Radiation tolerance of the optic pathway in patients treated with proton and photon radiotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION) is a complication of radiation therapy (RT) that causes blindness. We aimed to define the tolerance of the anterior optic pathway to fractionated RT and identify risk factors for RION. MATERIALS/METHODS: Patients with chordoma or chondrosarcoma of the skull base treated with proton and photon therapy between 1983 and 2013, who received a minimum of 30 Gy (relative biologic effectiveness [RBE]) to the anterior optic pathway were assessed. Optic neuropathy with radiographic correlation occurring ≥6 months after completion of RT in the abse

Proton radiation therapy (PRT) for pediatric optic pathway gliomas: comparison with 3D planned conventional photons and a standard photon technique.

PURPOSE: Following adequate therapy, excellent long-term survival rates can be achieved for patients with optic pathway gliomas. Therefore, avoidance of treatment-related functional long-term sequelae is of utmost importance. Optimized sparing of normal tissue is of primary concern in the development of new treatment modalities. The present study compares proton radiation therapy (PRT) with a three-dimensional (3D)-planned multiport photon and a lateral beam photon technique for localized and extensive optic pathway tumors. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between February 1992 and November 1997, seven

Nonlinear Electro-Optic Visible Photonic Circuits for Solid-State Quantum Defects.

Integrated visible photonic engines for solid-state quantum defects provide a foundation for scalable quantum networks. While miniaturization is advancing, active manipulation remains limited by the difficulty of achieving simultaneous milliwatt-scale visible light generation and high-contrast modulation. Despite extensive efforts, the concurrent chip-scale realization of nonlinear frequency conversion and fast temporal gating for high-fidelity quantum control has remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate a monolithic thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform integrating periodically poled freque

Photon-Sphere Modes in Curved Optical Microcavities: A Black-Hole Analogue Laser.

The bell-like ringdown of the gravitational field in the final stage of massive black-hole mergers is now routinely detected on Earth by the latest generation of gravitational-wave detectors. Its spectrum is interpreted as a sum of damped sinusoidal vibrations of spacetime in the vicinity of the black hole. These so-called quasinormal modes are the subject of extensive current studies, yet their physical nature remains elusive. Here, we emulate in the laboratory genuine four-dimensional (3+1)D black-hole metrics using an effective (2+1)D optical metric defined on a two-dimensional curved surfa

Microstructural characterization of myocardial infarction with optical coherence tractography and two-photon microscopy.

Myocardial infarction leads to complex changes in the fiber architecture of the heart. Here, we present a novel optical approach to characterize these changes in intact hearts in three dimensions. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to derive a depth-resolved field of orientation on which tractography was performed. Tractography of healthy myocardium revealed a smooth linear transition in fiber inclination or helix angle from the epicardium to endocardium. Conversely, in infarcted hearts, no coherent microstructure could be identified in the infarct with OCT Additional characterization

Diffractive Optical Neural Networks: Pathways Toward Intelligent and Scalable Photonic Computing.

Optical neural networks have witnessed remarkable progress in recent years, driven by the demand for parallel, high efficiency, and ultrafast information processing. Among various optical neural network architectures, diffractive optical neural networks (DONNs) have emerged as a particularly promising approach due to their scalability in the neuron number, ultrahigh throughput, and passive low-power operation. Although free-space implementations laid the foundation for DONNs, on-chip implementations were later developed to overcome integration challenges and to enhance compatibility with photo

Integrated van der Waals waveguides for all-optical nonlinear photonic circuits.

All-optical deep neural networks offer significant improvements in processing speed and energy efficiency compared with traditional electronic systems. However, achieving broadband all-optical signal transmission with ultrafast processing speed in conventional photonic waveguides remains challenging. In this work, we present an integrated photonic circuit incorporating vertically grown molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), which is also compatible with wafer-scale manufacturing. By leveraging the saturable absorption properties of MoS2, this platform enables all-optical nonlinear activation over both t

Inverse design of 3D polymer integrated optics compatible with multi-photon lithography.

Integrated optics is primarily based on planar designs due to the availability of mature lithographic manufacturing and optical confinement constraints. These 2D designs with finite thickness in the third dimension are often referred to as 2.5D. Full 3D photonic architectures, with refractive-index variations along the three dimensions, hold the promise of higher integration density and novel, to the best of our knowledge, light control capabilities, but require advanced multi-layer stacking techniques with precise alignment and planarization. Nanoscale 3D printing techniques, such as multi-ph

Polymeric Photonic Pigments: Confined Self-Assembly, Optical Properties, and Emerging Applications.

In nature, structural color is of paramount importance because it provides a vibrant, durable, and often dynamic visual language that is essential for survival and reproduction. Unlike traditional pigment-based colors, which can fade, structural colored pigments are generated by intricate microscopic structures that manipulate light, resulting in intense iridescence and metallic sheens. The development of structural colored pigments presents a critical opportunity to replace traditional toxic colorants with safe, sustainable alternatives. Inspired from the nature, self-assembly of different po

Unveiling chiral electron-photon correlation effects in circularly polarized optical devices.

Strong coupling with circularly polarized vacuum fluctuations offers a viable route to manipulate molecular chirality. While experiments are advancing toward the realization of chiral cavities, a mean-field theoretical framework for describing electron-photon interaction in this platform has been missing. Here, we present a mean-field theory that can be systematically improved to capture the chiral correlation effects responsible for the enantioselective power of chiral light. We use strong coupling Møller-Plesset perturbation theory for accessing the excitation manifold of electrons and chira

High-fidelity preservation of photonic hyperentanglement in a free-space optical delay line.

Photonic hyperentanglement enables increased information capacity and enhanced functionality for quantum communication and networking. However, synchronization of hyperentangled photon pairs requires maintaining correlations simultaneously across multiple degrees of freedom (DOFs). The preservation of polarization and energy-time entanglement in hyperentangled photon pairs is demonstrated using a free-space optical delay line based on nested Herriott cells. After a delay of 647.0(6) ns, a two-photon interference visibility of 93.9(3)% is observed in the energy-time DOF, while a CHSH parameter

Optical properties of adult Drosophila brains in one-, two-, and three-photon microscopy.

Drosophila is widely used in connectome studies due to its small brain size, sophisticated genetic tools, and the most complete single-neuron-based anatomical brain map. Surprisingly, even the brain thickness is only 200-μm, common Ti:sapphire-based two-photon excitation cannot penetrate, possibly due to light aberration/scattering of trachea. Here we quantitatively characterized scattering and light distortion of trachea-filled tissues, and found that trachea-induced light distortion dominates at long wavelength by comparing one-photon (488-nm), two-photon (920-nm), and three-photon (1300-nm)

Hitless tunable WDM transmitter using Si photonic crystal optical modulators.

We have developed compact Si Mach-Zehnder modulators that are assisted by wideband low-dispersion slow light in lattice-shifted photonic crystal waveguides. We have also developed Si triangular-shaped coupled-microring multiplexers that allow a box-like spectrum, a wide free spectral range, and an efficient thermal tuning. In this study, we integrated three sets of these devices in a small footprint of 2.0 × 0.7 mm(2) and achieved their 25 Gbps/ch operation as a wavelength division multiplexing transmitter. Moreover, we demonstrated hitless wavelength tuning using thermo-optic switches loaded

Observation of chiral bound states in the continuum in self-biased magneto-optical photonic crystals.

Chiral bound states in the continuum (BICs) are confined photonic modes with infinite quality factors and chiral response, offering significant potential for chiral optics. Although a novel type of spin-orbital-locking chiral BIC was recently predicted in magneto-optical (MO) photonic crystals (PhCs) that break time-reversal symmetry (TRS), its experimental realization has remained elusive. Here, we report an experimental observation of such chiral BICs in self-biased MO PhCs, which operate without external magnetic fields. Moreover, we experimentally demonstrate that the chirality and the sur

Efficient microwave-to-optical single-photon conversion with a single flying circular Rydberg atom.

We propose a scheme for converting a microwave (mw) single photon in a mw cavity to a flying optical photon. The conversion is realized by using a flying circular Rydberg atom, which plays a role of the "data bus" as an excellent memory to connect the mw and optical cavities. To link the energy levels of atom in optical domain and mw domain, we use fast decircularization method and three-photon Raman transition method. Thank to these low loss processes and the super long lifetime of circular Rydberg states, this scheme can efficiently convert single mw photons into the optical domain. Based on

Mechanistic insights into silver-doped gold clusters for advanced photonic and nonlinear optical response.

Nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are crucial for the advancement of optoelectronic and photonic technologies because of their capacity to modify light-matter interactions. This paper conducts a thorough density functional theory analysis of the structural, electrical, and nonlinear optical characteristics of both pure and silver-doped gold (Au) clusters. This is the first theoretical investigation of the NLO behavior of this category of Ag-doped Au clusters. Our findings demonstrate that the addition of silver substantially reduces the HOMO-LUMO energy gap, decreasing from 5.65 eV in pure clu

Optical Vortex Harmonic Generation Enabled by Confinement-Induced Photonic Spin-Orbit Coupling.

Strong photonic spin-orbit coupling arises under tight optical confinement in a subwavelength waveguide, where propagating fields exhibit spin-orbit entanglement. To date, while the confinement-induced spin-orbit coupling has been investigated only in linear optics, its role in nonlinear optical processes remains largely unexplored. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration and theoretical analysis of unconventional nonlinear optical frequency conversion enabled by the confinement-induced spin-orbit coupling. By pumping a silica optical nanofiber with a spin-polarized Gaussian laser
