Redescription of the earthworm Moniligaster gravelyi Stephenson, 1915 (Clitellata, Moniligastridae) based on recent collections from Kerala state, India.

Earthworms of the genus Moniligaster Perrier, 1872 can be distinguished from other genera of the family Moniligastridae by the presence of spermathecal atrial glands. Moniligaster gravelyi Stephenson, 1915 has so far been known only from a single specimen, and it is the only species with supposed single spermathecal atrial gland in the genus. Hence, this species has been a subject to some taxonomic confusion. Here, M. gravelyi is redescribed from new material collected and illustrated for the first time. The current study expanded its description and provided a more comprehensive taxonomic cha

Native earthworms and roe deer in temperate forests: Friends in the sun, foes in the shade.

Given increasing deer populations and rising canopy openness through tree mortality in European forests, understanding how these changes affect above-belowground communities and ecosystem functioning is becoming more important. Earthworms comprise the largest animal biomass in European forest soils and play a central role in decomposition, carbon and nutrient cycling, and soil formation. However, their responses to canopy openness and deer browsing have been studied almost exclusively in northern North America, where interactions involve white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mainly no

Two new Mesenchytraeus species (Annelida: Clitellata: Enchytraeidae) from Changbai Mountain, China.

The Changbai Mountain in northeast China harbours a species-rich enchytraeid fauna, and ca. 50 species of 11 genera have been reported so far from its well-preserved ecosystems. Herein, we add two new species of Mesenchytraeus into this enchytraeid list. Both members belong to the lineage of Mesenchytraeus with enlarged ventral chaetae. Mesenchytraeus spermatoglomeratus sp. nov. is characterized by the presence of enlarged chaetae in V-VI and XI (2 per bundle), five pairs of preclitellar nephridia (VI/VII-X/XI), sperm sacs containing curly ball-shaped sperm bundles, spermathecae without divert

On the lifespan of Enchytraeus crypticus - impact of iron (nanomaterial and salt) on aging.

Iron oxide nanomaterials (Fe3O4 NMs) have important biomedical and environmental applications, e.g. drug delivery, chemotherapy, magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents, etc. However, the environmental risks of such Fe3O4 are not fully assessed, particularly for soil living invertebrates, which are among the ones in the first line of exposure. Research has showed that longer-term exposure time is required to assess hazards of NMs, not predicted when based on shorter time and are therefore recommended. Thus, in the present study the effects of Fe3O4 NMs and FeCl3 were assessed in the terrest

Effects of soil biofumigation on non-target springtails (Collembola) and earthworms (Opisthopora).

Soil health is supported by diverse communities of organisms, including springtails and earthworms, facilitating essential processes such as nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, and soil structure maintenance. Cultural control methods promoted through Integrated Pest Management (IPM) are often assumed to be environmentally friendly, and their potential effects on soil health have received limited attention. Biofumigation, a cultural tactic, utilizes cruciferous plants like Brassica juncea (Brassicales: Brassicaceae), or their byproducts, to control soil-borne pests, yet their impact

Effects of tire particles on earthworm (Eisenia andrei) fitness and bioaccumulation of tire-related chemicals.

Tire and Road Wear Particles (TRWP) are produced during the wear of tire rubber on the road pavement and contain various chemicals originating from the road environment and from the rubber. Toxic effects of TRWP and their associated chemicals on soil organisms remain poorly characterized. In a series of laboratory experiments, this study investigated the bioaccumulation kinetics of several common tire-related chemicals in the earthworm species Eisenia andrei using Cryogenically Milled Tire Tread (CMTT), as a surrogate for environmental TRWP. Effects on survival, growth, reproductive output and

Increased phenanthrene toxicity to Eisenia fetida upon co-exposure to o-xylene.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) compounds are often found in contaminated soil and have been shown to be toxic to the ecosystem, but their combined environmental risks and ecological effects remain poorly understood. Herein, Eisenia fetida was exposed to phenanthrene (PHE) and o-xylene (OX) in artificial soil to assess their toxic effects (including mortality, reproduction, antioxidant enzyme activities, and malondialdehyde levels) and bioaccumulation. The 48 h LC50 values for single contaminated PHE and OX were 71.6 and 121 mg kg-1

New genus of Lumbriculidae (Annelida, Clitellata) from a karst spring in the Cantabrian Mountains, northern Spain.

The groundwater worms of the family Lumbriculidae exhibit high diversity and endemism in southern Europe. All stygobiont lumbriculid species known so far in this region belong to six genera. In the present study, a new stygobiont lumbriculid Fendia cantabrica n. gen. n. sp. is described, mainly based on distinct characteristics of the male duct structure. The male duct is semiprosoporous and the spermathecae (two pairs) are postatrial, starting in the ovarian segment. These characteristics are shared with only two lumbriculid genera: the Nearctic Eremidrilus and Holarctic Trichodrilus. The new

Experimental evaluation of herbivory on live plant seedlings by the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris L. in the presence and absence of soil surface litter.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggested that the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris might act as a seedling predator by ingesting emerging seedlings, and individuals were observed damaging fresh leaves of various plant species in the field. To evaluate the significance of herbivore behavior of L. terrestris for plant and earthworm performance we exposed 23- to 33-days-old seedlings of six plant species to earthworms in two microcosm experiments. Plants belonged to the three functional groups grasses, non-leguminous herbs, and legumes. Leaf damage, leaf mortality, the number of leaves as well as morta

A novel technology for separating live earthworm from vermicompost: Experiment, mechanism analysis, and simulation.

The vermicomposting is widely acknowledged as an effective and sustainable biological technology to dispose large scale organic solid waste such as livestock manure, crop residues and municipal sludge. The scale of vermicomposting has constantly increased over recent years due to high market demand for live earthworms. Rapid and efficient extraction and harvesting earthworm from large-scale vermicompost has become a bottle-neck problem at the end of vermicomposting. Currently, most earthworm separation is done manually or relies on simple tools, and is therefore low efficient, time consuming a

Chaetogaster limnaei K von Baer 1872 on Lymnaea tomentosa: ingestion of Fasciola hepatica cercariae.

The fresh water mollusc, Lymnaea tomentosa, the intermediate host of the liver fluke is heavily infested under natural conditions with ectocommensal annelid, Chaetogaster limnaei. These annelids which destroy the larval stages of Fasciola hepatica have been observed in the laboratory. The association of C. limnaei with the snail intermediate host is of value in exploiting a control measure against economically important liver fluke disease.

Study on the regulatory mechanism of the earthworm microbial community in vitro and in vivo under cadmium stress.

In this paper, cadmium (Cd) stress tests were performed on Eisenia fetida in sterile artificial soil, and its regulatory mechanism between microbial communities in vivo and in vitro after Cd stress was explored. In the test, 0, 50, 100, 125, 250 and 500 mg kg-1 Cd stress concentrations were implemented. After long-term and short-term stress, the microbes in the earthworms and the soil were cultured with ECO plates. The data statistics of carbon source utilization intensity were carried out using the method developed by our team. CCA was scientifically integrated into TOPSIS to establish a new

Potential Ecological Risks of the Novel Alternative Plasticizer Di(isononyl)cyclohexane-1,2-Dicarboxylate via Metabolic Toxification in Earthworms.

As legislative regulations on traditional plasticizers have been tightened globally, diisononyl cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH) gains widespread use owing to its environmental safety claims. Nevertheless, the emerging toxicological evidence raises concerns about its health and ecological risks. In soil earthworms, the dynamic bioaccumulation, biotransformation, and tissue-specific distribution of DINCH were first characterized using mass spectrometry imaging, and the major metabolites of monoisononyl cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (MINCH) and hydroxylated derivatives were primarily distri

Effects of environmentally relevant mixtures of microplastics on soil organisms.

Soil ecosystems are considered important sinks for microplastics (MPs). However, the effects of environmentally relevant mixtures of MPs on soil organisms have rarely been assessed. This study aimed to evaluate the chronic effects of a mixture of MPs on two model soil organisms, the earthworm Eisenia andrei and the springtail Folsomia candida. The MP mixture was composed of polymers and shapes frequently found in agricultural soils amended with sewage sludge, including high-density polyethylene and polypropylene fragments, and polyester fibers. The organisms were exposed in LUFA 2.2 soil to MP

Carbamazepine-exposed earthworms are characterized by tissue-specific accumulation patterns and transcriptional profiles.

Pharmaceutically active compounds enter soils via wastewater reuse and biosolid application. A ubiquitous drug present in wastewater is carbamazepine, a frequently prescribed anti-convulsant. Its mode of action is not species-specific and affects the nervous system of non-target organisms, including most likely the soil dwelling earthworms, which in turn has the potential to negatively impact soil quality. In this project, soils were amended with carbamazepine to explore uptake dynamics and resultant changes in molecular and life cycle endpoints of earthworms (Dendrobaena veneta). Earthworms w

Unveiling resilience: coelomic fluid bacteria's impact on plant metabolism and abiotic stress tolerance.

Earthworms' coelomic fluid (CF) has been discovered to possess properties that promote plant development. In particular, the earthworm's coelomic fluid-associated bacteria (CFB) are the primary factor influencing the plants' response. To investigate this, we used bacteria isolated from the CF and selected based on different plant growth-promoting traits, in a mesocosm ecosystem that includes plants. This experiment aimed to assess their impact on the metabolism of plants growing under abiotic stress environments (alkaline soil and nitrogen (N), phosphate (P), and potassium (K) deficit) and com

Earthworm species in native and planted forests in Brazil.

Over 150 species of earthworms are known from the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest, but many more are expected to live in this megadiverse biome. In the present study, we evaluated earthworm species occurrence and diversity in native and reforested areas in four National Forests in three Brazilian states: Três Barras National Forest (Santa Catarina), Irati and Piraí do Sul National Forests (Paraná) and Capão Bonito National Forest (São Paulo) using formalin and hand sorting methods. A total of 13 species were found, five exotic and eight natives (of which four were new, undescribed species), belo

Improving earthworm quality and complex metal removal from water by adding aquatic plant residues to cattle manure.

Vermicomposting is an economical and environmentally friendly process. However, related knowledge of vermicomposting aquatic plant residues (APRs), earthworm quality, and mechanisms for metal removal from water is still lacking. Nelumbo and Oenanthe javanica residues and their mixture were treated with Eisenia foetida and cattle manure for 45 days. Compared with the control comprising only cattle manure, addition of the APR mixture improved earthworm quality, mainly for low crude ash, high alkaloid compounds and different fat compositions in the Nelumbo residue and the balanced protein proport

Isolation and characterization of alarm pheromone from electric shock-induced earthworm secretion.

Electric stimulation of earthworms, Lumbricus terrestris, causes secretion of a yellow mucus which has alarm properties for conspecifics and chemoattractive properties for garter snakes. An alarm pheromone was isolated and purified to homogeneity from the mucus by means of permeation, thin-layer and high performance liquid chromatographies. The purified substance was highly active as an alarm chemosignal to earthworms (L. terrestris), but it did not elicit alarm responses from either sandworms (Nereis virens) or bloodworms (Glycera debranciata). It was not a snake chemoattractant. The alarm ph
