BACKGROUND: Asthma is considered to be the most common chronic respiratory disorder in children, and it has been suggested that asthmatic children may be at an increased risk of developing gingival disease. A study was made to evaluate the level of oral hygiene and gingival health in asthmatic children, and to explore their possible relationship with the severity of asthma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 187 children (108 with asthma and 79 healthy controls) between 6-16 years of age were studied. A questionnaire was used to collect information on habits of oral hygiene. The presence of mo

The objective of the study was to investigate the long-term effects of feeding a dental hygiene chew that has been shown to be effective in promoting periodontal health in dogs in short-term studies. Oral malodor, calculus, and plaque scores were still significantly lower after 21 months in the group that was receiving the dental hygiene chew, although gingivitis scores no longer differed significantly. There were no reports of any adverse reactions during the study. The results of the study support that feeding of the dental hygiene chew six days per week reduces accumulation of dental deposi

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The poor oral hygiene of nursing home (NH) residents is a matter of increasing concern, especially because of its relationship with pneumonia and other health events. Because details and related risk factors in this area are scant and providers need to be able to easily identify those residents at most risk, this study comprehensively examined the plaque, gingival, and denture status of NH residents, as well as readily available correlates of those indicators of oral hygiene, including items from the Minimum Data Set (MDS).
DESIGN: Oral hygiene assessment and chart abst

A study was undertaken to determine the effect of a new dental hygiene chew on periodontal health in the dog. The textural properties of this chew are different from previously tested dental hygiene products. The accumulation of dental deposits, development of oral malodor, and development of gingivitis were assessed in two groups of dogs; one fed a dry diet only, and the other fed the same dry diet supplemented by the daily addition of the new dental hygiene chew. Daily addition of the chew to the dry diet was effective in reducing plaque and calculus accumulation on the tooth surfaces, and a

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) initially enters the human body through the mouth. The correlation between oral health and H. pylori infection status remains a topic of debate in the scientific literature. To elucidate the relationships between H. pylori infection and oral hygiene status and habits, we performed a cross-sectional study among dyspeptic patients.
METHODS: Data were collected from 362 subjects with dyspepsia symptoms who underwent the 13C-urea breath test (13C-UBT) and the H. pylori antigen test (HPS) to test for gastric and oral H. pylori infections between May and

BACKGROUND: This analysis was based on an oral health survey with dental examination and interview by questionnaire.
METHOD: The data set comprised a representative random sample of the over 14-year-old residents of the German Federal State of Saxony (n=714), in which a multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted. The dependent variable was the debris index (DI) score of the oral hygiene index scoring system. The subjects were split into 2 groups by dividing DI scores into tertiles: those with acceptable oral hygiene (1st tertile, DI 0.00< or =1.20) and unacceptable oral hygiene (

National Cadet Corps (NCC) helps in nation building. There is paucity of information on their oral health status. So, a cross- sectional study was conducted on 165 NCC cadets, aged 13-18 years to assess their oral health, hygiene status and prevalence of dental conditions. Study population was divided in two groups based on age. Oral health screening was done using the Oral Hygiene Index- Simplified (OHI-S) and Decayed Missing Filled Teeth (DMFT) index. The Debris Index was found to be significantly higher. Mean DMFT among age group 13-15 was 0.3 ± 0.8 and among age group 16-18 was 0.68 ± 1.1.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have shown the urgent need for improving oral health hygiene in nursing home residents. Deficits in the knowledge of the personnel about dental and oral hygiene are often cited as one of the causes. Therefore, an oral health education programme was provided to the personnel of 20 nursing homes in Frankfurt/Main. Here the results of the assessment of the impact of the education programme on knowledge and attitudes of the personnel as well as on oral health of the residents are presented.
METHODS: In May/June 2010, 471 nurses in 20 nursing homes in the Frankfurt/Main, G

The study aimed to determine if oral hygiene influences not only oral health but also potentially metabolic disorders such as overweight or obesity. Participants were 94 patients: 40 with increased body mass and 54 with normal body mass. The methods included dental examination, a questionnaire concerning hygienic habits and an assessment of selected salivary inflammatory markers. The new parameter named "cleaning index" (describing the interaction between average time of tooth brushing in minutes and its frequency per day) significantly correlated with Body Mass Index (RSpearman = 0.300). OBJECTIVES: The gingival and periodontal changes during pregnancy are well known. Gingivitis is the most prevalent oral manifestations associated with pregnancy. The hormonal and vascular changes that accompany pregnancy are known to exaggerate the inflammatory response to the local irritants. Hence, a study was designed to assess oral hygiene status, gingival status, periodontal status, and treatment needs (TNs) among pregnant and nonpregnant women.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 120 pregnant and 120 nonpregnant women of 18-44 years age attending the Outpa

BACKGROUND: Children hospitalised for acute or chronic illnesses often experience a decline in oral health, an aspect frequently neglected in inpatient care. Factors such as medication use, dietary alterations, and interruption of regular hygiene routines can adversely affect oral conditions, emphasising the need for structured preventive measures. This study aimed to investigate the impact of hospitalisation on paediatric oral health by comparing oral hygiene behaviours and clinical parameters at admission and discharge, and by assessing the degree of attention given to oral care during the h
