BACKGROUND: Errors in the preanalytical phase in clinical laboratories affect patient safety. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of intensive educational efforts together with external quality assessment (EQA) of the preanalytical phase from 2013 to 2015 to improve patient identification in primary health care in Norway. In addition, routines for venous and capillary blood sampling were investigated.
METHODS: A preanalytical EQA was circulated in 2013 by the Norwegian Quality Improvement of Laboratory Examinations (Noklus) to general practitioner offices and nursing homes (n=200

OBJECTIVE: Guidelines for office blood pressure (BP) measurements recommend two or more readings at each visit. It has been suggested that discarding the first reading may improve the diagnostic utility of office readings. We compare two methods of office BP measurement to determine whether discarding the first BP affects their association with ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) readings.
METHODS: We studied measurements in 313 mildly hypertensive patients (181 men, median age 51 years) at the end of the washout phase of a hypertension treatment trial. All patients had three ausculta

This study explored Magnet Chief Nursing Officers' cues-to-action initiating lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT)-specific policies. Homonegativity has a negative effect on employee recruitment and retention and patient satisfaction. Little has been known about what cues-to-action might initiate LGBT inclusive training. Surveys were mailed to 343 Chief Nursing Officers. Cues-to-action survey was used to assess what inspires initiation of LGBT training. Demographic surveys were used to assess what impact variables might have on cues-to-action. Age, sex, religiosity, location, and regio

INTRODUCTION: Daily in-hand medication dispensing in prisons and jails is resource intensive, disempowering, and nonconfidential. This research aimed to assess a nurse-initiated, low-frequency medication dispensing system using personal lockable boxes.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a Swiss prison involving 47 box users and 19 custodial officers.
FINDINGS: Box users agreed or strongly agreed about the perceived advantages of the box system, including user-friendliness, lower theft risk, and increased dignity, confidentiality, compliance, and autonomy to self-manage medic

BACKGROUND: Potentially modifiable cancer risk factors have been increasingly recognized among the Chinese population. In this study, we aimed to investigate the perceived significance of these risk factors among senior nursing officers, who play a crucial role in providing healthcare services. We also sought to determine senior nursing officers' performance in reducing these risk factors.
METHODS: A questionnaire survey regarding 23 potentially modifiable cancer risk factors was conducted in November 2023 with 58 senior nursing officers at Taizhou Hospital in Zhejiang Province, China. The co

BACKGROUND: The community corrections population in Australia shares similar risk factors for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection with people incarcerated in prisons, but without access to prison-based testing and treatment. While hepatitis C testing and treatment programs are well established in prison settings in Australia, little attention has been paid to equivalent programs in community corrections settings. C No More is a study to evaluate the acceptability and efficacy of a novel, mobile, nurse and peer-led model of hepatitis C testing and treatment at community corrections offices in Mel

The American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) convened a dialogue among a group of chief nursing officer (CNO)-chief financial officer (CFO) dyads, with support from the Healthcare Financial Management Association. An AONL subcommittee used the dialogue results to develop guiding principles to assist leaders in creating and strengthening CNO-CFO partnerships. This work suggests that leaders can approach the CNO-CFO relationship as strategic rather than transactional. As nurse executives strengthen leadership competencies, they can build trust, engage finance partners early, create sh

Students visit school health offices with a variety of complaints, and while some may be minor, others may be more pressing. The challenge for the school nurse is being able to differentiate between the two. This article features a case study of a fourth-grade elementary student who presented to the school nurse with a sudden onset of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a rapid cardiac arrhythmia that originates above the ventricles in the heart. The student's complaint was a "racing heart," and it was her first time experiencing a cardiac episode. It was also the school nurse's first time enc

Current legislation does not permit the administration of first line resuscitation medications by suitably qualified Division 1 registered nurses (RNs) in the absence of a medical officer. This omission by the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act 1981 (Vic) and the Drugs, Poisons and The Controlled Substances Regulations 1995 (Vic) leaves many critical care nurses in a vulnerable legal position. The primary aim of this study was to gauge the view of critical care nurses with respect to lobbying for change to the current legislation. In addition, the study aimed to explore and describe

During the course of field observations for an ethnographic study of home care nurses' job stress, Hurricane Hugo struck the community, causing extensive damage. The nurses' office building was heavily damaged by wind and water, and their office was not habitable for almost a week. The author had observed the nurses' work practices over 10 weeks before the hurricane. In the aftermath of the storm, the nurses were simultaneously disaster victims and caregivers for other victims. They experienced grief, anger, and frustration about their losses, as well as conflict between their family- and work

At the inception of a general practice well child clinic, a checklist card was introduced into the clinic notes to summarize specific and relative contraindications to immunizations. This card was used by the practice nurses as they ran the immunization procedures during the clinic. A failure on the checklist led to a consultation with the clinic doctor who decided whether to proceed with the immunization. Of 155 immunizations given during the six-month period, only 23 (15%) failed the checklist and required the child to be assessed by the clinic doctor. Of these, nine (39%) were for simple up

OBJECTIVES: The monthly injectable contraceptive is usually administered in the office. We aimed to compare home self-injection with office administration with respect to satisfaction, compliance, and time and money spent on contraceptive behavior.
METHODS: We enrolled 16 subjects and taught them self-injection for a prospective cohort trial with crossover. Subjects performed three self-injections at home and then had three office injections by the nurse.
RESULTS: Ten subjects completed the protocol. They reported similarly low pain and anxiety with nurse injections and self-injections. Wome

BACKGROUND: Automated measurement of blood pressure (BP) in designated BP kiosks have in recent years been introduced in primary care. If kiosk blood pressure (BP) monitoring provides results equivalent to in-office BP or daytime ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM), follow-up of adult patients could be managed primarily by self-checks. We therefore designed a comparative trial and evaluated the diagnostic performance of kiosk- and office-based BP (nurse- versus physician-measured) compared with daytime ABPM.
METHODS: A trial of automated BP monitoring in three settings: a designated BP kiosk, by
