BACKGROUND: Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) remains a leading global cause of mortality, with multiple established risk factors. While smoking is widely recognized, opium use poses a significant health concern, particularly in developing nations. Despite traditional beliefs suggesting potential cardioprotective effects, growing evidence indicates a detrimental impact of opium consumption on cardiovascular health. This study aimed to investigate the association between opium dependence and the clinical outcomes of patients experiencing ACS.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: This study, conducted on 165 pati

BACKGROUND: The relationship between substance use and sleep is bidirectional. Substance use directly causessleep disturbances, and sleep problems are a critical factor in substance-use relapse.
METHODS: This study evaluated sleep disorders in 65 methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) patients, and61 opium-dependent patients who did not receive any treatment between September 2011 and July 2012 inKermanshah, Iran. Both groups filled out the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Global SleepAssessment Questionnaire (GSAQ).
FINDINGS: Sleep disorders were remarkably similar in both groups: 7

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of opium dependency on the healing of third-degree burns in rats.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-four rats were randomly divided to experimental and control groups. In the experimental group, opium was added to the drinking water for 21 days at increasing concentrations. The control group did not receive opium. To prove dependency on opium in the rats, naloxone was injected intraperitoneally. Full-thickness burn wounds were inflicted by applying an iron cuboid preheated to 94°C to the flank of all rats for 20 s. On day 14 after burn injury,

BACKGROUND: Opioids can adversely affect sexual function by impacting the endocrine system, particularly the pituitary gland and sex hormones. While synthetic opioids have been well studied, little data exists on natural opium's impact on sexual functioning, especially in India, where it is considered an aphrodisiac. This study aims to evaluate sexual dysfunction and related factors among men who are dependent on natural opium.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 107 participants with a dependency on natural opium. The assessment included the Arizona sexual experience scale (

Relationship between glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1, OMIM: 134660) variants and the risk of drug dependency is unknown. Chronic use of illegal drugs leads to oxidative stress, which can be alleviated by cellular detoxification mechanisms. There are several polymorphisms in the GSTP1, including Ile105Val (rs1695). This polymorphism leads to an Ile105Val amino acid change and may alter the GSTP1 enzyme activity. There is no study on the association between this polymorphism and risks of heroin (HD) or opium (OD) dependency. This paper consists of two case-control studies. The first study co

OBJECTIVE: Opium is an overwhelming public health problem in some countries. Different studies have suggested this drug as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Although the effect of opium on immune system, lung disease, nephropathy, stroke, and cardiac arrhythmia has been found in different studies, its effect on postoperation complications is not clear yet. The authors conducted this study to assess the effect of opium on post operation in hospital complications among patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft.
DESIGN: The authors retrospectively analyzed the data in this stud

BACKGROUND: Chronic opium use is associated with respiratory impairment and increased risk of respiratory-related mortality. We evaluated whether a structured, breath-centred yoga programme could improve pulmonary function in men with opium dependence.
METHODS: In this single-arm pre-post feasibility study, 38 men were enrolled during a 1-month residential de-addiction programme and 30 completers (mean age 43.5 ± 12.2 years) underwent spirometry at baseline and after a month of twice-daily, instructor-led breath-based yoga (pranayama, asana-linked breathing, and relaxation). Primary outcomes

INTRODUCTION: Opioid use has been associated with neurocognitive impairments. These deficiencies play a key role in perpetuating addictive behaviors and hindering the effectiveness of motivational and cognitive treatments. Research on the cognitive effects of natural opium use is limited. This study aims to compare the neurocognitive functions of patients dependent on natural opium with those of healthy controls and examine the association of cognitive functions with clinical variables among cases.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 26 patients dependent on natural opium and 26 heal

BACKGROUND: There is still no consensus among researchers on the impact of opium dependency on cerebrovascular stenosis. Some studies suggest that opium may be a risk factor for ischemic stroke. This study compared carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and cerebrovascular reactivity between opium-dependent and healthy people.
METHODS: This case-control study was done among opium addicts at Shafa hospital in Kerman, Iran, in year 2018. People with systemic disease or who took any medicine were excluded from our study. The control group were selected from healthy non-addicted volunteers. The co
