[Morphoenzymatic changes of the optic nerve in cardiovascular diseases].

Results are described of a histological and histoenzymatic investigation of visual nerves with a history during life of acute vascular optic neuropathy. It was found that in vascular pathology of the visual nerve due to atherosclerosis, both in the involved and clinically healthy eye different degrees of visual nerve atrophy develop due to sclerotic changes in the blood vessels. The genesis of vascular lesions and atrophy of the visual nerve is to a certain degree determined by immunological changes as evidenced by infiltration of the tissues around the vessels and in the nerve fibers by immun

Review of diseases of the optic nerve, optic tract, and visual cortex: 1975-76.

The ophthalmic literature dealing with diseases of the optic nerve, the optic tracts, and the visual cortex was reviewed for the period November 1975 through November 1976. Twenty-nine papers on topics of interest to optometrists were abstracted. The main areas of interest include: papilledema and optic atrophy (with ophthalmoscopic signs of both optic atrophy and papilledema); giant-cell arteritis; papillitis; interesting malformations of the face, palate, and orbital position that occur in conjunction with microphthalmus, situs inversus, and hypoplasia and aplasia of the optic nerve; the pro

Oxidative Stress: A Suitable Therapeutic Target for Optic Nerve Diseases?

Optic nerve disorders encompass a wide spectrum of conditions characterized by the loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and subsequent degeneration of the optic nerve. The etiology of these disorders can vary significantly, but emerging research highlights the crucial role of oxidative stress, an imbalance in the redox status characterized by an excess of reactive oxygen species (ROS), in driving cell death through apoptosis, autophagy, and inflammation. This review provides an overview of ROS-related processes underlying four extensively studied optic nerve diseases: glaucoma, Leber's heredi…

The 22-kDa antigen in optic nerve and retinal diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with unexplained visual loss were evaluated for the possibility of immunologic involvement. Antibody reactions were sought that might identify a common indication of retinal hypersensitivity. METHODS: The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blot analysis were used to identify autoantibody reactions with retina and optic nerve components. Comparisons were made with the autoantibody reaction of normal subjects and patients with recognized forms of retinal decay: macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic retinopathy, and paraneoplastic retinopathy

Nutrition and optic nerve disease.

The syndrome characterized by papillomacular bundle damage, central or cecocentral scotoma, and reduction of color vision can be produced by toxic, nutritional, or hereditary causes. Patients who present with such a picture should be evaluated for toxic sources such as tobacco or alcohol use. Nutritional deficiencies must be considered and a good family history should be obtained to explore hereditary factors. DNA mutation analysis is available to detect genetic abnormalities. A trial of nutritional replacement may be advisable even in the face of normal laboratory values. Previous reports hav

Artificial Intelligence for Screening of Multiple Retinal and Optic Nerve Diseases.

IMPORTANCE: The lack of experienced ophthalmologists limits the early diagnosis of retinal diseases. Artificial intelligence can be an efficient real-time way for screening retinal diseases. OBJECTIVE: To develop and prospectively validate a deep learning (DL) algorithm that, based on ocular fundus images, recognizes numerous retinal diseases simultaneously in clinical practice. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This multicenter, diagnostic study at 65 public medical screening centers and hospitals in 19 Chinese provinces included individuals attending annual routine medical examinations an

Optic nerve sheath fenestration for visual impairment in cerebral venous diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Visual impairment is the most common clinical feature of cerebral venous sinus occlusion or cerebral venous thrombosis-induced intracranial hypertension, which can result in optic atrophy, leading to irreversible vision loss, visual field defections, and finally, permanent blindness. Papilledema is a typical early pathophysiological alteration in visual impairment. Optic nerve sheath fenestration (ONSF) has become increasingly accepted as an option to prevent or halt progressive visual loss owing to its low risk and complications. The objective of this study is to review the latest

[Use of transconjunctival electroimpulse therapy in diseases of the optic nerve].

Seventy-one patients with optic nerve abnormalities of different origin were treated using transconjunctival electrostimulation of the eyeball with electrodes positioned in the ciliary body projection. A positive effect was attained, particularly manifest in the acute period of optic nerve diseases (neuritis, anterior ischemic neuropathy) and in involvement of the optic nerve in glaucoma patients. The results were assessed from the principal parameters of visual function, intraocular pressure, data of hydrodynamic and electrophysiological studies.

Electrophysiological assessment of optic nerve disease.

The electrophysiological findings in optic nerve and primary ganglion cell dysfunction are reviewed. The value of the pattern reversal visual-evoked potential (VEP) in the diagnosis of optic nerve disease, and the pattern appearance VEP in the demonstration of the intracranial misrouting associated with albinism, are discussed. The pattern electroretinogram (PERG) is used in the direct assessment of ganglion cell function. The use of PERG or multifocal electroretinography (mfERG), to enable the distinction between VEP delay due to optic nerve disease and that due to macular dysfunction, is des

Gene therapy for optic nerve disease.

OBJECTIVE: Molecular breast imaging (MBI) is a supplemental screening modality consistently demonstrating incremental cancer detection over mammography alone; however, its lengthy duration may limit widespread utilization. The study purpose was to assess feasibility of an abbreviated MBI protocol, providing readers with mediolateral oblique (MLO) projections only and assessing performance in lesion detection and localization. METHODS: Retrospective IRB-exempt blinded reader study administered to 5 fellowship-trained breast imaging radiologists. Independent reads performed for 124 screening MB

The pattern electroretinogram in optic nerve disease.

Pattern evoked electroretinograms (PERG), diffuse flash electroretinograms (ERG) and visual evoked potentials were studied in patients with unilateral optic nerve disease. Patients with Snellen acuities of less than 6/30 did not have recordable PERGs in their affected eye, whereas their diffuse flash ERGs were normal. The VEPs were correspondingly reduced or absent when recorded from the poorer seeing eyes. A second group of patients with Snellen acuity between 6/6 and 6/30 in the involved eye showed reductions in the mean PERG amplitude of the affected as compared with the normal eyes. All af

Application of Proteomics Analysis and Animal Models in Optic Nerve Injury Diseases.

Optic nerve damage is a common cause of blindness. Optic nerve injury is often accompanied by fundus vascular disease, retinal ganglion cell apoptosis, and changes in retinal thickness. These changes can cause alterations in protein expression within neurons in the retina. Proteomics analysis offers conclusive evidence to decode a biological system. Furthermore, animal models of optic nerve injury made it possible to gain insight into pathological mechanisms, therapeutic targets, and effective treatment of such injuries. Proteomics takes the proteome as the research object and studies protein
