INTRODUCTION: Behçet's disease is a chronic vasulitis. The aphtous stomatitis is present in nearly the totality of patients having this disease.
AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the oral health of Behcet's disease (BD) patients and then compare it with healthy controls.
METHODS: Twenty patients with BD and 20 healthy subjects were included in this cross-sectional study conducted at the military hospital of Bizerta from 01/10/2017 to 31/05/2019. The level of plaque were recorded using the plaque index (PI). The gingival index (GI) was used to evaluate the gingival inflammation.

Gastrointestinal symptoms are predominant in Crohn's disease. Oral manifestations may also occur. The prevalence of oral manifestations varies between 0.5% and 37%. The manifestations may coincide with or precede gastrointestinal symptoms, and can be subdivided into specific and non-specific lesions. In most patients, lesions are asymptomatic but some patients experience serious discomfort. Oral manifestations can be classified as specific lesions, such as diffuse lip and buccal swelling and cobblestones, and non-specific lesions, such as aphthous ulcers, pyostomatitis vegetans, caries, gingiv

Nutritional deficiencies occur when body metabolic requirements are not matched by intake and absorption. Reasons for this discrepancy are numerous, but often social, economic, medical, and even psychiatric factors may play a role. Vitamins and minerals are required for appropriate rapid cell turnover of the oral mucosa. The oral cavity is a unique anatomic environment that may manifest early signs of nutritional disorders as well as other indicators of systemic disease. Knowledge of these oral manifestations and associated findings will allow a practitioner to consider a nutritional disorder

On examination, the oral cavity may exhibit manifestations of underlying systemic disease and serve as an indicator of overall health. Systemic diseases with oral findings include autoimmune, hematologic, endocrine, and neoplastic processes. Autoimmune disease may manifest as oral ulcerations, changes in the salivary and parotid glands, and changes in the tongue. Patients with hematologic illnesses may present with gingival bleeding or tongue changes such as glossitis, depending on the etiology. Oral changes associated with endocrine illness are variable and depend on the underlying condition.

Careful examination of the oral cavity may reveal findings indicative of an underlying systemic condition, and allow for early diagnosis and treatment. Examination should include evaluation for mucosal changes, periodontal inflammation and bleeding, and general condition of the teeth. Oral findings of anemia may include mucosal pallor, atrophic glossitis, and candidiasis. Oral ulceration may be found in patients with lupus erythematosus, pemphigus vulgaris, or Crohn disease. Additional oral manifestations of lupus erythematosus may include honeycomb plaques (silvery white, scarred plaques); ra

Pachyonychia congenita is a rare genetic disorder characterized mainly by hypertrophy of the nails and hyperkeratosis of the skin and mucosae. Fifty percent of all patients have oral leukokeratosis, which is often painful. The case reported here is of a 41-year-old patient who had white lesions in the form of irregular plaques; these affected multiple regions of the oral mucosa and were sensitive to touch. Histological examination revealed acanthosis, parakeratosis and ballooning of the epithelial cells, consistent with oral leukokeratosis. After therapy including topical steroids and prosthet

INTRODUCTION: Contrary to early beliefs, celiac disease (CD) is relatively common; however, it still remains underdiagnosed since most cases are atypical, with few or no gastrointestinal symptoms and predominance of extraintestinal manifestations. As a consequence, the diagnosis of the disorder often requires a multidisciplinary approach. Also some oral ailments have been described in celiac patients. In this study, we review the papers that have reported oral manifestations in subjects with CD.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in Medline and Embase databases using app

Sjögren's syndrome is a common autoimmune rheumatic disease. The most common symptoms of Sjögren's syndrome are extreme tiredness, along with dry eyes (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and dry mouth (xerostomia). Saliva plays an essential role in numerous functions of the mouth. Xerostomia can be caused by medications, chronic diseases like Sjögren's syndrome, and medical treatments, such as radiation therapy and bone marrow transplant. Xerostomia can eventually lead to difficulty in swallowing, severe and progressive tooth decay, or oral infections. Despite having excellent oral hygiene, individua

In this review article, oral lesions in relation to HIV infection are presented and discussed. Lesions such as oral candidiasis, hairy leukoplakia and necrotising gingivitis or periodontitis may be the first sign of an HIV infection or of its progression. Almost all HIV-infected patients will contract oral diseases. Dentists and physicians play an essential role in early recognition of signs and symptoms of HIV disease or of its progression. Only through such recognition can appropriate definitive diagnostic testing be conducted and appropriate therapeutic intervention for the condition be con

Oral manifestations of endocrine dysfunction often may be observed initially by the dentist. Objective manifestations, such as ophtalmos in hyperthyroidism, signs of hypersecretion of GH in acromegaly, are easily recognized. Dentists should have some knowledge of many other diseases in this category that occasionally come in our attention. The present article will discuss the effects of over and under-secretion of each endocrine gland separately, showing its influence on the development and maintenance of the health of the teeth and supporting structures. Diabetes mellitus is the most common e

Erythema multiforme is a reactive mucocutaneous disorder in a disease spectrum that comprises a self-limited, mild, exanthematic, cutaneous variant with minimal oral involvement (EM minor) to a progressive, fulminating, severe variant with extensive mucocutaneous epithelial necrosis (SJS and TEN). Significant differences exist among EM minor, EM major, SJS, and TEN with regards to severity and clinical expression; however, all variants share two common features: typical or less typical cutaneous target lesions and satellite-cell or more widespread necrosis of the epithelium. These features are

Many systemic diseases have oral manifestations. The oral cavity might well be thought of as the window to the body because oral manifestations accompany many systemic diseases. These oral manifestations must be properly recognized if the patient is to receive appropriate diagnosis and referral for treatment. We have reviewed a series of recent articles and summarized known and newly described oral manifestations of several systemic diseases. The lesions of the oral mucosa, tongue, gingiva, dentition, periodontium, salivary glands, facial skeleton, extraoral skin and other related structures c

Oral disease is frequently associated with HIV. While nearly all oral disorders associated with HIV infection also occur in other conditions characterized by immunosuppression, no other condition is associated with as wide and significant a spectrum of oral disease as is HIV infection. Many HIV-associated oral disorders occur early in HIV infection, not infrequently as the presenting sign or symptom. Thus, early detection of associated oral disease should, in many cases, result in earlier diagnosis of HIV infection. Likewise, awareness of the variety of oral disorders which can develop through

Oral lesions are frequently seen in association with all stages of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Many of these lesions occur as the first clinical sign of HIV infection. These lesions include candidiasis, hairy leukoplakia, warts, ulcers, and an aggressive form of periodontal disease. Careful oral examination may reveal lesions that alter Centers for Disease Control staging.

Metoclopramide is a widely used product, which can accidentally cause acute dyskinesia, of which several forms may be observed, including dysarthria, tetany, spasmophilia, false cerebral vascular insult, trismus, hysteriform spell.... In all those cases, one should think of giving an antiemetic and of properly orienting history-taking, thus avoiding a longer stay in hospital that would not be justified. This is demonstrated by two patients recently admitted into the department of maxillofacial surgery and stomatology with maxillofacial signs related with the adverse effects of this kind of dru
