The Poggendorff illusion driven by real and illusory contour: Behavioral and neural mechanisms.

The Poggendorff illusion refers to the phenomenon that the human brain misperceives a diagonal line as being apparently misaligned once the diagonal line is interrupted by two parallel edges, and the size of illusion is negatively correlated with the angle of interception of the oblique, i.e. the sharper the oblique angle, the larger the illusion. This optical illusion can be produced by both real and illusory contour. In this fMRI study, by parametrically varying the oblique angle, we investigated the shared and specific neural mechanisms underlying the Poggendorff illusion induced by real an

[Visual hallucinations and illusions, symptoms frequently misdiagnosed by the practitioner].

INTRODUCTION: Visual hallucinations or illusions are not a rare symptom. However, they are often unrecognized. Unawareness of the meaning of these symptoms often mislead both the patient and his physician. PURPOSE: To define and describe the types of visual illusions and hallucinations which can be commonly encountered in neuro-ophthalmological practice. METHODS: Overview article. RESULTS: Hallucinations are a perception not based on sensory input, whereas illusions are a misinterpretation of a correct sensory input. Both phenomenon can be due to medication or drug, or to an altered mental

Induced movement based on subtraction of motion from the inducing object.

Induced movement occurs not only when an object surrounding a stationary one moves below threshold but when it moves above threshold. The above-threshold effect is particularly puzzling and seemingly irrational because the relative displacement should be fully accounted for by perceiving the moving object in motion. The accepted theory has been that such excess motion can be explained in terms of a separation of systems: The enclosed object is governed by the relationship to its immediately surrounding frame of reference, and the latter is governed either by the relationship to its surrounding

Reduced likelihood of the Poggendorff illusion in cerebellar strokes: a clinical and neuroimaging study.

This study aimed to test our hypothesis that the cerebellum plays an important role in the generation of the optical-geometric illusion known as the Poggendorff illusion, the mechanism of which has been explained by accumulated experience with natural scene geometry. A total of 79 participants, comprising 28 patients with isolated cerebellar stroke, 27 patients with isolated cerebral stroke and 24 healthy controls, performed Poggendorff illusion tasks and 2 different control tasks. We also investigated core brain regions underpinning changes in the experience of the illusion effect using multi

A novel visual illusion paradigm provides evidence for a general factor of illusion sensitivity and personality correlates.

Visual illusions are a gateway to understand how we construct our experience of reality. Unfortunately, important questions remain open, such as the hypothesis of a common factor underlying the sensitivity to different types of illusions, as well as of personality correlates of illusion sensitivity. In this study, we used a novel parametric framework for visual illusions to generate 10 different classic illusions (Delboeuf, Ebbinghaus, Rod and Frame, Vertical-Horizontal, Zöllner, White, Müller-Lyer, Ponzo, Poggendorff, Contrast) varying in strength, embedded in a perceptual discrimination task

The role of figure orientation and apparent depth in the perception of the horizontal-vertical illusion.

An experiment was performed which examined the role of figural orientation directly, and the role of an inappropriately invoked size-constancy mechanism indirectly, in the actuation and magnitude of the horizontal-vertical illusion. When the vertical line of the stimulus figure was aligned above the horizontal line, the illusory effect was significant and positive; in contrast, when the vertical line was located below the horizontal line, the illusion was negative. Under the assumption that a vertical line can appear as a foreshortened line in depth, these findings support an explanation based

Induced motion as a function of the speed of the inducing object, measured by means of two methods.

Induced motion is illustrated by the apparent motion imparted to a stationary disc by the horizontal motion of an enclosing frame. The present study examined the effect of frame speed, with a constant extent of frame motion, on the magnitude of induced motion for average frame speeds varying from 0.17 to 2.85 deg s-1. The induced motion was measured by two methods. (i) The observer adjusted the horizontal distance between comparison posts to indicate the extent of the horizontal induced motion in a physically stationary disc. (ii) The observer adjusted the slant of a comparison rod to indicate

Broadband achromatic illusion via a transmission-reflection-integrated metasurface.

Illusion metasurfaces provide an effective route to reshape the electromagnetic signature of a physical object into that of a prescribed virtual target, but most existing designs are restricted to either reflection or transmission and suffer from large chromatic aberrations that hinder broadband operation. Here, we present a transmission-reflection-integrated metasurface (TRIM) for broadband achromatic illusion camouflage. The metasurface is implemented with a polarization-dependent multilayer meta-atom, in which resonant phase modulation and geometric phase control are cascaded to provide ful

Extraretinal and retinal amplitude and phase errors during Filehne illusion and path perception.

Pursuit eye movements give rise to retinal motion. To judge stimulus motion relative to the head, the visual system must correct for the eye movement by using an extraretinal, eye-velocity signal. Such correction is important in a variety of motion estimation tasks including judgments of object motion relative to the head and judgments of self-motion direction from optic flow. The Filehne illusion (where a stationary object appears to move opposite to the pursuit) results from a mismatch between retinal and extraretinal speed estimates. A mismatch in timing could also exist. Speed and timing e

Reduced influence of perceptual context in mild traumatic brain injury is not an illusion.

Perceptual grouping is impaired following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This may affect visual size perception, a process influenced by perceptual grouping abilities. We conducted two experiments to evaluate visual size perception in people with self-reported history of mTBI, using two different size-contrast illusions: the Ebbinghaus Illusion (Experiment 1) and the Müller-Lyer illusion (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, individuals with mTBI and healthy controls were asked to compare the size of two target circles that were either the same size or different sizes. The target circles appea

The structural basis of Felice Fontana's spiral bands and their relationship to nerve injury.

In 1779, Felice Fontana, using a six-power hand-held magnifying lens, described what appeared to be spiral bands surrounding the peripheral nerve. He hypothesized that these bands were due to an optical illusion related to the underlying undulations of the individual nerve fibers, which he was the first to observe with an early microscope. The present study examines the historical basis of Fontana's work, confirms with intrafascicular dissection that the bands are an illusion created by unstretched nerve fibers, and relates their clinical disappearance to current concepts of the pathophysiolog

Variations in Oppel-Kundt Illusion Strength Among Depressive and Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder Groups: Impact of Benzodiazepine Use.

Background and Objectives: The Oppel-Kundt (O-K) geometric optical illusion has been studied among people with mental disorders to understand the differences in their visual perception. Earlier studies were mainly focused on patients with schizophrenia, while less is known about patients with depression and the influence of medication use. The objectives were to compare illusion manifestation for schizophrenia, depression, and to evaluate possible differences depending on drug use. Materials and Methods: The stimuli consisted of three horizontally arranged dots, which were considered as termin

Age-Related Differences in Perception of the Rotating Snakes Illusion Among Young and Older Adults with Normal Visual Acuity.

PURPOSE: Visual illusions are utilized to elucidate mechanism of visual information processing. For example, the Rotating Snakes illusion creates the illusory perception of motion when viewing a static image. This study investigated the difference in perception of illusory rotation between younger and older adults with normal visual acuity. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: The participants included 105 younger adults (mean age: 23.7 years) and 100 older adults (mean age: 74.2 years). Each participant was presented with the Rotating Snakes illusion, then asked to respond whether they perceived the sn

Perception of self-motion from peripheral optokinetic stimulation suppresses visual evoked responses to central stimuli.

In a previous functional neuroimaging study we found that early visual areas deactivated when a rotating optical flow stimulus elicited the illusion of self-motion (vection) compared with when it was perceived as a moving object. Here, we investigated whether electrical cortical responses to an independent central visual probe stimulus change as a function of whether optical flow stimulation in the periphery induces the illusion of self-motion or not. Visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) were obtained in response to pattern-reversals in the central visual field in the presence of a constant periphe

[Optical hallucinations in the aged with diseases of the eye].

Two cases of Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) showing an unusual history are reported. In a 67-year-old man visual hallucinations developed 38 years after bilateral optic nerve damage due to methyl alcohol poisoning. A 78-year-old woman suffering from bilateral advanced cataract experienced visual hallucinations which ceased after improvement of vision resulting from cataract extraction. Sensory deprivation and--possibly--central neurophysiological disturbance are to be regarded as important pathogenetic factors. Signs of cerebral dysfunction which could be relevant to the pathogenesis of CBS wer

Is there a neural common factor for visual illusions?

It has been reported that the surface area of the human primary visual cortex predicts the susceptibility to several spatial contextual illusions. Yet, contrary to common belief, illusions correlate only weakly at the perceptual level, raising the question of how they can correlate with a neural measure like V1 surface area. In addition, mounting evidence suggests that there is substantial interindividual variability not only in neural function and anatomy but also in the mapping between the two, which further challenges the findings of a neural common factor for illusions. In light of these c

Intrinsic excitability of human right parietal cortex shapes the experienced visual size illusions.

Converging evidence has found that the perceived visual size illusions are heritable, raising the possibility that visual size illusions might be predicted by intrinsic brain activity without external stimuli. Here we measured resting-state brain activity and 2 classic visual size illusions (i.e. the Ebbinghaus and the Ponzo illusions) in succession, and conducted spectral dynamic causal modeling analysis among relevant cortical regions. Results revealed that forward connection from right V1 to superior parietal lobule (SPL) was predictive of the Ebbinghaus illusion, and self-connection in the

When purple perceived only at fixation: A fixation- and distance-dependent color illusion.

In this paper, an optical illusion is described in which purple elements are perceived as purple at the point of fixation, while surrounding elements of the same purple color are perceived toward a blue hue. As the viewing distance increases, a greater number of purple elements revert to a purple appearance.
