been reported in Korea; however, determining F. hepatica infection in snails has not been done recently. The effects of exogenous testosterone on the haemostatic system were studied in a group of 32 healthy men undergoing a clinical trial of hormonal male contraception. The men received 200 mg testosterone oenanthate (TE) weekly i.m., and plasma samples were taken pretreatment, at defined time points up to 52 weeks of treatment, and 4 and 8 weeks after discontinuing TE.
