Contrasting reproductive strategies and their functional consequences in two populations of Opuntia robusta (Cactaceae).

Hermaphroditism is the predominant sexual condition in angiosperms, but populations of a single species can diverge markedly in their reproductive allocation and in the expression of their mating system. Opuntia robusta provides a suitable system to examine this divergence, as its populations differ in floral morphology, sexual expression, and reproductive performance. We compared pollen-ovule ratios, early seed performance, and floral visitors in two populations from central Mexico that occur along an altitudinal gradient and differ in their mating‑system classification. Reproductive allocati

Metabolite Profiling of Bioactive Compounds in Algerian Opuntia Fruits With Emphasis on Their Anticancer Properties.

Opuntia plants are well-known for their richness in numerous compounds with potential biological properties against human diseases, including ulcers, asthma, and hemorrhoids. This study aimed to evaluate the anticancer activity of different parts (seeds, pulp, and fruit) and extraction solvents of both cultivated and wild Opuntia fruits against various cell lines, as well as to identify the potential components responsible for this activity using a bioactivity-based molecular networking approach with LC-MS/MS data. Among the different Opuntia extracts, the aqueous wild seeds (WS) exhibited a p

A multi-omics view of wax synthesis in the wild cochineal bug, Dactylopius opuntiae.

This study establishes a comprehensive genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic foundation for the wild cochineal bug, Dactylopius opuntiae , a scale insect and agricultural pest of prickly pear cacti notable for its dense white waxy covering. Although fatty acyl reductases (FARs) are central to insect epicuticular wax biosynthesis, the genes underlying wax production in cochineal insects are largely unexplored due to a lack of genomic resources. We report a 359-Mb de novo genome assembly in which we identify 26 FAR genes. Through phylogenetic reconstruction of Coccoidea FAR enzymes we reveal li

C3 photosynthetic activity in ephemeral leaflets of the constitutive CAM species Opuntia ficus-indica.

Ephemeral leaflets are produced on emerging daughter cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica, a constitutive crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) species of major agronomic and ecological importance. Despite their ubiquity across Cactaceae, these transient organs have never been characterized as discrete photosynthetic units. Here we investigate whether leaflets operate via C3 or CAM photosynthesis and quantify their contribution to early cladode carbon (C) economy. Gas-exchange measurements, stomatal aperture analysis, titratable acidity assays, C isotope discrimination (δ13C), and 13CO2 pulse-labelli

Niche Conservatism Shapes Invasion Patterns of Opuntia Species Despite Interspecific Differences in Expansion Dynamics.

Opuntia cacti rank among the most widespread and ecologically damaging plant invaders globally, yet it remains unclear whether their invasion success is driven by niche conservatism or niche shifts. Here, we investigated niche dynamics between native and invaded ranges for four Opuntia species (O. dillenii, O. ficus-indica, O. monacantha, and O. humifusa) that differ in climatic origin and invasion history. Using biomod2 ensemble models combined with principal component analysis in environmental space (PCA-env) and multivariate environmental similarity surface (MESS) analysis, we found that al
