Foveal hypoplasia and optical coherence tomographic imaging.

Foveal hypoplasia is a retinal disorder in which there is a lack of full development of the morphology of the fovea. The optical coherence tomography (OCT) and functional findings are presented in relation to the underlying genetic and developmental conditions. Recent advancements of high-resolution OCT imaging have unveiled characteristics of foveal hypoplasia that were not detected by conventional imaging methods. An absence of a foveal pit does not necessarily imply poor visual acuity, and the maturation of the cone photoreceptors is important for the visual acuity. Regardless of the degree

Optical imaging of arrhythmias in tissue culture.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac cell cultures are becoming an important experimental system of minimal complexity that captures many of the salient features of myocardial tissue function and are simple enough that tissue parameters can be controlled systematically. Fundamental mechanisms that underlie normal and pathological electrophysiology at the tissue level can be studied. Of particular interest are spiral waves, which underlie many tachyarrhythmias and fibrillation. METHODS: Methods of patterned growth were used to control tissue structure, and contact fluorescence imaging was used to visualize the

Development of novel imaging probe for optical/acoustic radiation imaging (OARI).

PURPOSE: Optical/acoustic radiation imaging (OARI) is a novel imaging modality being developed to interrogate the optical and mechanical properties of soft tissues. OARI uses acoustic radiation force to generate displacement in soft tissue. Optical images before and after the application of the force are used to generate displacement maps that provide information about the mechanical properties of the tissue under interrogation. Since the images are optical images, they also represent the optical properties of the tissue as well. In this paper, the authors present the first imaging probe that

Optical Clearing Agents for Optical Imaging Through Cartilage Tympanoplasties: A Preclinical Feasibility Study.

HYPOTHESIS: Optical clearing agents (OCAs) can render cartilage tympanoplasty grafts sufficiently transparent to permit visualization of middle ear structures in an operated ear using optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. METHODS: Pieces of human tragal cartilage were treated with glycerol, a commonly used OCA. A reference reflector was imaged with OCT through the tympanoplasty as it cleared and the optical attenuation of the graft was measured. The reversibility of clearing and the dimensional changes associated with glycerol absorption were also measured. In a separate experiment, a h

Optic nerve diffusion tensor imaging in optic neuritis.

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI) provides in vivo information about the pathology of multiple sclerosis lesions. Increases in mean diffusivity (MD) and reductions in fractional anisotropy (FA) have been found and may represent axonal disruption. The optic nerve is an ideal structure for study by DT-MRI but previous clinical studies did not obtain the full diffusion tensor necessary to calculate MD and FA. In this study, a technique that was specifically developed to achieve full diffusion tensor measurements from the optic nerve (zonal oblique multislice (ZOOM) echoplanar i

Magnetic resonance imaging of the optic nerve in optic neuritis.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the optic nerves using the STIR (short inversion time inversion recovery) sequence was performed in 37 adult patients with a recent or past attack of optic neuritis. MRI revealed high-signal regions in 84% of symptomatic and 20% of asymptomatic nerves. The mean longitudinal extent of lesions was 1 cm. Slow or poor visual recovery was associated with more extensive lesions, or lesions within the optic canal. Disk swelling was usually associated with anterior lesions but also occurred with lesions in the canal. Visual evoked potentials were even more sensitive

Imaging depth extension of optical coherence tomography in rabbit eyes using optical clearing agents.

Optical coherence tomography has become an indispensable diagnostic tool in ophthalmology for imaging the retina and the anterior segment of the eye. However, the imaging depth of optical coherence tomography is limited by light attenuation in tissues due to optical scattering and absorption. In this study of rabbit eye both ex vivo and in vivo, optical coherence tomography imaging depth of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye was extended by using optical clearing agents to reduce multiple scattering. The sclera, the iris, and the ciliary body were clearly visualized by direct appli

New Imaging Tracers for the Infected Diabetic Foot (Nuclear and Optical Imaging).

Diabetic Foot Infections (DFIs) are associated with increased morbidity, an economic burden on patients, their families and healthcare systems and increased mortality. Early diagnosis with prompt, appropriate and adequate treatment of the infected diabetic foot is crucial. The determination of DFIs, however, may be quite perplexing and invasive. Imaging is useful in the evaluation of certain cases of DFIs, especially in suspected instances with no overt clinical features, or in the diagnosis of osteomyelitis. Nuclear medicine imaging is currently used in the evaluation of DFIs; however, like a

A gentle introduction to computational optical imaging [Invited].

Computational imaging has become an important research area in the last few decades. Relaxing the traditional requirement that optical hardware directly form the final image of the object on an image sensor has allowed us to better appreciate the image formation process from an information transfer point of view. The physical properties of light that carry this information are amplitude, phase, polarization, spectrum, coherence, photon correlations, etc. Strategies for efficiently measuring one or more of these information-carrying entities, followed by reconstruction algorithms, then decide t

Holographic diffusers for endoluminal-scale optical ultrasound imaging.

SIGNIFICANCE: Freehand optical ultrasound (OpUS) is an emerging imaging modality that utilizes arrays of fiber-optic, photoacoustical ultrasound sources, and a single fiber-optic detector to perform pulse-echo ultrasound imaging in real time and at video rate. The freehand OpUS imaging probes presented to date have utilized either flat-cleaved optical fibers to generate an array of small, circular sources, or featured an additional array of eccentric optical waveguides to generate elliptical sources that improve ultrasound directivity. However, the incorporation of waveguides imposed severe re

Adaptive focusing optical coherence tomography for corneal imaging.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) plays a crucial role in diagnosing corneal diseases due to its capacity to provide high-resolution three-dimensional imaging. However, the convex shape of the cornea and the inherent trade-off between depth of field (DOF) and lateral resolution in OCT systems often result in defocusing issues, leading to reduced lateral resolution and sensitivity in single-shot high-resolution imaging. Traditional methods typically involve multiple focusing at different depths followed by image stitching to achieve full-depth high-resolution imaging of the cornea, which incre

Optical Identification of Diabetic Retinopathy Using Hyperspectral Imaging.

The severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR) is directly correlated to changes in both the oxygen utilization rate of retinal tissue as well as the blood oxygen saturation of both arteries and veins. Therefore, the current stage of DR in a patient can be identified by analyzing the oxygen content in blood vessels through fundus images. This enables medical professionals to make accurate and prompt judgments regarding the patient's condition. However, in order to use this method to implement supplementary medical treatment, blood vessels under fundus images need to be determined first, and arterie

Optical diagnostic imaging and therapy for thyroid cancer.

Thyroid cancer, as one of the most common endocrine cancers, has seen a surge in incidence in recent years. This is most likely due to the lack of specificity and accuracy of its traditional diagnostic modalities, leading to the overdiagnosis of thyroid nodules. Although there are several treatment options available, they are limited to surgery and 131I radiation therapy that come with significant side effects and hence cannot meet the treatment needs of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma with very high malignancy. Optical imaging that utilizes optical absorption, refraction and scattering propertie

Imaging Amblyopia: Insights from Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).

Amblyopia refers to visual impairment resulting from perturbations in visual experience during visual development, typically secondary to strabismus, uncorrected refractive error, and/or deprivation. Amblyopia has traditionally been considered a cortical disease, but the depth of our understanding of this complex neurodevelopmental condition is limited by our ability to appreciate structural pathophysiology in the visual pathway. Recent advances in Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) have facilitated numerous studies of the structural changes in the retina and optic nerve, thereby expanding our

Three-Dimensional Optical Imaging for Pectus Excavatum Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Corrective surgery for pectus excavatum often relies on the Haller index (HI), derived from chest roentgenograms or computed tomography; however, this exposes children to potentially unnecessary radiation. Our aim was to develop a novel three-dimensional (3D) optical imaging technique to accurately measure chest wall dimensions in a clinically relevant manner. METHODS: Patients with pectus excavatum were imaged using a 3D structured light scanner. Patient characteristics, including height, weight, body mass index, and radiographic HIs (rHI) were recorded.
