Workers involved in hospital operating room cleaning face numerous constraints that may lead to musculoskeletal disorders. This study aimed to perform physical ergonomic assessments on hospital staff by combining a continuous assessment (RULA) based on inertial measurement units with video coding. Eight participants performed cleaning tasks while wearing IMUs and being video recorded. A subjective evaluation was performed through the Nordic questionnaire. Global RULA scores equaled 4.21 ± 1.15 and 4.19 ± 1.20 for the right and left sides, respectively, spending most of the time in the RULA ran

Operating room personnel are exposed to biological hazards such as needlestick injuries and blood and body fluid exposure, which pose risks of bloodborne infections. However, many of these incidents remain unreported. Underreporting is driven by normalization of exposure, fear of blame, workload, and limited knowledge of reporting procedures. This leads to underestimation of occupational risk and weakens prevention strategies. Improving reporting systems, education, and institutional support is essential to enhance occupational safety in perioperative settings.

OBJECTIVE: To make an initial assessment of the attitudes and knowledge of Mexican general surgeons regarding sustainable operating rooms and net zero policies. Operating rooms are the primary producers of greenhouse gas emissions in the healthcare system. The implementation of measures to achieve sustainable operating rooms must be preceded by an understanding of current practices, the surgical staff's interest in the topic, and potential areas of opportunity.
METHODS: Observational, prospective, cross-sectional study based on an anonymous virtual survey distributed by email to all members o

Surgical site infections (SSIs) remain a significant complication in modern healthcare, particularly in orthopaedic surgery, where implants carry potential risk of contamination with biofilm formation. Traditional disinfection methods, such as chemical agents or ultraviolet-C (UVC) devices, carry limitations and may not ensure consistent and comprehensive anti-microbial effects. To this end, a novel technology UVCeed, an advanced disinfection system integrating artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and gamification, offers a promising solution to improve infection control withi

Ventilation systems in operating rooms have high importance, as they simultaneously are important for patient and personnel safety. However, conventional ventilation systems laminar air flow and mixing ventilation show disadvantages, e.g., the first leads to discomfort of the staff because of high draught risks and the latter improves lateral transport of contaminations. In this study, a concept that introduces additional air inlets for local horizontal ventilation in the vicinity of the operation table combined with these conventional systems is tested in experiments. The impact on the remova

This paper presents the design and development of the Air Quality Detection and Safety-Targeted Instrument (ADESTI), a portable smart instrument for monitoring air quality in surgical operating rooms. The system is motivated by the need to detect deviations in oxygen concentration. Such deviations can indicate gas supply leakage or ventilation failure, which are safety concerns during surgical and anesthesia procedures. ADESTI integrates three gas sensors, namely an electrochemical oxygen sensor, a Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) carbon dioxide sensor, and an electrochemical carbon monoxide sen

The connected operating room captures, transmits, and displays data, but it does not learn. This perspective presents Chirurgie 4.0 (C40), a French-led initiative born within the Commission Innovation of the Académie nationale de chirurgie, which proposes not only a concept but a method for the safe adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in surgery. At its core is the C40 Maturity Model of the Operating Room, a human-governed "surgical world model" describing the transition from the Smart OR to the Learning OR across six levels, from the conventional operating room to a sovereign, federated

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present article reviews the literature on anaphylactic reactions occurring in the operating room setting. The causes of anaphylaxis are discussed along with the clinical features, treatment and appropriate follow-up for patients who experience this reaction.
RECENT FINDINGS: Anaphylaxis in the operating room can be caused by IgE-mediated reactions, non-IgE-mediated immunologic reactions as well as nonimmunologic reactions. The most common causes are neuromuscular blocking agents and latex, followed by antibiotics and other induction medications. Reactions may present wi

Many factors may contribute to producing a shock state within the surgical environment. The classic causes of shock--hypovolemia, cardiac failure, and sepsis--occur commonly in the operating room. Additionally, concurrent surgery and anesthesia may contribute to produce clinical shock. Surgery may produce hypovolemia from "third space" loss and/or from blood loss. Some anesthetic drugs, by inhibiting the autonomic nervous system, impair the body's ability to compensate for hypovolemia, cardiac failure, or sepsis. Other entities such as tension pneumothorax, drug allergy, or mechanical factors

In recent years, many studies have characterized ambient exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) in various environments. In hospitals, operating rooms accommodate many professionals for extended periods, often with waiting times during which mobile devices connected to wireless networks are used. These conditions could increase workers' exposure during surgical procedures. This study aimed to characterize ambient RF-EMF exposure during surgical operations in 15 operating rooms at the General University Hospital and the Perpetuo Socorro Hospital in Albacete (Spain). Measurem

Delays in operating room start times lead to inefficiencies, decreased patient satisfaction, and significant hospital costs. FCOTS (first case on-time start) is a widely used performance metric, yet interventions to improve it remain understudied in VA settings. The 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX) model was implemented to target an 85% on-time start rate. Weekly FCOTS data from January to December 2023 were analyzed using statistical process control charts, and causes of delays were reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel. Among 1467 first-start cases, baseline FCOTS rates averaged 76% (weeks 1
