Controlling the direction of light emission on the subwavelength scale is a key to manipulating light and improving efficiency in optical sensing and quantum information processing. In functional metasurfaces, photonic spin angular momentum is widely used to control the propagation of light emission by geometric phase, but it is challenging to accomplish using monolayer materials because of lacking optical resonance in atomic thickness. Furthermore, the manipulation of the optical geometric phase based on spin angular momentum beams typically offers only two tunable states. Here, we report opt

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in tightly focused optical fields offers a powerful mechanism for manipulating the complex motion of particles. However, to date, such a mechanism has only been applied to the single-orbit motion for particles, while multi-orbital dynamics have not yet been experimentally demonstrated. Here, the theoretical and experimental realization of dual-orbit rotational dynamics of nanoparticles in a tightly focused circularly polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beam is reported. Analyses reveal that the dual-orbit rotation of nanoparticles originates from SOC in a tightly focused vort

INTRODUCTION: Gallstone ileus is rare but with high mortality. Although gallstone ileus usually requires urgent enterolithotomy, cholecystectomy, and fistula closure, we present a case of recurrent gallstone ileus treated with enterolithotomy alone.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old female presented to the emergency department with nausea, emesis, and abdominal pain. After computed tomography revealed the diagnosis of gallstone ileus, enterolithotomy was performed without postoperative complications. Cholecystectomy and fistula closure were not performed due to inaccessibility to the gallbladd

Brain tumors affecting the orbit and orbital tumors affecting the brain are a heterogeneous group of lesions, with histological features, behaviors, diagnostic criteria, and treatments varying from each other. Dermoid cyst and cavernous hemangiomas are considered the most frequent benign lesions, while non-Hodgkin lymphoma is the most common malignant tumor in this region. Sharing the same anatomical region, clinical manifestations of orbital lesions may be often common to different types of lesions. Imaging studies are useful in the differential diagnosis of orbital lesions and the planning o

Each orbit is a complex structure housing the globe, multiple cranial nerves, muscles, vascular structures, which support the visual sense. Many of these structures have been delineated in careful detail by anatomists but remain beyond the resolution of conventional imaging techniques. With the advances of higher resolution MR, surface coil usage, and thinner section computed tomographic images, the ability to resolve these small structures continues to improve, allowing radiologists to provide more detailed anatomic descriptions for preoperative and pretreatment planning.

Angiolipoma is characteristically described as an encapsulated mass of mature adipose tissue containing clusters of small blood vessels. The authors have described an extremely rare case of angiolipoma of the orbit. This rare case is only the third reported in the orbit and should be readily recognized from other differential diagnoses. The patient had an excellent prognosis after full surgical excision.

Herein we present a retrospective case report of a very rare fibrolipoma originating in the orbit. Lipomas and related variants presenting in the orbit are very rare. Only 2 documented orbital fibrolipomas were noted in our review of literature. A 26-year-old woman presented with a growing mass below the left eyebrow 4 years after suffering facial trauma after being kicked in the face by a horse. CT demonstrated a hypodense nodule adherent to the orbital portion of the left frontal bone that was not encapsulated. An elective left anterior orbitotomy with excisional biopsy was performed, and fi

A 47-year-old woman presented with a growing mass on the lateral rim of orbit. Orbital CT revealed a well-circumscribed soft tissue mass in the right lateral orbit, with focal hyperostosis of the adjacent zygomatic bone. MRI showed a lesion of mixed T1-signal intensity, which became hypointense after fat suppression. The lesion was excised, and the diagnosis of orbital fibrolipoma was made by histopathologic examination. There was no evidence of tumor after 12 months of follow-up. Orbital fibrolipoma is a rare variant of lipoma, with only 1 case described previously. It should be considered in

Penetrating head and face injuries can cause hemorrhages, neurological lesions, visual acuity loss, fractures and facial deformities. This report discusses an injury caused by a knife that penetrated the left orbit and reached the skull base without damaging any important structures. The knife was removed through the entrance wound and no complications were observed either during or after surgery.

PURPOSE: To describe an uncommon sinus condition that can cause proptosis.
METHODS: Intermittent unilateral proptosis and diplopia developed in a 29-year-old man. Computed tomography showed an enlarged frontal sinus with erosion of the floor of the sinus and air in the orbit.
RESULTS: Endoscopic ethmoidectomy and frontal sinusotomy corrected an outlet check valve of the nasal frontal duct and eliminated the proptosis.
CONCLUSION: Pneumatocele of the orbit is an uncommon cause of proptosis and diplopia and can be corrected with endoscopic sinus surgery.

Although rare, orbital osteomyelitis secondary to sinusitis can be devastating. Early, aggressive ophthalmologic surgical intervention, as well as otorhinolaryngologic co-management, is necessary to obtain the best outcomes. We present two cases of orbital osteomyelitis. One patient remained infected with Pseudomonas meningitis even after extensive sinus and orbital surgery, rapidly declined, and is now deceased. The other patient, after multiple sinus procedures and a medial orbitotomy, was placed on hyperbaric oxygen and is still undergoing treatment.

The optic nerve is a fiber tract of the brain, and is not a true cranial nerve. Primary pathologic processes seen in the central nervous system and its linings can therefore affect the optic nerve. Along their course the fibers of the visual pathways are also susceptible to secondary extrinsic processes. The MR appearance of many of the primary and secondary processes that affect the optic nerve are characteristic. Where the imaging features of a process are not characteristic, a fairly narrow differential diagnosis can be suggested depending on the imaging appearance and anatomic location of

Actinomycosis is a very rare cause of orbital abscess usually attributable to direct spread from adjacent structures. A case of actinomycosis of the orbit is presented, which was treated as orbital pseudotumour for 3 months before progression of signs and symptoms, despite high dose steroids, led to the diagnosis being reconsidered.

Three cases of orbito-palpebral lymphangioma are reported. The three cases all have the common features: onset in early childhood, slow progression and extension of the tumor to other structures (palate and temporal fossa). The usual complications (hemorrhage and cellulitis) were documented in our cases. Biopsy of the lesions showed variably sized endothelial lined spaces without a capsule. Theses spaces contain eosinophilic material without blood elements. In two cases, chirurgical excision gave orbital edema. The authors think that orbital lymphangioma is a clinical entity. The treatment is

A 56-year-old Japanese woman was treated surgically for orbital paraganglioma. She had had proptosis of the left eye and lowered visual acuity. Papilledema and many retinochoroidal folds were seen. CT-scan demonstrated a tumor shadow on the optic nerve in the muscle cone. Tumor extirpation by Krönlein-Berke's procedure resulted in complete loss of vision due to surgical damage to the optic nerve. The previously reported 24 cases of orbital paraganglioma are reviewed. According to these clinical descriptions, orbital paragangliomas occur unilaterally in males and females, at any age, especially

3 patients with orbital mucocele are presented. In 2 cases antecedent factors were fractures through the frontal paranasal sinuses and in 1 case a carcinoma of the posterior ethmoid cells. Roentgenographic examination consisted in plain radiography and radiotomography of the skull as well as isotope scanning of the brain and skull. In one case computed axial tomography was used. In the detection of perforating lesions of the posterior wall of the frontal sinus, computed axial tomography gave better results than radiotomography. Marginal sclerosis, described as typical radiographic sign of a fr
